In this study, we propose a new parsimonious policy for the stochastic joint replenishment problem in a single‐location, N‐item setting. The replenishment decisions are based on both group reorder point‐group order quantity and the time since the last decision epoch. We derive the expressions for the key operating characteristics of the inventory system for both unit and compound Poisson demands. In a comprehensive numerical study, we compare the performance of the proposed policy with that of existing ones over a standard test bed. Our numerical results indicate that the proposed policy dominates the existing ones in 100 of 139 instances with comparably significant savings for unit demands. With batch demands, the savings increase as the stochasticity of demand size gets larger. We also observe that it performs well in environments with low demand diversity across items. The inventory system herein also models a two‐echelon setting with a single item, multiple retailers, and cross docking at the upper echelon. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper considers an inventory system in which demand occurrences arise according to a stationary Poisson process, demand sizes at each occurrence follow a logarithmic distribution, and leadtimes are random variables with the gamma distribution. Both the exact and approximate distribution for leadtime demand are derived and computations are performed which compare the approximation to the exact distribution. The results have application to both repairable and consumable item inventory systems.  相似文献

A two‐echelon distribution inventory system with a central warehouse and a number of retailers is considered. The retailers face stochastic demand and replenish from the warehouse, which, in turn, replenishes from an outside supplier. The system is reviewed continuously and demands that cannot be met directly are backordered. Standard holding and backorder costs are considered. In the literature on multi‐echelon inventory control it is standard to assume that backorders at the warehouse are served according to a first come–first served policy (FCFS). This allocation rule simplifies the analysis but is normally not optimal. It is shown that the FCFS rule can, in the worst case, lead to an asymptotically unbounded relative cost increase as the number of retailers approaches infinity. We also provide a new heuristic that will always give a reduction of the expected costs. A numerical study indicates that the average cost reduction when using the heuristic is about two percent. The suggested heuristic is also compared with two existing heuristics. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2007  相似文献

Calculations for large Markovian finite source, finite repair capacity two-echelon repairable item inventory models are shown to be feasible using the randomization technique and a truncated state space approach. More complex models (involving transportation pipelines, multiple-item types and additional echelon levels) are also considered.  相似文献

We consider a two‐echelon inventory system with a manufacturer operating from a warehouse supplying multiple distribution centers (DCs) that satisfy the demand originating from multiple sources. The manufacturer has a finite production capacity and production times are stochastic. Demand from each source follows an independent Poisson process. We assume that the transportation times between the warehouse and DCs may be positive which may require keeping inventory at both the warehouse and DCs. Inventory in both echelons is managed using the base‐stock policy. Each demand source can procure the product from one or more DCs, each incurring a different fulfilment cost. The objective is to determine the optimal base‐stock levels at the warehouse and DCs as well as the assignment of the demand sources to the DCs so that the sum of inventory holding, backlog, and transportation costs is minimized. We obtain a simple equation for finding the optimal base‐stock level at each DC and an upper bound for the optimal base‐stock level at the warehouse. We demonstrate several managerial insights including that the demand from each source is optimally fulfilled entirely from a single distribution center, and as the system's utilization approaches 1, the optimal base‐stock level increases in the transportation time at a rate equal to the demand rate arriving at the DC. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate a two-echelon (base-depot) inventory system of recoverable (repairable) items. The arrivals of demand at the bases are in a Poisson manner and the order sizes are random. The failed units can be repaired either at the base or at the depot, and the units beyond economic repair are condemned. Inspection of the failed units is carried out in the batches they arrive, that is, arrival batches are not broken up. The exact expressions for stationary distribution of depot inventory position, and of the number of backorders, onhand inventory, in-repair inventory at all locations are derived under the assumptions of constant repair and lead times. Special cases of complete recoverability, nonrecoverability, and of the unit order size are also discussed.  相似文献

We consider a single item inventory system with positive and negative stock fluctuations. Items can be purchased from a central stock, n items can be returned for a cost R + rn, and a linear inventory carrying cost is charged. It is shown that for minimizing the asymptotic cost rate when returns are a significant fraction of stock usage, a two-critical-number policy (a,b) is optimal, where b is the trigger level for returns and b – a is the return quantity. The values for a and b are found, as well as the operating characteristics of the system. We also consider the optimal return decision to make at time zero and show that it is partially determined by a and b.  相似文献

