In this paper we present a new formulation of the quadratic assignment problem. This is done by transforming the quadratic objective function into a linear objective function by introducing a number of new variables and constraints. The resulting problem is a 0-1 linear integer program with a highly specialized structure. This permits the use of the partitioning scheme of Benders where only the original variables need be considered. The algorithm described thus iterates between two problems. The master problem is a pure 0-1 integer program, and the subproblem is a transportation problem whose optimal solution is shown to be readily available from the master problem in closed form. Computational experience on problems available in the literature is provided.  相似文献

In recent years, much attention has focused on mathematical programming problems with equilibrium constraints. In this article we consider the case where the constraints are complementarity constraints. Problems of this type arise, for instance, in the design of traffic networks. We develop here a descent algorithm for this problem that will converge to a local optimum in a finite number of iterations. The method involves solving a sequence of subproblems that are linear programs. Computational tests comparing our algorithm with the branch-and-bound algorithm in [7] bear out the efficacy of our method. When solving large problems, there is a definite advantage to coupling both methods. A local optimum incumbent provided by our algorithm can significantly reduce the computational effort required by the branch-and-bound algorithm.  相似文献

An optimization model which is frequently used to assist decision makers in the areas of resource scheduling, planning, and distribution is the minimum cost multiperiod network flow problem. This model describes network structure decision-making problems over time. Such problems arise in the areas of production/distribution systems, economic planning, communication systems, material handling systems, traffic systems, railway systems, building evacuation systems, energy systems, as well as in many others. Although existing network solution techniques are efficient, there are still limitations to the size of problems that can be solved. To date, only a few researchers have taken the multiperiod structure into consideration in devising efficient solution methods. Standard network codes are usually used because of their availability and perceived efficiency. In this paper we discuss the development, implementation, and computational testing of a new technique, the forward network simplex method, for solving linear, minimum cost, multiperiod network flow problems. The forward network simplex method is a forward algorithm which exploits the natural decomposition of multiperiod network problems by limiting its pivoting activity. A forward algorithm is an approach to solving dynamic problems by solving successively longer finite subproblems, terminating when a stopping rule can be invoked or a decision horizon found. Such procedures are available for a large number of special structure models. Here we describe the specialization of the forward simplex method of Aronson, Morton, and Thompson to solving multiperiod network network flow problems. Computational results indicate that both the solution time and pivot count are linear in the number of periods. For standard network optimization codes, which do not exploit the multiperiod structure, the pivot count is linear in the number of periods; however, the solution time is quadratic.  相似文献

We present an algorithm for solving a specially structured nonlinear integer resource allocation problem. This problem was motivated by a capacity planning study done at a large Health Maintenance Organization in Texas. Specifically, we focus on a class of nonlinear resource allocation problems that involve the minimization of a convex function over one general convex constraint, a set of block diagonal convex constraints, and bounds on the integer variables. The continuous variable problem is also considered. The continuous problem is solved by taking advantage of the structure of the Karush‐Kuhn‐Tucker (KKT) conditions. This method for solving the continuous problem is then incorporated in a branch and bound algorithm to solve the integer problem. Various reoptimization results, multiplier bounding results, and heuristics are used to improve the efficiency of the algorithms. We show how the algorithms can be extended to obtain a globally optimal solution to the nonconvex version of the problem. We further show that the methods can be applied to problems in production planning and financial optimization. Extensive computational testing of the algorithms is reported for a variety of applications on continuous problems with up to 1,000,000 variables and integer problems with up to 1000 variables. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article considers the order batching problem in steelmaking and continuous‐casting production. The problem is to jointly specify the slabs needed to satisfy each customer order and group all the slabs of different customer orders into production batches. A novel mixed integer programming model is formulated for the problem. Through relaxing the order assignment constraints, a Lagrangian relaxation model is then obtained. By exploiting the relationship between Lagrangian relaxation and column generation, we develop a combined algorithm that contains nested double loops. At the inner loop, the subgradient method is applied for approximating the Lagrangian dual problem and pricing out columns of the master problem corresponding to the linear dual form of the Lagrangian dual problem. At the outer loop, column generation is employed to solve the master problem exactly and adjust Lagrangian multipliers. Computational experiments are carried out using real data collected from a large steel company, as well as on large‐scaled problem instances randomly generated. The results demonstrate that the combined algorithm can obtain tighter lower bound and higher quality solution within an acceptable computation time as compared to the conventional Lagrangian relaxation algorithm. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new technique for solving large‐scale allocation problems with partially observable states and constrained action and observation resources is introduced. The technique uses a master linear program (LP) to determine allocations among a set of control policies, and uses partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) to determine improving policies using dual prices from the master LP. An application is made to a military problem where aircraft attack targets in a sequence of stages, with information acquired in one stage being used to plan attacks in the next. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Naval Research Logistics 47: 607–619, 2000  相似文献

Logistical planning problems are complicated in practice because planners have to deal with the challenges of demand planning and supply replenishment, while taking into account the issues of (i) inventory perishability and storage charges, (ii) management of backlog and/or lost sales, and (iii) cost saving opportunities due to economies of scale in order replenishment and transportation. It is therefore not surprising that many logistical planning problems are computationally difficult, and finding a good solution to these problems necessitates the development of many ad hoc algorithmic procedures to address various features of the planning problems. In this article, we identify simple conditions and structural properties associated with these logistical planning problems in which the warehouse is managed as a cross‐docking facility. Despite the nonlinear cost structures in the problems, we show that a solution that is within ε‐optimality can be obtained by solving a related piece‐wise linear concave cost multi‐commodity network flow problem. An immediate consequence of this result is that certain classes of logistical planning problems can be approximated by a factor of (1 + ε) in polynomial time. This significantly improves upon the results found in literature for these classes of problems. We also show that the piece‐wise linear concave cost network flow problem can be approximated to within a logarithmic factor via a large scale linear programming relaxation. We use polymatroidal constraints to capture the piece‐wise concavity feature of the cost functions. This gives rise to a unified and generic LP‐based approach for a large class of complicated logistical planning problems. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2009  相似文献

