One way of achieving the increased levels of system reliability and availability demanded by critical computer-based control systems is through the use of fault-tolerant distributed computer systems. This article addresses the problem of allocating a set of m tasks among a set of n processors in a manner that will satisfy various task assignment, system capacity, and task scheduling constraints while balancing the workload across processors. We discuss problem background, problem formulation, and a known heuristic procedure for the problem. A new solution-improving heuristic procedure is introduced, and computational experience with the heuristics is presented. With only a modest increase in the amount of computational effort, the new procedure is demonstrated to improve dramatically solution quality as well as obtain near-optimal solutions to the test problems.  相似文献

We consider an integrated usage and maintenance optimization problem for a k‐out‐of‐n system pertaining to a moving asset. The k‐out‐of‐n systems are commonly utilized in practice to increase availability, where n denotes the total number of parallel and identical units and k the number of units required to be active for a functional system. Moving assets such as aircraft, ships, and submarines are subject to different operating modes. Operating modes can dictate not only the number of system units that are needed to be active, but also where the moving asset physically is, and under which environmental conditions it operates. We use the intrinsic age concept to model the degradation process. The intrinsic age is analogous to an intrinsic clock which ticks on a different pace in different operating modes. In our problem setting, the number of active units, degradation rates of active and standby units, maintenance costs, and type of economic dependencies are functions of operating modes. In each operating mode, the decision maker should decide on the set of units to activate (usage decision) and the set of units to maintain (maintenance decision). Since the degradation rate differs for active and standby units, the units to be maintained depend on the units that have been activated, and vice versa. In order to minimize maintenance costs, usage and maintenance decisions should be jointly optimized. We formulate this problem as a Markov decision process and provide some structural properties of the optimal policy. Moreover, we assess the performance of usage policies that are commonly implemented for maritime systems. We show that the cost increase resulting from these policies is up to 27% for realistic settings. Our numerical experiments demonstrate the cases in which joint usage and maintenance optimization is more valuable. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 64: 418–434, 2017  相似文献

Consider a single‐item, periodic review, infinite‐horizon, undiscounted, inventory model with stochastic demands, proportional holding and shortage costs, and full backlogging. Orders can arrive in every period, and the cost of receiving them is negligible (as in a JIT setting). Every T periods, one audits the current stock level and decides on deliveries for the next T periods, thus incurring a fixed audit cost and—when one schedules deliveries—a fixed order cost. The problem is to find a review period T and an ordering policy that satisfy the average cost criterion. The current article extends an earlier treatment of this problem, which assumed that the fixed order cost is automatically incurred once every T periods. We characterize an optimal ordering policy when T is fixed, prove that an optimal review period T** exists, and develop a global search algorithm for its computation. We also study the behavior of four approximations to T** based on the assumption that the fixed order cost is incurred during every cycle. Analytic results from a companion article (where μ/σ is large) and extensive computational experiments with normal and gamma demand test problems suggest these approximations and associated heuristic policies perform well when μ/σ ≥ 2. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The problem of sequencing jobs on parallel processors when jobs have different available times, due dates, penalty costs and waiting costs is considered. The processors are identical and are available when the earliest job becomes available and continuously thereafter. There is a processor cost during the period when the processor is available for processing jobs. The proposed algorithm finds the sequence (or sequences) with minimum total cost (sum of waiting, penalty and processor costs.). A proof of the algorithm and numerical results are given.  相似文献

We introduce an algorithm, called TMO (Two-Machine Optimal Scheduling) which minimizes the makespan for two identical processors. TMO employs lexicographic search in conjunction with the longest-processing time sequence to derive an optimal schedule. For the m identical parallel processors problem, we propose an improvement algorithm, which improves the seed solution obtained by any existing heuristic. The improvement algorithm, called Extended TMO, breaks the original m-machine problem into a set of two-machine problems and solves them repeatedly by the TMO. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms by comparing it against three existing heuristics: LPT (Graham, [11]), MULTIFIT (Coffman, Garey, and Johnson, [6]), and RMG (Lee and Massey, [17]). The simulation results show that: for the two processors case, the TMO performs significantly better than LPT, MULTIFIT, and RMG, and it generally takes considerably less CPU time than MULTIFIT and RMG. For the general parallel processors case, the Extended TMO algorithm is shown to be capable of greatly improving any seed solution. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Kanet addressed the problem of scheduling n jobs on one machine so as to minimize the sum of absolute lateness under a restrictive assumption on their common due date. This article extends the results to the problem of scheduling n jobs on m parallel identical processors in order to minimize the sum of absolute lateness. Also, a heuristic algorithm for a more general version with no restriction on the common due date, for the problem of n-job single-machine scheduling is presented and its performance is reported.  相似文献

We consider the problem of rescheduling n jobs to minimize the makespan on m parallel identical processors when m changes value. We show this problem to be NP-hard in general. Call a list schedule totally optimal if it is optimal for all m = 1, …,n. When n is less than 6, there always exists a totally optimal schedule, but for n ≥ 6 this can fail. We show that an exact solution is less robust than the largest processing time first (LPT) heuristic and discuss implications for polynomial approximation schemes and hierarchical planning models.  相似文献