Many organizations providing service support for products or families of products must allocate inventory investment among the parts (or, identically, items) that make up those products or families. The allocation decision is crucial in today's competitive environment in which rapid response and low levels of inventory are both required for providing competitive levels of customer service in marketing a firm's products. This is particularly important in high-tech industries, such as computers, military equipment, and consumer appliances. Such rapid response typically implies regional and local distribution points for final products and for spare parts for repairs. In this article we fix attention on a given product or product family at a single location. This single-location problem is the basic building block of multi-echelon inventory systems based on level-by-level decomposition, and our modeling approach is developed with this application in mind. The product consists of field-replaceable units (i.e., parts), which are to be stocked as spares for field service repair. We assume that each part will be stocked at each location according to an (s, S) stocking policy. Moreover, we distinguish two classes of demand at each location: customer (or emergency) demand and normal replenishment demand from lower levels in the multiechelon system. The basic problem of interest is to determine the appropriate policies (si Si) for each part i in the product under consideration. We formulate an approximate cost function and service level constraint, and we present a greedy heuristic algorithm for solving the resulting approximate constrained optimization problem. We present experimental results showing that the heuristics developed have good cost performance relative to optimal. We also discuss extensions to the multiproduct component commonality problem.  相似文献

The design of a system with many locations, each with many items which may fail while in use, is considered. When items fail, they require repair; the particular type of repair being governed by a probability distribution. As repairs may be lengthy, spares are kept on hand to replace failed items. System ineffectiveness is measured by expected weighted shortages over all items and locations, in steady state. This can be reduced by either having more spares or shorter expected repair times. Design consists of a provisioning of the number of spares for each item, by location; and specifying the expected repair times for each type of repair, by item and location. The optimal design minimizes expected shortages within a budget constraint, which covers both (i) procurement of spares and (ii) procurement of equipment and manning levels for the repair facilities. All costs are assumed to be separable so that a Lagrangian approach is fruitful, yielding an implementable algorithm with outputs useful for sensitivity analysis. A numerical example is presented.  相似文献

This paper deals with a periodic review inventory system in which a constant proportion of stock issued to meet demand each period feeds back into the inventory after a fixed number of periods. Various applications of the model are discussed, including blood bank management and the control of reparable item inventories. We assume that on hand inventory is subject to proportional decay. Demands in successive periods are assumed to be independent identically distributed random variables. The functional equation defining an optimal policy is formulated and a myopic base stock approximation is developed. This myopic policy is shown to be optimal for the case where the feedback delay is equal to one period. Both cost and ordering decision comparisons for optimal and myopic policies are carried out numerically for a delay time of two periods over a wide range of input parameter values.  相似文献

In this article we explore how total system costs and inventory positions are affected when forecasts are incorporated explicitly in production/inventory systems. We assume that forecasts for demand of a certain item are available in each period, and they evolve from one period to the next in accordance with an additive evolution model. In order to analyze the effects of the forecasts on the production/inventory system we compare the optimal ordering policy and the expected costs of the model that keeps forecasts with that of a comparable standard inventory model. We show that under mild assumptions the former yields lower expected costs and inventory levels than the latter. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider a single-item inventory system in which the stock level can increase due to items being returned as well as decrease when demands occur. Returned items can be repaired and then used to satisfy future demand, or they can be disposed of. We identify those inventory levels where disposal is the best policy. It is shown that this problem is equivalent to a problem of controlling a single-server queue. When the return and demand processes are both Poisson, we find the optimal policy exactly. When the demand and return processes are more general, we use diffusion approximations to obtain an approximate model, which is then solved. The approximate model requires only mean and variance data. Besides the optimal policy, the output of the models includes such characteristics as the operating costs, the purchase rate for new items, the disposal rate for returned items and the average inventory level. Several numerical examples are given. An interesting by-product of our investigation is an approximation for the steady-state behavior of the bulk GI/G/1 queue with a queue limit.  相似文献

We study an assembly system with a single finished product managed using an echelon base‐stock or order‐up‐to policy. Some or all operations have capacity constraints. Excess demand is either backordered in every period or lost in every period. We show that the shortage penalty cost over any horizon is jointly convex with respect to the base‐stock levels and capacity levels. When the holding costs are also included in the objective function, we show that the cost function can be written as a sum of a convex function and a concave function. Throughout the article, we discuss algorithmic implications of our results for making optimal inventory and capacity decisions in such systems.© 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, a condition-based maintenance model for a multi-unit production system is proposed and analyzed using Markov renewal theory. The units of the system are subject to gradual deterioration, and the gradual deterioration process of each unit is described by a three-state continuous time homogeneous Markov chain with two working states and a failure state. The production rate of the system is influenced by the deterioration process and the demand is constant. The states of the units are observable through regular inspections and the decision to perform maintenance depends on the number of units in each state. The objective is to obtain the steady-state characteristics and the formula for the long-run average cost for the controlled system. The optimal policy is obtained using a dynamic programming algorithm. The result is validated using a semi-Markov decision process formulation and the policy iteration algorithm. Moreover, an analytical expression is obtained for the calculation of the mean time to initiate maintenance using the first passage time theory.  相似文献

