Key to the locks: Dating guns of the flintlock era

Abstract

This paper forms a study of side locks and in turn the accurate dating of the internal mechanisms of 18th-century flintlocks. The following study will also provide a clearer picture of the progress achieved by the generations of gunsmiths working in No. 10 (New) Bond Street, London, commencing with Samuel Harrison in 1718 through the famous name of Griffin to John Grierson in the 1840s.