In this article we consider a version of the vehicle-routing problem (VRP): A fleet of identical capacitated vehicles serves a system of one warehouse and N customers of two types dispersed in the plane. Customers may require deliveries from the warehouse, back hauls to the warehouse, or both. The objective is to design a set of routes of minimum total length to serve all customers, without violating the capacity restriction of the vehicles along the routes. The capacity restriction here, in contrast to the VRP without back hauls is complicated because amount of capacity used depends on the order the customers are visited along the routes. The problem is NP-hard. We develop a lower bound on the optimal total cost and a heuristic solution for the problem. The routes generated by the heuristic are such that the back-haul customers are served only after terminating service to the delivery customers. However, the heuristic is shown to converge to the optimal solution, under mild probabilistic conditions, as fast as N−0.5. The complexity of the heuristic, as well as the computation of the lower bound, is O(N3) if all customers have unit demand size and O(N3 log N) otherwise, independently of the demand sizes. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This paper examines the discrete equal‐capacity p‐median problem that seeks to locate p new facilities (medians) on a network, each having a given uniform capacity, in order to minimize the sum of distribution costs while satisfying the demand on the network. Such problems arise, for example, in local access and transport area telecommunication network design problems where any number of a set of p facility units can be constructed at the specified candidate sites (hence, the net capacity is an integer multiple of a given unit capacity). We develop various valid inequalities, a separation routine for generating cutting planes that are specific members of such inequalities, as well as an enhanced reformulation that constructs a partial convex hull representation that subsumes an entire class of valid inequalities via its linear programming relaxation. We also propose suitable heuristic schemes for this problem, based on sequentially rounding the continuous relaxation solutions obtained for the various equivalent formulations of the problem. Extensive computational results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed valid inequalities, enhanced formulations, and heuristic schemes. The results indicate that the proposed schemes for tightening the underlying relaxations play a significant role in enhancing the performance of both exact and heuristic solution methods for this class of problems. © 2000 John & Sons, Inc. This article introduces a new optimization problem that involves searching for the spanning tree of minimum cost under a quadratic cost structure. This quadratic minimum spanning tree problem is proven to be NP-hard. A technique for generating lower bounds for this problem is discussed and incorporated into branch-and-bound schemes for obtaining exact solutions. Two heuristic algorithms are also developed. Computational experience with both exact and heuristic algorithms is reported.  相似文献

A two‐echelon distribution inventory system with a central warehouse and a number of retailers is considered. The retailers face stochastic demand and replenish from the warehouse, which, in turn, replenishes from an outside supplier. The system is reviewed continuously and demands that cannot be met directly are backordered. Standard holding and backorder costs are considered. In the literature on multi‐echelon inventory control it is standard to assume that backorders at the warehouse are served according to a first come–first served policy (FCFS). This allocation rule simplifies the analysis but is normally not optimal. It is shown that the FCFS rule can, in the worst case, lead to an asymptotically unbounded relative cost increase as the number of retailers approaches infinity. We also provide a new heuristic that will always give a reduction of the expected costs. A numerical study indicates that the average cost reduction when using the heuristic is about two percent. The suggested heuristic is also compared with two existing heuristics. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2007  相似文献

The problem considered involves the assignment of n facilities to n specified locations. Each facility has a given nonnegative flow from each of the other facilities. The objective is to minimize the sum of transportation costs. Assume these n locations are given as points on a two-dimensional plane and transportation costs are proportional to weighted rectangular distances. Then the problem is formulated as a binary mixed integer program. The number of integer variables (all binary) involved equals the number of facilities squared. Without increasing the number of integer variables, the formulation is extended to include “site costs” Computational results of the formulation are presented.  相似文献

Motivated by the flow of products in the iron and steel industry, we study an identical and parallel machine scheduling problem with batch deliveries, where jobs finished on the parallel machines are delivered to customers in batches. Each delivery batch has a capacity and incurs a cost. The objective is to find a coordinated production and delivery schedule that minimizes the total flow time of jobs plus the total delivery cost. This problem is an extension of the problem considered by Hall and Potts, Ann Oper Res 135 (2005) 41–64, who studied a two‐machine problem with an unbounded number of transporters and unbounded delivery capacity. We first provide a dynamic programming algorithm to solve a special case with a given job assignment to the machines. A heuristic algorithm is then presented for the general problem, and its worst‐case performance ratio is analyzed. The computational results show that the heuristic algorithm can generate near‐optimal solutions. Finally, we offer a fully polynomial‐time approximation scheme for a fixed number of machines. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 63: 492–502, 2016  相似文献

