Scheduling a set of n jobs on a single machine so as to minimize the completion time variance is a well‐known NP‐hard problem. In this paper, we propose a sequence, which can be constructed in O(n log n) time, as a solution for the problem. Our primary concern is to establish the asymptotical optimality of the sequence within the framework of probabilistic analysis. Our main result is that, when the processing times are randomly and independently drawn from the same uniform distribution, the sequence is asymptotically optimal in the sense that its relative error converges to zero in probability as n increases. Other theoretical results are also derived, including: (i) When the processing times follow a symmetric structure, the problem has 2⌊(n−1)/2⌋ optimal sequences, which include our proposed sequence and other heuristic sequences suggested in the literature; and (ii) when these 2⌊(n−1)/2⌋ sequences are used as approximate solutions for a general problem, our proposed sequence yields the best approximation (in an average sense) while another sequence, which is commonly believed to be a good approximation in the literature, is interestingly the worst. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We consider the problem of scheduling orders on identical machines in parallel. Each order consists of one or more individual jobs. A job that belongs to an order can be processed by any one of the machines. Multiple machines can process the jobs of an order concurrently. No setup is required if a machine switches over from one job to another. Each order is released at time zero and has a positive weight. Preemptions are not allowed. The completion time of an order is the time at which all jobs of that order have been completed. The objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time of the orders. The problem is NP‐hard for any fixed number (≥2) of machines. Because of this, we focus our attention on two classes of heuristics, which we refer to as sequential two‐phase heuristics and dynamic two‐phase heuristics. We perform a worst case analysis as well as an empirical analysis of nine heuristics. Our analyses enable us to rank these heuristics according to their effectiveness, taking solution quality as well as running time into account. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider the bicriteria problem of minimizing total flow time and maximum tardiness penalties for a given set of jobs on a single machine. We develop an algorithm that finds the optimal schedule for any given monotonic function of the two criteria by generating only a small subset of the efficient schedules.  相似文献

This article deals with the problem of scheduling jobs with random processing times on single machine in order to minimize the expected variance of job completion times. Sufficient conditions for the existence of V-shaped optimal sequences are derived separately for general and ordered job processing times. It is shown that when coefficient of variation of random processing times are bounded by a certain value, an optimal sequence is V-shaped. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider the transportation problem of determining nonnegative shipments from a set of m warehouses with given availabilities to a set of n markets with given requirements. Three objectives are defined for each solution: (i) total cost, TC, (ii) bottleneck time, BT (i.e., maximum transportation time for a positive shipment), and (iii) bottleneck shipment, SB (i.e., total shipment over routes with bottleneck time). An algorithm is given for determining all efficient (pareto-optimal or nondominated) (TC, BT) solution pairs. The special case of this algorithm when all the unit cost coefficients are zero is shown to be the same as the algorithms for minimizing BT. provided by Szwarc and Hammer. This algorithm for minimizing BT is shown to be computationally superior. Transportation or assignment problems with m=n=100 average about a second on the UNIVAC 1108 computer (FORTRAN V)) to the threshold algorithm for minimizing BT. The algorithm is then extended to provide not only all the efficient (TC, BT) solution pairs but also, for each such BT, all the efficient (TC, SB) solution pairs. The algorithms are based on the cost operator theory of parametric programming for the transportation problem developed by the authors.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling multiprocessor tasks with prespecified processor allocations to minimize the total completion time. The complexity of both preemptive and nonpreemptive cases of the two-processor problem are studied. We show that the preemptive case is solvable in O(n log n) time. In the nonpreemptive case, we prove that the problem is NP-hard in the strong sense, which answers an open question mentioned in Hoogeveen, van de Velde, and Veltman (1994). An efficient heuristic is also developed for this case. The relative error of this heuristic is at most 100%. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 45: 231–242, 1998  相似文献

In statistical analysis of stationary time series or in steady-state simulation output analysis, it is desired to find consistent estimates of the process variance parameter. Here, we consider variants of the area estimator of standardized time series, namely, the weighted area and the Cramér-von Mises area estimators, and provide their consistency, in the strong sense and mean-square sense. A sharp bound for the (asymptotic) variance of these estimators is obtained. We also present a central limit theorem for the weighted area estimator: this gives a rate of convergence of this estimator, as well as a confidence interval for the variance parameter. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the concurrent open shop scheduling problem to minimize the total weighted completion time. When the number of machines is arbitrary, the problem has been shown to be inapproximable within a factor of 4/3 ‐ ε for any ε > 0 if the unique games conjecture is true in the literature. We propose a polynomial time approximation scheme for the problem under the restriction that the number of machines is fixed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2011  相似文献

This paper analyzes the Smith-heuristic for the single-machine scheduling problem where the objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time subject to the constraint that the tradiness for any job does not exceed a prespecified maximum allowable tardiness. We identify several cases of this problem for which the Smith-heuristic is guaranteed to lead to optimal solutions. We also provide a worst-case analysis of the Smith-heuristic; the analysis shows that the fractional increase in the objective function value for the Smith-heuristic from the optimal solution is unbounded in the worst case.  相似文献

The concept of parallel operations has been widely used in manufacturing and data processing. However, not many efficient methods have been proposed to reduce job tardiness. This article proposes an efficient heuristic to minimize the mean tardiness of a set of tasks with known processing times and due dates for single and m parallel machines. For the single-machine case, the proposed heuristic is compared with the well-known Wilkerson and Irwin algorithm; for the m parallel machine case, it is compared with an extension of the Wilkerson-Irwin algorithm. We also introduce a simple dispatching rule, and it is compared with some existing dispatching rules. The comprehensive simulation results show that the proposed heuristic performs better than the Wilkerson-Irwin algorithm at a significantly reduced computational time.  相似文献

