The problem of scheduling n jobs on m parallel machines is considered when the machines are subject to random breakdowns and job processing times are random variables. An objective function of mean flow time is developed for a general parallel machine system, and an expression of its expected value is derived. The problem is transformed into a deterministic unrelated parallel machine scheduling model with modified processing times when the number of breakdowns is modeled as a generalized Poisson process. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The minimum makespan of the general parallel machine scheduling problem with m machines and n jobs is studied. As for a number of other important combinatorial problems, the theory of empirical processes proves to be a very elegant and powerful tool for the probabilistic analysis of the solution value. It is used in this paper to derive a scheduling constant θ such that, for random processing times, the minimum makespan almost surely grows as θn when n goes to infinity. Moreover, a thorough probabilistic analysis is performed on the difference between the minimum makespan and θn. Explicit expressions for the scheduling constant are given for an arbitrary number of unrelated machines with identically distributed processing times (with an increasing failure rate), and for an arbitrary number of uniform machines and generally distributed processing times. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This article considers a particular printed circuit board (PCB) assembly system employing surface mount technology. Multiple, identical automatic placement machines, a variety of board types, and a large number of component types characterize the environment studied. The problem addressed is that of minimizing the makespan for assembling a batch of boards with a secondary objective of reducing the mean flow time. The approach adopted is that of grouping boards into production families, allocating component types to placement machines for each family, dividing of families into board groups with similar processing times, and the scheduling of groups. A complete setup is incurred only when changing over between board families. For the environment studied, precedence constraints on the order of component placement do not exist, and placement times are independent of feeder location. Heuristic solution procedures are proposed to create board subfamilies (groups) for which the component mounting times are nearly identical within a subfamily. Assignment of the same component type to multiple machines is avoided. The procedures use results from the theory of open-shop scheduling and parallel processor scheduling to sequence boards on machines. Note that we do not impose an open-shop environment but rather model the problem in the context of an open shop, because the order of component mountings is immaterial. Three procedures are proposed for allocating components to machines and subsequently scheduling boards on the machines. The first two procedures assign components to machines to balance total work load. For scheduling purposes, the first method groups boards into subfamilies to adhere to the assumptions of the open-shop model, and the second procedure assumes that each board is a subfamily and these are scheduled in order of shortest total processing time. The third procedure starts by forming board subfamilies based on total component similarity and then assigns components to validate the open-shop model. We compare the performance of the three procedures using estimated daily, two-day, and weekly production requirements by averaging quarterly production data for an actual cell consisting of five decoupled machines. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper we study a machine repair problem in which a single unreliable server maintains N identical machines. The breakdown times of the machines are assumed to follow an exponential distribution. The server is subject to failure and the failure times are exponentially distributed. The repair times of the machine and the service times of the repairman are assumed to be of phase type. Using matrix‐analytic methods, we perform steady state analysis of this model. The time spent by a failed machine in service and the total time in the repair facility are shown to be of phase type. Several performance measures are evaluated. An optimization problem to determine the number of machines to be assigned to the server that will maximize the expected total profit per unit time is discussed. An illustrative numerical example is presented. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 50: 462–480, 2003  相似文献

In the classical multiprocessor scheduling problem independent jobs must be assigned to parallel, identical machines with the objective of minimizing the makespan. This article explores the effect of assignment restrictions on the jobs for multiprocessor scheduling problems. This means that each job can only be processed on a specific subset of the machines. Particular attention is given to the case of processing times restricted to one of two values, 1 and λ, differing by at most 2. A matching based polynomial time ε‐approximation algorithm is developed that has a performance ratio tending to . This algorithm is shown to have the best possible performance, tending to 3/2, for processing times 1 and 2. For the special case of nested processing sets, i.e., when the sets of machines upon which individual jobs may be assigned are non‐overlapping, the behavior of list scheduling algorithms is explored. Finally, for assignment restrictions determined by just one characteristic of the machines, such as disc storage or memory constraint in the case of high performance computing, we contribute an algorithm that provides a 3/2 worst case bound and runs in time linear in the number of jobs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider a system of N (nonsymmetric) machine centers of the K-out-of-M : G type that are maintained by a single repairman. [A machine center functions if and only if at least K of the M machines belonging to the center are good (G).] Such systems are commonly found in various manufacturing and service industries. A stochastic model is developed that accommodates generally distributed repair times and repairman walk times, and most repair scheduling disciplines. K-out-of-M : G type systems also appear as a modeling paradigm in reliability analysis and polling systems performance analysis. Several performance measures are derived for machine-repair systems having K-out-of-M-type centers. A simple example system is developed in detail that exposes the computations involved in modeling applications. