We present some results for M/M/1 queues with finite capacities with delayed feedback. The delay in the feedback to an M/M/1 queue is modelled as another M-server queue with a finite capacity. The steady state probabilities for the two dimensional Markov process {N(t), M(t)} are solved when N(t) = queue length at server 1 at t and M(t) = queue length at server 2 at t. It is shown that a matrix operation can be performed to obtain the steady state probabilities. The eigenvalues of the operator and its eigenvectors are found. The problem is solved by fitting boundary conditions to the general solution and by normalizing. A sample problem is run to show that the solution methods can be programmed and meaningful results obtained numerically.  相似文献

Queueing systems which include the possibility for a customer to return to the same server for additional service are called queueing systems with feedback. Such systems occur in computer networks for example. In these systems a chosen customer will wait in the queue, be serviced and then, with probability p, return to wait again, be serviced again and continue this process until, with probability (1 – p) = q, it departs the system never to return. The time of waiting plus service time, the nth time the customer goes through, we will call his nth sojourn time. The (random) sum of these sojourn times we will call the total sojourn time (abbreviated, sojourn time when there is no confusion which sojourn time we are talking about). In this paper we study the total sojourn time in a queueing system with feedback. We give the details for M/G/1 queues in which the decision to feedback or not is a Bernoulli process. While the details of the computations can be more difficult, the structure of the sojourn time process is unchanged for the M/G/1 queue with a more general decision process as will be shown. The G/G/R machine repair problem with M operating machines, S warm standby spares, and R repairmen is studied as a diffusion process. The steady-state equations are formulated as diffusion equations subject to two reflecting barriers. The approximate diffusion parameters of the diffusion equations are obtained (1) under the assumption that the input characteristics of the problem are defined only by their first two moments rather than their probability distribution function, (2) under the assumption of heavy traffic approximation, that is, when queues of failed machines in the repair stage are almost always nonempty, and (3) using well-known asymptotic results from renewal theory. Expressions for the probability density functions of the number of failed machines in the system are obtained. A study of the derived approximate results, compared to some of the exact results, suggests that the diffusion approach provides a useful method for solving complex machine-repair problems.  相似文献

This paper deals with the bulk arrival queueing system MX/G/1 and its ramifications. In the system MX/G/1, customers arrive in groups of size X (a random variable) by a Poisson process, the service times distribution is general, and there is a single server. Although some results for this queueing system have appeared in various books, no unified account of these, as is being presented here, appears to have been reported so far. The chief objectives of the paper are (i) to unify by an elegant procedure the relationships between the p.g.f.'s

This paper extends the Low-Lippman M/M/1 model to the case of Gamma service times. Specifically, we have a queue in which arrivals are Poisson, service time is Gamma-distributed, and the arrival rate to the system is subject to setting an admission fee p. The arrival rate λ(p) is non-increasing in p. We prove that the optimal admission fee p* is a non-decreasing function of the customer work load on the server. The proof is for an infinite capacity queue and holds for the infinite horizon continuous time Markov decision process. In the special case of exponential service time, we extend the Low-Lippman model to include a state-dependent service rate and service cost structure (for finite or infinite time horizon and queue capacity). Relatively recent dynamic programming techniques are employed throughout the paper. Due to the large class of functions represented by the Gamma family, the extension is of interest and utility.  相似文献

The queue size process (t)0tt0 of the batch arrival queue MX/M/1 is studied under the condition that the duration of its busy period is larger than t0. Explicit formulas for the transition probabilities are given and the limiting Markov process for t0 → ∞ is investigated. Several properties of this process are considered. In any model for a sonar detection process, some assumption must be made about the nature of the acoustic fluctuation process. Two processes that are widely used in this role are the jump process and the Gauss-Markov process. These processes are similar in that they are both stationer) Markov processes and have autocovariance functions of the form s?2exp(—γt). For these reasons, it might be believed that one could use either of these processes and get comparable results if all one is interested in is computing cumulative detection probabilities or mean time to gain or lose contact. However, such is not the case in that vastly different results can be obtained in some applications. An application of this sort is presented. We also present necessary and sufficient conditions for a threshold to have the property that it is almost surely crossed by the jump process, or by the Gauss-Markov process. This paper examines various models for maintenance of a machine operating subject to stochastic deterioration. Three alternative models are presented for the deterioration process. For each model, in addition to the replacement decision, the option exists of performing preventive maintenance. The effect of this maintenance is to “slow” the deterioration process. With an appropriate reward structure imposed on the processes, the models are formulated as continuous time Markov decision processes. the optimality criterion being the maximization of expected discounted reward earned over an infinite time horizon. For each model conditions are presented under which the optimal maintenance policy exhibits the following monotonic structure. First, there exists a control limit rule for replacement. That is, there exists a number i* such that if the state of machine deterioration exceeds i* the optimal policy replaces the machine by a new machine. Secondly, prior to replacement the optimal level of preventive maintenance is a nonincreasing function of the state of machine deterioration. The conditions which guarantee this result have a cost/benefit interpretation.  相似文献