The problem of sequencing jobs on parallel processors when jobs have different available times, due dates, penalty costs and waiting costs is considered. The processors are identical and are available when the earliest job becomes available and continuously thereafter. There is a processor cost during the period when the processor is available for processing jobs. The proposed algorithm finds the sequence (or sequences) with minimum total cost (sum of waiting, penalty and processor costs.). A proof of the algorithm and numerical results are given.  相似文献

The machine scheduling literature does not consider the issue of tool change. The parallel literature on tool management addresses this issue but assumes that the change is due only to part mix. In practice, however, a tool change is caused most frequently by tool wear. That is why we consider here the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a single CNC machine where the cutting tool is subject to wear; our objective is to minimize the total completion time. We first describe the problem and discuss its peculiarities. After briefly reviewing available theoretical results, we then go on to provide a mixed 0–1 linear programming model for the exact solution of the problem; this is useful in solving problem instances with up to 20 jobs and has been used in our computational study. As our main contribution, we next propose a number of heuristic algorithms based on simple dispatch rules and generic search. We then discuss the results of a computational study where the performance of the various heuristics is tested; we note that the well‐known SPT rule remains good when the tool change time is small but deteriorates as this time increases and further that the proposed algorithms promise significant improvement over the SPT rule. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We propose three related estimators for the variance parameter arising from a steady‐state simulation process. All are based on combinations of standardized‐time‐series area and Cramér–von Mises (CvM) estimators. The first is a straightforward linear combination of the area and CvM estimators; the second resembles a Durbin–Watson statistic; and the third is related to a jackknifed version of the first. The main derivations yield analytical expressions for the bias and variance of the new estimators. These results show that the new estimators often perform better than the pure area, pure CvM, and benchmark nonoverlapping and overlapping batch means estimators, especially in terms of variance and mean squared error. We also give exact and Monte Carlo examples illustrating our findings.© 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2007  相似文献

In this paper the n/1/rj Σj wj Cj problem under the assumptions of nonpreemptive sequencing and sequence independent processing times is investigated. After pointing out the fundamental properties, some dominance sufficient conditions among sequences are obtained and a branch and bound algorithm is proposed. Computational results are reported and discussed.  相似文献

In the last decade, there has been much progress in understanding scheduling problems in which selfish jobs aim to minimize their individual completion time. Most of this work has focused on makespan minimization as social objective. In contrast, we consider as social cost the total weighted completion time, that is, the sum of the agent costs, a standard definition of welfare in economics. In our setting, jobs are processed on restricted uniform parallel machines, where each machine has a speed and is only capable of processing a subset of jobs; a job's cost is its weighted completion time; and each machine sequences its jobs in weighted shortest processing time (WSPT) order. Whereas for the makespan social cost the price of anarchy is not bounded by a constant in most environments, we show that for our minsum social objective the price of anarchy is bounded above by a small constant, independent of the instance. Specifically, we show that the price of anarchy is exactly 2 for the class of unit jobs, unit speed instances where the finite processing time values define the edge set of a forest with the machines as nodes. For the general case of mixed job strategies and restricted uniform machines, we prove that the price of anarchy equals 4. From a classical machine scheduling perspective, our results establish the same constant performance guarantees for WSPT list scheduling. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider a general linear filtering operation on an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) time series. The variance of the filter output, which is an important quantity in many applications, is not known with certainty because it depends on the true ARMA parameters. We derive an expression for the sensitivity (i.e., the partial derivative) of the output variance with respect to deviations in the model parameters. The results provide insight into the robustness of many common statistical methods that are based on linear filtering and also yield approximate confidence intervals for the output variance. We discuss applications to time series forecasting, statistical process control, and automatic feedback control of industrial processes. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We formulate exact expressions for the expected values of selected estimators of the variance parameter (that is, the sum of covariances at all lags) of a steady‐state simulation output process. Given in terms of the autocovariance function of the process, these expressions are derived for variance estimators based on the simulation analysis methods of nonoverlapping batch means, overlapping batch means, and standardized time series. Comparing estimator performance in a first‐order autoregressive process and the M/M/1 queue‐waiting‐time process, we find that certain standardized time series estimators outperform their competitors as the sample size becomes large. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider problem of scheduling jobs on‐line on batch processing machines with dynamic job arrivals to minimize makespan. A batch machine can handle up to B jobs simultaneously. The jobs that are processed together from a batch, and all jobs in a batch start and complete at the same time. The processing time of a batch is given by the longest processing time of any job in the batch. Each job becomes available at its arrival time, which is unknown in advance, and its processing time becomes known upon its arrival. In the first part of this paper, we address the single batch processing machine scheduling problem. First we deal with two variants: the unbounded model where B is sufficiently large and the bounded model where jobs have two distinct arrival times. For both variants, we provide on‐line algorithms with worst‐case ratio (the inverse of the Golden ratio) and prove that these results are the best possible. Furthermore, we generalize our algorithms to the general case and show a worst‐case ratio of 2. We then consider the unbounded case for parallel batch processing machine scheduling. Lower bound are given, and two on‐line algorithms are presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 48: 241–258, 2001  相似文献
