This paper studies a periodic‐review pricing and inventory control problem for a retailer, which faces stochastic price‐sensitive demand, under quite general modeling assumptions. Any unsatisfied demand is lost, and any leftover inventory at the end of the finite selling horizon has a salvage value. The cost component for the retailer includes holding, shortage, and both variable and fixed ordering costs. The retailer's objective is to maximize its discounted expected profit over the selling horizon by dynamically deciding on the optimal pricing and replenishment policy for each period. We show that, under a mild assumption on the additive demand function, at the beginning of each period an (s,S) policy is optimal for replenishment, and the value of the optimal price depends on the inventory level after the replenishment decision has been done. Our numerical study also suggests that for a sufficiently long selling horizon, the optimal policy is almost stationary. Furthermore, the fixed ordering cost (K) plays a significant role in our modeling framework. Specifically, any increase in K results in lower s and higher S. On the other hand, the profit impact of dynamically changing the retail price, contrasted with a single fixed price throughout the selling horizon, also increases with K. We demonstrate that using the optimal policy values from a model with backordering of unmet demands as approximations in our model might result in significant profit penalty. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Extending Sastry's result on the uncapacitated two‐commodity network design problem, we completely characterize the optimal solution of the uncapacitated K‐commodity network design problem with zero flow costs for the case when K = 3. By solving a set of shortest‐path problems on related graphs, we show that the optimal solutions can be found in O(n3) time when K = 3, where n is the number of nodes in the network. The algorithm depends on identifying a list of “basic patterns”; the number of basic patterns grows exponentially with K. We also show that the uncapacitated K‐commodity network design problem can be solved in O(n3) time for general K if K is fixed; otherwise, the time for solving the problem is exponential. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We develop a simple O(n log n) solution method for the standard lot-sizing model with backlogging and a study horizon of n periods. Production costs are fixed plus linear and holding and backlogging costs are linear with general time-dependent parameters. The algorithm has linear [O(n)] time complexity for several important subclasses of the general model. We show how a slight adaptation of the algorithm can be used for the detection of a minimal forecast horizon and associated planning horizon. The adapted algorithm continues to have complexity O(n log n) or O(n) for the above-mentioned subclasses of the general model. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider a multi‐stage inventory system composed of a single warehouse that receives a single product from a single supplier and replenishes the inventory of n retailers through direct shipments. Fixed costs are incurred for each truck dispatched and all trucks have the same capacity limit. Costs are stationary, or more generally monotone as in Lippman (Management Sci 16, 1969, 118–138). Demands for the n retailers over a planning horizon of T periods are given. The objective is to find the shipment quantities over the planning horizon to satisfy all demands at minimum system‐wide inventory and transportation costs without backlogging. Using the structural properties of optimal solutions, we develop (1) an O(T2) algorithm for the single‐stage dynamic lot sizing problem; (2) an O(T3) algorithm for the case of a single‐warehouse single‐retailer system; and (3) a nested shortest‐path algorithm for the single‐warehouse multi‐retailer problem that runs in polynomial time for a given number of retailers. To overcome the computational burden when the number of retailers is large, we propose aggregated and disaggregated Lagrangian decomposition methods that make use of the structural properties and the efficient single‐stage algorithm. Computational experiments show the effectiveness of these algorithms and the gains associated with coordinated versus decentralized systems. Finally, we show that the decentralized solution is asymptotically optimal. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 2009  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of computing optimal ordering policies for a product that has a life of exactly two periods when demand is random. Initially costs are charged against runouts (stockouts) and outdating (perishing). By charging outdating costs according to the expected amount of outdating one period into the future, a feasible one period model is constructed. The central theorem deals with the n-stage dynamic problem and demonstrates the appropriate cost functions are convex in the decision variable and also provides bounds on certain derivatives. The model is then generalized to include ordering and holding costs. The paper is concluded with a discussion of the infinite horizon problem.  相似文献

We develop a competitive pricing model which combines the complexity of time‐varying demand and cost functions and that of scale economies arising from dynamic lot sizing costs. Each firm can replenish inventory in each of the T periods into which the planning horizon is partitioned. Fixed as well as variable procurement costs are incurred for each procurement order, along with inventory carrying costs. Each firm adopts, at the beginning of the planning horizon, a (single) price to be employed throughout the horizon. On the basis of each period's system of demand equations, these prices determine a time series of demands for each firm, which needs to service them with an optimal corresponding dynamic lot sizing plan. We establish the existence of a price equilibrium and associated optimal dynamic lotsizing plans, under mild conditions. We also design efficient procedures to compute the equilibrium prices and dynamic lotsizing plans.© 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 2009  相似文献

