Optimization of friction stir welding parameters for improved corrosion resistance of AA2219 aluminum alloy joints

The aluminium alloy AA2219(Al—Cu—Mg alloy) is widely used in the fabrication of lightweight structures with high strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance.Welding is main fabrication method of AA2219 alloy for manufacturing various engineering components.Friction stir welding(FSW) is a recently developed solid state welding process to overcome the problems encountered in fusion welding.This process uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat on the abutting surfaces.The welding parameters,such as tool pin profile,rotational speed,welding speed and axial force,play major role in determining the microstructure and corrosion resistance of welded joint.The main objective of this work is to develop a mathematical model to predict the corrosion resistance of friction stir welded AA2219 aluminium alloy by incorporating FSW process parameters.In this work a central composite design with four factors and five levels has been used to minimize the experimental conditions.Dynamic polarization testing was carried out to determine critical pitting potential in millivolt,which is a criteria for measuring corrosion resistance and the data was used in model.Further the response surface method(RSM) was used to develop the model.The developed mathematical model was optimized using the simulated annealing algorithm optimizing technique to maximize the corrosion resistance of the friction stir welded AA2219 aluminium alloy joints.

The perfectibility, rather than the existence of nuclear deterrence, is the paramount issue. The author also contends that in remaining fixated on civilian deaths and using Hiroshima and Nagasaki as his litmus test, Wilson fails to adequately consider whether there are other potential nuclear harms—fundamentally different in scale, scope, and moral and existential ramifications—that potentially can terrify societies enough to make nuclear deterrence a perfect or nearly perfect mode of security.

Customer delays in M/M/c repair systems with spares

A service center to which customers bring failed items for repair is considered. The items are exchangeable in the sense that a customer is ready to take in return for the failed item he brought to the center any good item of the same kind. This exchangeability feature makes it possible for the service center to possess spares. The focus of the article is on customer delay in the system—the time that elapses since the arrival of a customer with a failed item and his departure with a good one—when repaired items are given to waiting customers on a FIFO basis. An algorithm is developed for the computation of the delay distribution when the item repair system operates as an M/M/c queue.     

Dynamic pricing under first order Markovian competition

We evaluate the effect of competition on prices, profits, and consumers' surplus in multiperiod, finite horizon, dynamic pricing settings. In our base model, a single myopic consumer visits two competing retailers, who offer identical goods, in a (first order Markovian) probabilistic fashion—if the posted price exceeds the consumer's valuation for the good, he returns to the same store in the following period with a certain probability. We find that even a small reduction in the return probability from one—which corresponds to the monopoly case at which prices decline linearly—is sufficient to revert the price decline from a linear into an exponential shape. Each retailer's profit is particularly sensitive to changes in his return probability when it is relatively high, and is maximized under complete loyalty behavior (i.e., return probability is one). On the other hand, consumer surplus is maximized under complete switching behavior (i.e., return probability is zero). In the presence of many similar consumers, the insights remain valid. We further focus on the extreme scenario where all consumers follow a complete switching behavior, to derive sharp bounds, and also consider the instance where, in this setting, myopic consumers are replaced with strategic consumers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