This study investigates the statistical process control application for monitoring queue length data in M/G/1 systems. Specifically, we studied the average run length (ARL) characteristics of two different control charts for detecting changes in system utilization. First, the nL chart monitors the sums of successive queue length samples by subgrouping individual observations with sample size n. Next is the individual chart with a warning zone whose control scheme is specified by two pairs of parameters, (upper control limit, du) and (lower control limit, dl), as proposed by Bhat and Rao (Oper Res 20 (1972) 955–966). We will present approaches to calculate ARL for the two types of control charts using the Markov chain formulation and also investigate the effects of parameters of the control charts to provide useful design guidelines for better performance. We consider a processing network in which jobs arrive at a fork‐node according to a renewal process. Each job requires the completion of m tasks, which are instantaneously assigned by the fork‐node to m task‐processing nodes that operate like G/M/1 queueing stations. The job is completed when all of its m tasks are finished. The sojourn time (or response time) of a job in this G/M/1 fork‐join network is the total time it takes to complete the m tasks. Our main result is a closed‐form approximation of the sojourn‐time distribution of a job that arrives in equilibrium. This is obtained by the use of bounds, properties of D/M/1 and M/M/1 fork‐join networks, and exploratory simulations. Statistical tests show that our approximation distributions are good fits for the sojourn‐time distributions obtained from simulations. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article provides a Bayes approach for the quality control of a production process which is defined by an M/G/1 queue. An inspection procedure which is jointly optimal from the queue's operational characteristics and quality-control perspectives is found using a queue-inspection renewal cycle analysis (with overall expected profit per unit time as the optimization objective). Numerical results are obtained, highlighting the relationships between quality control and (queue-like) production management.  相似文献

We consider a finite-capacity single-server queue in which arrivals occur one at a time, according to a renewal process. The successive service times are mutually independent and have a common phase-type distribution. The customers are served in groups of size at least L, a preassigned threshold value. Explicit analytic expressions for the steady-state queue-length densities at arrivals and at arbitrary time points, and the throughput of the system are obtained. The Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the stationary waiting-time distribution of an admitted customer at points of arrivals is computed. It is shown to be of phase type when the arrival process is also of phase type. Efficient algorithmic procedures for the steady-state analysis of the model are presented. These procedures are used in arriving at an optimal value for L that minimizes the mean waiting time of an admitted customer. A conjecture on the nature of the mean waiting time is proposed.  相似文献

Recent efforts to improve lower bounds in implicit enumeration algorithms for the general (n/m/G/Fmax) sequencing problem have been directed to the solution of an auxiliary single machine problem that results from the relaxation of some of the interference constraints. We develop an algorithm that obtains optimal and near optimal solutions for this relaxed problem with relatively little computational effort. We report on computational results achieved when this method is used to obtain lower bounds for the general problem. Finally, we show the equivalence of this problem to a single machine sequencing problem with earliest start and due date constraints where the objective is to minimize the maximum lateness.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new replenishment policy for inventory control in a two‐level distribution system consisting of one central warehouse and an arbitrary number of nonidentical retailers. The new policy is designed to control the replenishment process at the central warehouse, using centralized information regarding the inventory positions and demand processes of all installations in the system. The retailers on the other hand are assumed to use continuous review (R, Q) policies. A technique for exact evaluation of the expected inventory holding and backorder costs for the system is presented. Numerical results indicate that there are cases when considerable savings can be made by using the new (α0, Q0) policy instead of a traditional echelon‐ or installation‐stock (R, Q) policy. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The M/G/1 queue with single and multiple server vacations is studied under both the preemptive and non-preemptive priority regimes. A unified methodology is developed to derive the Laplace-Stieltjes transform and first two moments of the waiting time Wk of a class-k customer for each of the four models analyzed. If the number of customers in a queueing system as a function of time has a proper limiting steady‐state distribution, then that steady‐state distribution can be estimated from system data by fitting a general stationary birth‐and‐death (BD) process model to the data and solving for its steady‐state distribution using the familiar local‐balance steady‐state equation for BD processes, even if the actual process is not a BD process. We show that this indirect way to estimate the steady‐state distribution can be effective for periodic queues, because the fitted birth and death rates often have special structure allowing them to be estimated efficiently by fitting parametric functions with only a few parameters, for example, 2. We focus on the multiserver Mt/GI/s queue with a nonhomogeneous Poisson arrival process having a periodic time‐varying rate function. We establish properties of its steady‐state distribution and fitted BD rates. We also show that the fitted BD rates can be a useful diagnostic tool to see if an Mt/GI/s model is appropriate for a complex queueing system. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Computational formulas are given for the mean, variance, and autocorrelation function of the demand process at an upper-echelon facility (warehouse). The demand process at the warehouse is induced by the aggregated inventory replenishment processes of N independently operated lower-echelon facilities (stores) in parallel. Each store, we assume, employs an (s,S) inventory replenishment policy with complete backlogging to satisfy its own random, independently and identically distributed demand. The formulas result from an analysis of the stochastic replenishment process at a single store. Examples of the properties of the demand process at the upper-echelon facility are presented for several lower-echelon environments.  相似文献

Capacity expansion refers to the process of adding facilities or manpower to meet increasing demand. Typical capacity expansion decisions are characterized by uncertain demand forecasts and uncertainty in the eventual cost of expansion projects. This article models capacity expansion within the framework of piecewise deterministic Markov processes and investigates the problem of controlling investment in a succession of same type projects in order to meet increasing demand with minimum cost. In particular, we investigate the optimality of a class of investment strategies called cutoff strategies. These strategies have the property that there exists some undercapacity level M such that the strategy invests at the maximum available rate at all levels above M and does not invest at any level below M. Cutoff strategies are appealing because they are straightforward to implement. We determine conditions on the undercapacity penalty function that ensure the existence of optimal cutoff strategies when the cost of completing a project is exponentially distributed. A by-product of the proof is an algorithm for determining the optimal strategy and its cost. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

From an original motivation in quantitative inventory modeling, we develop methods for testing the hypothesis that the service times of an M/G/1 queue are exponentially distributed, given a sequence of observations of customer line and/or system waits. The approaches are mostly extensions of the well-known exponential goodness-of-fit test popularized by Gnedenko, which results from the observation that the sum of a random exponential sample is Erlang distributed and thus that the quotient of two independent exponential sample means is F distributed.  相似文献