We study the problem of finding the minimum number of identical storage areas required to hold n items for which demand is known and constant. The replenishments of the items within a single storage area may be time phased so as to minimize the maximum total storage capacity required at any time. This is the inventory-packing problem, which can be considered as a variant of the well-known bin-packing problem, where one constraint is nonlinear. We study the worst-case performance of six heuristics used for that earlier problem since the recognition version of the inventory-packing problem is shown to be NP complete. In addition, we describe several new heuristics developed specifically for the inventory-packing problem, and also study their worst-case performance. Any heuristic which only opens a bin when an item will not fit in any (respectively, the last) open bin needs, asymptotically, no more than 25/12 (resp., 9/4) times the optimal number of bins. Improved performance bounds are obtainable if the range from which item sizes are taken is known to be restricted. Extensive computational testing indicates that the solutions delivered by these heuristics are, for most problems, very close to optimal in value.  相似文献

A capacity expansion model with multiple facility types is examined, where different facility types represent different quality levels. Applications for the model can be found in communications networks and production facilities. The model assumes a finite number of discrete time periods. The facilities are expanded over time. Capacity of a high-quality facility can be converted to satisfy demand for a lower-quality facility. The costs considered include capacity expansion costs and excess capacity holding costs. All cost functions are nondecreasing and concave. An algorithm that finds optimal expansion policies requires extensive computations and is practical only for small scale problems. Here, we develop a heuristic that employs so-called distributed expansion policies. It also attempts to decompose the problem into several smaller problems solved independently. The heuristic is computationally efficient. Further, it has consistently found near-optimal solutions.  相似文献

This paper is designed to treat (a) the problem of the determination of the absolute minimum cost, with the associated assignments, when there is no limit, N, on the number of parcels available for shipment in a modified Hitchcock problem. This is accomplished with the use of a transformed cost matrix. C*, to which the so-called transportation paradox does not apply. The general Hitchcock solution using C* gives the cost T*, which is the absolute minimum cost of the original problem, as well as sets of assignments which are readily transformed to give the general assignments of the original problem. The sum of these latter assignments gives the value of Nu, the unbounded N for minimum cost. In addition, this paper is designed to show (b) how the method of reduced matrices may be used, (c) how a particular Hitchcock solution can be used to determine a general solution so that one solution using C* can provide the general answer, (d) how the results may be modified to apply to problems with fixed N, and hence (e) to determine the function of the decreasing T as N approaches Nu, and finally (f) to provide a treatment when the supplies at origin i and/or the demands at destination j, are bounded.  相似文献

A set of edges D called an isolation set, is said to isolate a set of nodes R from an undirected network if every chain between the nodes in R contains at least one edge from the set D. Associated with each edge of the network is a positive cost. The isolation problem is concerned with finding an isolation set such that the sum of its edge costs is a minimum. This paper formulates the problem of determining the minimal cost isolation as a 0–1 integer linear programming problem. An algorithm is presented which applies a branch and bound enumerative scheme to a decomposed linear program whose dual subproblems are minimal cost network flow problems. Computational results are given. The problem is also formulated as a special quadratic assignment problem and an algorithm is presented that finds a local optimal solution. This local solution is used for an initial bound.  相似文献

The container relocation problem (CRP) is concerned with emptying a single yard‐bay which contains J containers each following a given pickup order so as to minimize the total number of relocations made during their retrieval process. The CRP can be modeled as a binary integer programming (IP) problem and is known to be NP‐hard. In this work, we focus on an extension of the CRP to the case where containers are both received and retrieved from a single yard‐bay, and call it the dynamic container relocation problem. The arrival (departure) sequences of containers to (from) the yard‐bay is assumed to be known a priori. A binary IP formulation is presented for the problem. Then, we propose three types of heuristic methods: index based heuristics, heuristics using the binary IP formulation, and a beam search heuristic. Computational experiments are performed on an extensive set of randomly generated test instances. Our results show that beam search heuristic is very efficient and performs better than the other heuristic methods.Copyright © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article our objective is to evaluate the performance of a WSPT (weighted shortest processing time) rule for scheduling n independent jobs where the resources to process these jobs vary over time and a job can be processed by several processors simultaneously. This problem was raised by Baker and Nuttle [2]. A linear-programming (LP) model is formulated to obtain a lower bound on the minimum value of the weighted completion times. The purpose of the model is to provide a basis for evaluating the WSPT heuristic. 1000 experiments were performed using different resource profiles to test the performance of WSPT. Using WSPT, the weighted completion times were found to be, on the average, 0.2% away from their LP lower bounds.  相似文献

The resource leveling problem for a construction system producing a stream of output units is considered. The system is modeled using a critical-path-analysis activity network, from which an extended network is developed for an integrated planning effort of all output units. Activity intensity variables are defined which measure activity demand rates for resources and consequent activity durations for the production of each output unit. A heuristic approach consisting of an iterative nonlinear programming procedure is presented which computes activity durations (intensities) for the minimization of resource capacity costs subject to meeting construction due dates. The application to a major ship overhaul project is described, in which the procedure was used to level workloads of the various labor–trade shops.  相似文献
