Abstract

During excavations undertaken by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit at the Jewson’s site on Broad Street in Ely in 2000 a heavily corroded iron sword cross (the part of the hilt that guards the hand holding the grip) was recovered. Subsequently, the sword cross has been conserved by the Collections Care Team of Lincolnshire Archives and further details have been revealed. The conservation uncovered a compact grey/black corrosion layer indicative of the approximate position of the original surface of the iron, along with evidence of decorative copper alloy inlay.  相似文献

Abstract

In an earlier issue, Dr. Timothy Dawson suggested that the fighting techniques found in Royal Armouries MS I.33 may have been influenced by earlier Byzantine sword and shield combat. For evidence, he cites a series of 9th-century ivory carvings depicting similar positions found in I.33. This article is a response to Dr. Dawson’s, in which it is argued that there is ample evidence for similar combat positions being found in Western Europe that both pre-date and are contemporary with I.33.  相似文献

Abstract

The main throwing machines invented and used by the Greeks and adopted, more widely, by Roman armies are examined. The kinematics and dynamics of both light and heavy Greek–Roman artillery are used in order to accurately assess its performance. Thus, a better understanding is obtained of the tactics and strategies of the legions of the Roman Empire as well as the reasons for some brilliant campaigns. Reconstructions of a repeating catapult, considered to be the ancestor of the modern machine gun, are also presented. The development of the mechanical design of such machines is discussed and pictorial reconstructions proposed.  相似文献

Abstract

In August 1859, at the Birnam Hotel in Perthshire, Lord Panmure, sometime Principal Secretary of State for War in Palmerston’s Government, presented this fine silver-gilt mounted basket-hilted sword on behalf of the tenantry of the Drummond Stewart estates at Grandtully, Perthshire, to Major William George Drummond Stewart, VC, the only son of the laird, Sir William Drummond Stewart, 7th Baronet. The token was given not only to mark the officer’s safe return from the Crimean War (1854–56) and the Indian Mutiny Campaign (1857–58), in which he and his regiment, the 93rd Highlanders, had greatly distinguished themselves, but also in recognition of the pride and interest taken in Stewart’s personal ‘gallant discharge of duty’, which had earned him, at Lucknow, on 16 November 1857, the newly constituted Victoria Cross.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The period 1833 to 1840 witnessed a brutal civil war in Spain waged between insurgent Carlists and the government Cristinos. The Carlists managed to secure reliable territorial control only over one part of Spain (upland Navarra and rural parts of the neighbouring Basque provinces). Although pockets of armed Carlism flourished elsewhere in Spain, especially in Catalonia, Aragón and Galicia, these insurgents were ineffective at coordinating actions. The Carlist court in the Basque country tried to break its strategic blockade by launching a series of expeditions into Cristino-held territory in the hope of destabilising the Madrid regime and consolidating distant insurrections. This article explains how and why these expeditions scored tactical victories but strategic failures. In particular it argues that Carlist raiding strategy was a failure, for its use of violence against real and imagined enemies in marginal and Cristino areas of control alienated civilian support.  相似文献

The sword which is the subject of this article and which will be referred to as the Capel sword, is a fine example of what has become known as an Irish basket-hilt. Whilst there are other examples in existence, what makes this sword unique and particularly important is the fact that it is known to have been owned by two important Royalist military leaders, Lord Arthur Capel and Sir John Owen. These two extraordinary men came from different backgrounds but their fate was linked through circumstances beyond their control. The story this sword tells is one of comradeship, loyalty, total belief in a cause, betrayal and ultimate sacrifice.  相似文献

Current problem: Border Emergency

Solutions in response

US Congress's response: Set immigration policies, a series of immigration reform bills and proposals.

Government's response: Make an appropriation/budget for border issues: increase law enforcement personnel and needed resources, pay officers overtime, and build fences along the border.

Scientists' response: Describe this complex problem mathematically and provide scientific solutions.  相似文献