The majority of scheduling literature assumes that the machines are available at all times. In this paper, we study single machine scheduling problems where the machine maintenance must be performed within certain intervals and hence the machine is not available during the maintenance periods. We also assume that if a job is not processed to completion before the machine is stopped for maintenance, an additional setup is necessary when the processing is resumed. Our purpose is to schedule the maintenance and jobs to minimize some performance measures. The objective functions that we consider are minimizing the total weighted job completion times and minimizing the maximum lateness. In both cases, maintenance must be performed within a fixed period T, and the time for the maintenance is a decision variable. In this paper, we study two scenarios concerning the planning horizon. First, we show that, when the planning horizon is long in relation to T, the problem with either objective function is NP-complete, and we present pseudopolynomial time dynamic programming algorithms for both objective functions. In the second scenario, the planning horizon is short in relation to T. However, part of the period T may have elapsed before we schedule any jobs in this planning horizon, and the remaining time before the maintenance is shorter than the current planning horizon. Hence we must schedule one maintenance in this planning horizon. We show that the problem of minimizing the total weighted completion times in this scenario is NP-complete, while the shortest processing time (SPT) rule and the earliest due date (EDD) rule are optimal for the total completion time problem and the maximum lateness problem respectively. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Consider a single‐item, periodic review, infinite‐horizon, undiscounted, inventory model with stochastic demands, proportional holding and shortage costs, and full backlogging. Orders can arrive in every period, and the cost of receiving them is negligible (as in a JIT setting). Every T periods, one audits the current stock level and decides on deliveries for the next T periods, thus incurring a fixed audit cost and—when one schedules deliveries—a fixed order cost. The problem is to find a review period T and an ordering policy that satisfy the average cost criterion. The current article extends an earlier treatment of this problem, which assumed that the fixed order cost is automatically incurred once every T periods. We characterize an optimal ordering policy when T is fixed, prove that an optimal review period T** exists, and develop a global search algorithm for its computation. We also study the behavior of four approximations to T** based on the assumption that the fixed order cost is incurred during every cycle. Analytic results from a companion article (where μ/σ is large) and extensive computational experiments with normal and gamma demand test problems suggest these approximations and associated heuristic policies perform well when μ/σ ≥ 2. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper develops a forward algorithm and planning horizon procedures for an important machine replacement model where it is assumed that the technological environment is improving over time and that the machine-in-use can be replaced by any of the several different kinds of machines available at that time. The set of replacement alternatives may include (i) new machines with different types of technologies such as labor- and capital- intensive, (ii) used machines, (iii) repairs and/or improvements which affect the performance characteristics of the existing machine, and so forth. The forward dynamic programming algorithm in the paper can be used to solve a finite horizon problem. The planning horizon results give a procedure to identify the forecast horizon T such that the optimal replacement decision for the first machine based on the forecast of machine technology until period T remains optimal for any problem with horizon longer than T and, for that matter, for the infinite horizon problem. A flow chart and a numerical example have been included to illustrate the algorithm.  相似文献

We consider a multiperiod resource allocation problem, where a single resource is allocated over a finite planning horizon of T periods. Resource allocated to one period can be used to satisfy demand of that period or of future periods, but backordering of demand is not allowed. The objective is to allocate the resource as smoothly as possible throughout the planning horizon. We present two models: the first assumes that the allocation decision variables are continuous, whereas the second considers only integer allocations. Applications for such models are found, for example, in subassembly production planning for complex products in a multistage production environment. Efficient algorithms are presented to find optimal allocations for these models at an effort of O(T2). Among all optimal policies for each model, these algorithms find the one that carries the least excess resources throughout the planning horizon. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider the problem of finding the Kth shortest path for a time‐schedule network, where each node in the network has a list of prespecified departure times, and departure from the node can take place only at one of these departure times. We develop a polynomial time algorithm independent of K for finding the Kth shortest path. The proposed algorithm constructs a map structure at each node in the network, using which we can directly find the Kth shortest path without having to enumerate the first K − 1 paths. Since the same map structure is used for different K values, it is not necessary to reconstruct the table for additional paths. Consequently, the algorithm is suitable for directly finding multiple shortest paths in the same network. Furthermore, the algorithm is modified slightly for enumerating the first K shortest paths and is shown to have the lowest possible time complexity under a condition that holds for most practical networks. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The problem treated here involves a mixed fleet of vehicles comprising two types of vehicles: K1 tanker-type vehicles capable of refueling themselves and other vehicles, and K2 nontanker vehicles incapable of refueling. The two groups of vehicles have different fuel capacities as well as different fuel consumption rates. The problem is to find the tanker refueling sequence that maximizes the range attainable for the K2 nontankers. A tanker refueling sequence is a partition of the tankers into m subsets (2 ≤ mK1). A given sequence of the partition provides a realization of the number of tankers participating in each successive refueling operation. The problem is first formulated as a nonlinear mixed-integer program and reduced to a linear program for a fixed sequence which may be solved by a simple recursive procedure. It is proven that a “unit refueling sequence” composed of one tanker refueling at each of K1 refueling operations is optimal. In addition, the problem of designing the “minimum fleet” (minimum number of tankers) required for a given set of K2 nontankers to attain maximal range is resolved. Also studied are extensions to the problem with a constraint on the number of refueling operations, different nontanker recovery base geometry, and refueling on the return trip.  相似文献

