This paper considers the problem of locating one or more new facilities on a continuous plane, where the destinations or customers, and even the facilities, may be represented by areas and not points. The objective is to locate the facilities in order to minimize a sum of transportation costs. What is new in this study is that the relevant distances are the distances from the closest point in the facility to the closest point in the demand areas. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper presents several models for the location of facilities subject to congestion. Motivated by applications to locating servers in communication networks and automatic teller machines in bank systems, these models are developed for situations in which immobile service facilities are congested by stochastic demand originating from nearby customer locations. We consider this problem from three different perspectives, that of (i) the service provider (wishing to limit costs of setup and operating servers), (ii) the customers (wishing to limit costs of accessing and waiting for service), and (iii) both the service provider and the customers combined. In all cases, a minimum level of service quality is ensured by imposing an upper bound on the server utilization rate at a service facility. The latter two perspectives also incorporate queueing delay costs as part of the objective. Some cases are amenable to an optimal solution. For those cases that are more challenging, we either propose heuristic procedures to find good solutions or establish equivalence to other well‐studied facility location problems. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article we investigate the problem of locating a facility among a given set of demand points when the weights associated with each demand point change in time in a known way. It is assumed that the location of the facility can be changed one or more times during the time horizon. We need to find the time “breaks” when the location of the facility is to be changed, and the location of the facility during each time segment between breaks. We investigate the minisum Weber problem and also minimax facility location. For the former we show how to calculate the objective function for given time breaks and optimally solve the rectilinear distance problem with one time break and linear change of weights over time. Location of multiple time breaks is also discussed. For minimax location problems we devise two algorithms that solve the problem optimally for any number of time breaks and any distance metric. These algorithms are also applicable to network location problems.  相似文献

The facility location and capacity acquisition decisions are intertwined, especially within the international context where capacity acquisition costs are location dependent. A review of the relevant literature however, reveals that the facility location and the capacity acquisition problems have been dealt with separately. Thus, an integrated approach for simultaneous optimization of these strategic decisions is presented. Analytical properties of the arising model are investigated and an algorithm for solving the problem is devised. This paper extends traditional production/distribution system analysis to address raw material, factories, and markets located beyond Earth. It explains the eventual advantages of such operations and discusses likely sites in the solar system. It furnishes a typology for production/distribution systems, assessing the fit of each type to space operations. It briefly reviews the physics of orbits. It develops transportation and inventory cost functions for the simplest case of Hohmann trajectories, and for transportation between circular orbits of similar radii using higher‐energy trajectories. These cost functions are used to derive a model of production/distribution system cost, the minimization of which selects an optimal factory location. The paper suggests potential extensions to this work, and concludes with ideas for location research on the novel reaches of extraterrestrial space. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Consider a monopolist who sells a single product to time‐sensitive customers located on a line segment. Customers send their orders to the nearest distribution facility, where the firm processes (customizes) these orders on a first‐come, first‐served basis before delivering them. We examine how the monopolist would locate its facilities, set their capacities, and price the product offered to maximize profits. We explicitly model customers' waiting costs due to both shipping lead times and queueing congestion delays and allow each customer to self‐select whether she orders or not, based on her reservation price. We first analyze the single‐facility problem and derive a number of interesting insights regarding the optimal solution. We show, for instance, that the optimal capacity relates to the square root of the customer volume and that the optimal price relates additively to the capacity and transportation delay costs. We also compare our solutions to a similar problem without congestion effects. We then utilize our single‐facility results to treat the multi‐facility problem. We characterize the optimal policy for serving a fixed interval of customers from multiple facilities when customers are uniformly distributed on a line. We also show how as the length of the customer interval increases, the optimal policy relates to the single‐facility problem of maximizing expected profit per unit distance. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article introduces the twin robots scheduling problem (TRSP), in which two robots positioned at the opposite ends of a rail are required to deliver items to positions along the rail, and the objective is to minimize the makespan. The problem dealt with in this article is as follows. There are n “demand points” on a sphere. Each demand point has a weight which is a positive constant. A facility must be located so that the maximum of the weighted distances (distances are the shortest arcs on the surface of the sphere) is minimized; this is called the minimax problem. Alternatively, in the maximin problem, the minimum weighted distance is maximized. A setup cost associated with each demand point may be added for generality. It is shown that any maximin problem can be reparametrized into a minimax problem. A method for finding local minimax points is described and conditions under which these are global are derived. Finally, an efficient algorithm for finding the global minimax point is constructed.  相似文献