We consider a finite horizon periodic review, single product inventory system with a fixed setup cost and two stochastic demand classes that differ in their backordering costs. In each period, one must decide whether and how much to order, and how much demand of the lower class should be satisfied. We show that the optimal ordering policy can be characterized as a state dependent (s,S) policy, and the rationing structure is partially obtained based on the subconvexity of the cost function. We then propose a simple heuristic rationing policy, which is easy to implement and close to optimal for intensive numerical examples. We further study the case when the first demand class is deterministic and must be satisfied immediately. We show the optimality of the state dependent (s,S) ordering policy, and obtain additional rationing structural properties. Based on these properties, the optimal ordering and rationing policy for any state can be generated by finding the optimal policy of only a finite set of states, and for each state in this set, the optimal policy is obtained simply by choosing a policy from at most two alternatives. An efficient algorithm is then proposed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2010  相似文献

This paper considers a discrete time, single item production/inventory system with random period demands. Inventory levels are reviewed periodically and managed using a base‐stock policy. Replenishment orders are placed with the production system which is capacitated in the sense that there is a single server that sequentially processes the items one at a time with stochastic unit processing times. In this setting the variability in demand determines the arrival pattern of production orders at the queue, influencing supply lead times. In addition, the inventory behavior is impacted by the correlation between demand and lead times: a large demand size corresponds to a long lead time, depleting the inventory longer. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, we present an exact procedure based on matrix‐analytic techniques for computing the replenishment lead time distribution given an arbitrary discrete demand distribution. Second, we numerically characterize the distribution of inventory levels, and various other performance measures such as fill rate, base‐stock levels and optimal safety stocks, taking the correlation between demand and lead times into account. Third, we develop an algorithm to fit the first two moments of the demand and service time distribution to a discrete phase‐type distribution with a minimal number of phases. This provides a practical tool to analyze the effect of demand variability, as measured by its coefficient of variation, on system performance. We also show that our model is more appropriate than some existing models of capacitated systems in discrete time. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2007  相似文献

We consider the optimal replacement problem for a fault tolerant system comprised of N components. The components are distingushable, and the state of the system is given by knowing exactly which components are operationl and which have failed. The individual component failure rates depend on the state of the entire system. We assume that the rate at which the system produces income decreases as the system deteriorates and the system replacement cost rises. Individual components cannot be replaced. We give a greedy-type algorithm that produces the replacement policy that maximizes the long-run net system income per unit time.  相似文献

Recent years have seen a strong trend toward outsourcing warranty repair services to outside vendors. In this article we consider the problem of dynamically routing warranty repairs to service vendors when warranties have priority levels. Each time an item under warranty fails, it is sent to one of the vendors for repair. Items covered by higher priority warranty receive higher priority in repair service. The manufacturer pays a fixed fee per repair and incurs a linear holding cost while an item is undergoing or waiting for repair. The objective is to minimize the manufacturer's long‐run average cost. Because of the complexity of the problem, it is very unlikely that there exist tractable ways to find the optimal routing strategies. Therefore, we propose five heuristic routing procedures that are applicable to real‐life problems. We evaluate the heuristics using simulation. The simulation results show that the index‐based “generalized join the shortest queue” policy, which applies a single policy improvement step to an initial state‐independent policy, performs the best among all five heuristics. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bayes adaptive control policies are developed in the present paper for the special case of a one-station lower echelon: a Poisson distribution of demand, whose mean is assumed to have a prior gamma distribution. The cost structure is of a common type. The ordering policy for the upper echelon, which minimizes expected cost, is replaced by a new type of policy, called Bayes prediction policy. This policy does not require tedious computations, of the sort required by dynamic programming solutions. The characteristics of the policies are studied by Monte Carlo simulation, and supplemented by further theoretical development.  相似文献

I examine the problem of determining inventory stockage levels and locations of different parts in a multiechelon system. This stockage problem is complicated by parts commonality—each part may be used by several different end items. Stockage levels and locations of each part affect the availability of end items that use the part, since an end item will be out of service if it requires a part that is not available. Of course, if the part is available at another nearby location, then the end item will be out of service for a shorter period of time. An essential feature of any model for this problem is constraints on operational availability of the end items. Because these constraints would involve nonconvex functions if the stockage levels were allowed to vary continuously, I formulate a 0–1 linear optimization model of the stockage problem. In this model, each part can be stocked at any of a number of prespecified levels at each echelon. The model is to minimize stockage cost of the selected items subject to the end-item availability constraints and limits on the total weight, volume, and number of different parts stocked at each echelon. Advantages and disadvantages of different Lagrangian relaxations and the simplex method with generalized upper-bounding capability are discussed for solving this stockage model.  相似文献