A descent algorithm simultaneously capable of solving linear programming, piecewise linear convex minimization, and the linear complementarity problem is developed. Conditions are given under which a solution can be found in a finite number of iterations using the geometry of the problem. A computer algorithm is developed and test problems are solved by both this method and Lemke's algorithm. Current results indicate a decrease in the number of cells visited but an increase in the total number of pivots needed to solve the problem.  相似文献

The nucleolus solution for cooperative games in characteristic function form is usually computed numerically by solving a sequence of linear programing (LP) problems, or by solving a single, but very large‐scale, LP problem. This article proposes an algebraic method to compute the nucleolus solution analytically (i.e., in closed‐form) for a three‐player cooperative game in characteristic function form. We first consider cooperative games with empty core and derive a formula to compute the nucleolus solution. Next, we examine cooperative games with nonempty core and calculate the nucleolus solution analytically for five possible cases arising from the relationship among the value functions of different coalitions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A posynomial geometric programming problem formulated so that the number of objective function terms is equal to the number of primal variables will have a zero degree of difficulty when augmented by multiplying each constraint term by a slack variable and including a surrogate constraint composed of the product of the slack variables, each raised to an undetermined negative exponent or surrogate multiplier. It is assumed that the original problem is canonical. The exponents in the constraint on the product of the slack variables must be estimated so that the associated solution to the augmented problem, obtained immediately, also solves the original problem. An iterative search procedure for finding the required exponents, thus solving the original problem, is described. The search procedure has proven quite efficient, often requiring only two or three iterations per degree of difficulty of the original problem. At each iteration the well-known procedure for solving a geometric programming problem with a zero degree of difficulty is used and so computations are simple. The solution generated at each iteration is optimal for a problem which differs from the original problem only in the values of some of the constraint coefficients, so intermediate solutions provide useful information.  相似文献

We show that the linear objective function of a search problem can be generalized to a power function and/or a logarithmic function and still be minimized by an index priority rule. We prove our result by solving the differential equation resulting from the required invariance condition, therefore, we also prove that any other generalization of this linear objective function will not lead to an index priority rule. We also demonstrate the full equivalence between two related search problems in the sense that a solution to either one can be used to solve the other one and vice versa. Finally, we show that the linear function is the only function leading to an index priority rule for the single‐machine makespan minimization problem with deteriorating jobs and an additive job deterioration function. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Charnes and Cooper [1] showed that a linear programming problem with a linear fractional objective function could be solved by solving at most two ordinary linear programming problems. In addition, they showed that where it is known a priori that the denominator of the objective function has a unique sign in the feasible region, only one problem need be solved. In the present note it is shown that if a finite solution to the problem exists, only one linear programming problem must be solved. This is because the denominator cannot have two different signs in the feasible region, except in ways which are not of practical importance.  相似文献

The reformulation‐linearization technique (RLT) is a methodology for constructing tight linear programming relaxations of mixed discrete problems. A key construct is the multiplication of “product factors” of the discrete variables with problem constraints to form polynomial restrictions, which are subsequently linearized. For special problem forms, the structure of these linearized constraints tends to suggest that certain classes may be more beneficial than others. We examine the usefulness of subsets of constraints for a family of 0–1 quadratic multidimensional knapsack programs and perform extensive computational tests on a classical special case known as the 0–1 quadratic knapsack problem. We consider RLT forms both with and without these inequalities, and their comparisons with linearizations derived from published methods. Interestingly, the computational results depend in part upon the commercial software used. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2010  相似文献

In this paper, we develop efficient deterministic algorithms for globally minimizing the sum and the product of several linear fractional functions over a polytope. We will show that an elaborate implementation of an outer approximation algorithm applied to the master problem generated by a parametric transformation of the objective function serves as an efficient method for calculating global minima of these nonconvex minimization problems if the number of linear fractional terms in the objective function is less than four or five. It will be shown that the Charnes–Cooper transformation plays an essential role in solving these problems. Also a simple bounding technique using linear multiplicative programming techniques has remarkable effects on structured problems. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper presents an algorithm for solving the integer programming problem possessing a separable nonlinear objective function subject to linear constraints. The method is based on a generalization of the Balas implicit enumeration scheme. Computational experience is given for a set of seventeen linear and seventeen nonlinear test problems. The results indicate that the algorithm can solve the nonlinear integer programming problem in roughly the equivalent time required to solve the linear integer programming problem of similar size with existing algorithms. Although the algorithm is specifically designed to solve the nonlinear problem, the results indicate that the algorithm compares favorably with the Branch and Bound algorithm in the solution of linear integer programming problems.  相似文献

This paper studies the one-period, general network distribution problem with linear costs. The approach is to decompose the problem into a transportation problem that represents a stocking decision, and into decoupled newsboy problems that represent the realization of demand with the usual associated holding and shortage costs. This approach leads to a characterization of optimal policies in terms of the dual of the transportation problem. This method is not directly suitable for the solution for large problems, but the exact solution for small problems can be obtained. For the numerical solutions of large problems, the problem has been formulated as a linear program with column generation. This latter approach is quite robust in the sense that it is easily extended to incorporate capacity constraints and the multiproduct case.  相似文献