Location models commonly represent demand as discrete points rather than as continuously spread over an area. This modeling technique introduces inaccuracies to the objective function and consequently to the optimal location solution. In this article this inaccuracy is investigated by the study of a particular competitive facility location problem. First, the location problem is formulated over a continuous demand area. The optimal location for a new facility that optimizes the objective function is obtained. This optimal location solution is then compared with the optimal location obtained for a discrete set of demand points. Second, a simple approximation approach to the continuous demand formulation is proposed. The location problem can be solved by using the discrete demand algorithm while significantly reducing the inaccuracies. This way the simplicity of the discrete approach is combined with the approximated accuracy of the continuous-demand location solution. Extensive analysis and computations of the test problem are reported. It is recommended that this approximation approach be considered for implementation in other location models. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This article considers the preventive flow interception problem (FIP) on a network. Given a directed network with known origin‐destination path flows, each generating a certain amount of risk, the preventive FIP consists of optimally locating m facilities on the network in order to maximize the total risk reduction. A greedy search heuristic as well as several variants of an ascent search heuristic and of a tabu search heuristic are presented for the FIP. Computational results indicate that the best versions of the latter heuristics consistently produce optimal or near optimal solutions on test problems. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this article a bicriteria model, formed by the weighted sum of the minisum and minimax functions for a single-location problem, is investigated. It is shown that all efficient solutions generated by either constrained model are also properly efficient. The bicriteria model and the constrained models are theoretically equivalent, but it is more efficient and simpler to generate nondominated solutions using the constrained criterion approach. When solving the bicriteria model, a critical range is found for which all properly efficient solutions are generated.  相似文献

This article concerns the location of a facility among n points where the points are serviced by “tours” taken from the facility. Tours include m points at a time and each group of m points may become active (may need a tour) with some known probability. Distances are assumed to be rectilinear. For m ≤ 3, it is proved that the objective function is separable in each dimension and an exact solution method is given that involves finding the median of numbers appropriately generated from the problem data. It is shown that the objective function becomes multimodal when some tours pass through four or more points. A bounded heuristic procedure is suggested for this latter case. This heuristic involves solving an auxiliary three-point tour location problem.  相似文献

A procedure for obtaining a facilities scatter diagram within a rectangular boundary is developed using a multifacility location model. This method gives favorable computational results and has the advantage over other scatter diagram methods of being able to accommodate fixed facility locations. Examples illustrate how this method can be used by a designer/analyst either as a one-step algorithm or iteratively to build a layout.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce the capacitated warehouse location model with risk pooling (CLMRP), which captures the interdependence between capacity issues and the inventory management at the warehouses. The CLMRP models a logistics system in which a single plant ships one type of product to a set of retailers, each with an uncertain demand. Warehouses serve as the direct intermediary between the plant and the retailers for the shipment of the product and also retain safety stock to provide appropriate service levels to the retailers. The CLMRP minimizes the sum of the fixed facility location, transportation, and inventory carrying costs. The model simultaneously determines warehouse locations, shipment sizes from the plant to the warehouses, the working inventory, and safety stock levels at the warehouses and the assignment of retailers to the warehouses. The costs at each warehouse exhibit initially economies of scale and then an exponential increase due to the capacity limitations. We show that this problem can be formulated as a nonlinear integer program in which the objective function is neither concave nor convex. A Lagrangian relaxation solution algorithm is proposed. The Lagrangian subproblem is also a nonlinear integer program. An efficient algorithm is developed for the linear relaxation of this subproblem. The Lagrangian relaxation algorithm provides near‐optimal solutions with reasonable computational requirements for large problem instances. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. M. Kress, in 1984, studied the chance-constrained critical path problem. The author proved that if the project time random variables follow a class of location-scale probability distributions, then there exists a specific threshold confidence level, such that the critical path for the system remains the same for all higher confidence levels. The purpose of this article is to study the similar properties for a general chance-constrained linear programming (C2LP) problems with location-scale probability distributions. 为提高三星时差定位系统的定位精度,需要将系统在不同时间得到的多个定位估计结果进行统计综合。本文提出了一种基于子协方差阵加权的定位数据综合算法。该算法根据单点定位精度分析结果,先利用定位误差协方差的二维子阵的逆矩阵作为权矩阵,通过加权最小二乘估计目标空间三维坐标位置中的其中两维,再利用WGS-84地球模型求解另一维坐标。仿真实验表明,相比已有算法,所提新算法可以明显提高定位精度。  相似文献