A dynamic and nonstationary model is formulated for a firm which attempts to minimize total expected costs over a finite planning horizon. The control variables are price and production. The price p and the demand ζ are linked through the relationship ζ = g(p) + η, where g(p) is the riskless demand curve and η is a random variable. The general model allows for proportional ordering costs, convex holding and stockout costs, downward sloping riskless demand curve, backlogging, partial backlogging, lost sales, partial spoilage of inventory, and two modes of collecting revenue. Sufficient conditions are developed for this problem to have an optimal policy which resembles the single critical number policy known from stochastic inventory theory. It is also shown what set of parameters will satisfy these sufficiency conditions.  相似文献

In this paper a stochastically constrained replacement model is formulated. This model determines a sequence of replacement dates such that the total “current account” cost of all future costs and capital expenditures over an infinite time horizon for the n initial incumbent machines is minimized subject to the constraints that an expected number of machines are in a chosen utility class at any point in time. We then indicate one possible solution method for the model.  相似文献

The dynamic lot-sizing problem with learning in setups is a variation of the Wagner-Whitin lot-sizing problem where the setup costs are a concave, nondecreasing function of the cumulative number of setups. This problem has been a subject of some recent research. We extend the previously studied model to include nonstationary production costs and present an O(T2) algorithm to solve this problem. The worst-case complexity of our algorithm improves the worst-case behavior of the algorithms presently known in the literature. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This article studies the classical single‐item economic lot‐sizing problem with constant capacities, fixed‐plus‐linear order costs, and concave inventory costs, where backlogging is allowed. We propose an O(T3) optimal algorithm for the problem, which improves upon the O(T4) running time of the famous algorithm developed by Florian and Klein (Manage Sci18 (1971) 12–20). Instead of using the standard dynamic programming approach by predetermining the minimal cost for every possible subplan, we develop a backward dynamic programming algorithm to obtain a more efficient implementation. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We study a deterministic two‐machine flowshop scheduling problem with an assumption that one of the two machines is not available in a specified time period. This period can be due to a breakdown, preventive maintenance, or processing unfinished jobs from a previous planning horizon. The problem is known to be NP‐hard. Pseudopolynomial dynamic programming algorithms and heuristics with worst case error bounds are given in the literature to solve the problem. They are different for the cases when the unavailability interval is for the first or second machine. The existence of a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) was formulated as an open conjecture in the literature. In this paper, we show that the two cases of the problem under study are equivalent to similar partition type problems. Then we derive a generic FPTAS for the latter problems with O(n54) time complexity. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2004.  相似文献

This paper considers a group of S identical aircraft, each of which is partitioned into K parts which fail exponentially. The only way in which a failed aircraft can be repaired is by cannibalizing its out-of-commission parts from other failed aircraft. The evolution of the number of good aircraft over time is governed by the transient behavior of an absorbing Markov chain. We can therefore study this behavior by matrix multiplication although the computational problem grows large for K ≥ 3. Some numerical results and some approximations are also provided.  相似文献

A system receives shocks at random points of time. Each shock causes a random amount of damage which accumulates over time. The system fails when the accumulated damage exceeds a fixed threshold. Upon failure the system is replaced by a new one. The damage process is controlled by means of a maintenance policy. There are M possible maintenance actions. Given that a maintenance action m is employed, then the cumulative damage decreases at rate rm. Replacement costs and maintenance costs are considered. The objective is to determine an optimal maintenance policy under the following optimality criteria: (1) long-run average cost; (2) total expected discounted cost over an infinite horizon. For a diffusion approximation, we show that the optimal maintenance expenditure rate is monotonically increasing in the cumulative damage level.  相似文献