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A key problem in project management is to decide which activities are the most important to manage and how best to manage them. A considerable amount of literature has been devoted to assigning “importance” measures to activities to help with this important task. When activity times are modeled as random variables, these activity importance measures are more complex and difficult to use. A key problem with all existing measures is that they summarize the importance in a single number. The result is that it is difficult for managers to determine a range of times for an activity that might be acceptable or unacceptable. In this paper, we develop sensitivity curves that display the most useful measures of project performance (in terms of schedule) as a function of an activity's time. The structure of the networks allows us to efficiently estimate these curves for all desired activities, all desired time ranges, and all desired measures in a single set of simulation runs. The resulting curves provide insights that are not available when considering summarized measures alone. Chief among these insights is the ability to identify an acceptable range of times for an activity that will not lead to negative scheduling consequences. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper deals with flowshop/sum of completion times scheduling problems, working under a “no-idle” or a “no-wait” constraint, the former prescribes for the machines to work continuously without idle intervals and the latter for the jobs to be processed continuously without waiting times between consecutive machines. Under either of the constraints the problem is unary NP-Complete for two machines. We prove some properties of the optimal schedule for n/2/F, no-idle/σCi. For n/m/P, no-idle/σCi, and n/m/P, no-wait/σCi, with an increasing or decreasing series of dominating machines, we prove theorems that are the basis for polynomial bounded algorithms. All theorems are demonstrated numerically.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling N jobs on M parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum earliness or tardiness cost incurred for each of the jobs. Earliness and tardiness costs are given by general (but job-independent) functions of the amount of time a job is completed prior to or after a common due date. We show that in problems with a nonrestrictive due date, the problem decomposes into two parts. Each of the M longest jobs is assigned to a different machine, and all other jobs are assigned to the machines so as to minimize their makespan. With these assignments, the individual scheduling problems for each of the machines are simple to solve. We demonstrate that several simple heuristics of low complexity, based on this characterization, are asymptotically optimal under mild probabilistic conditions. We develop attractive worst-case bounds for them. We also develop a simple closed-form lower bound for the minimum cost value. The bound is asymptotically accurate under the same probabilistic conditions. In the case where the due date is restrictive, the problem is more complex only in the sense that the set of initial jobs on the machines is not easily characterized. However, we extend our heuristics and lower bounds to this general case as well. Numerical studies exhibit that these heuristics perform excellently even for small- or moderate-size problems both in the restrictive and nonrestrictive due-date case. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Discrete‐time queues with D‐MAP arrival process are more useful in modeling and performance analysis of telecommunication networks based on the ATM environment. This paper analyzes a finite‐buffer discrete‐time queue with general bulk‐service rule, wherein the arrival process is D‐MAP and service times are arbitrarily and independently distributed. The distributions of buffer contents at various epochs (departure, random, and prearrival) have been obtained using imbedded Markov chain and supplementary variable methods. Finally, some performance measures such as loss probability and average delay are discussed. Numerical results are also presented in some cases. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article we present an algorithm for the minimum makespan preemptive open shop, which is superior to existing algorithms in both space and time requirements. We define the more complex generalized open shop and flexible open shop and address the minimum makespan problem on these shops. We show how we can use the algorithm for the minimum makespan open shop to achieve load balancing in simple and generalized open shops without increasing the complexity of the algorithm. Load balancing dictates that the number of busy machines in each period is as even as possible. We also consider preventive maintenance issues in the open shop, and makespan retains its minimum value. In particular we consider the scenario where a machine can be maintained during any period that it happens to be idle. Also we consider the case that a maintenance schedule is prespecified. We show that this problem can be solved via a linear programming formulation that can also take into account release times for the jobs and ready times for the machines. Faster algorithms are presented for open shops with three machines or less. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider server scheduling on parallel dedicated machines to minimize the makespan. Each job has a loading operation and a processing operation. The loading operation requires a server that serves all the jobs. Each machine has a given set of jobs to process, and the processing sequence is known and fixed. We design a polynomial‐time algorithm to solve the two‐machine case of the problem. When the number of machines is arbitrary, the problem becomes strongly NP‐hard even if all the jobs have the same processing length or all the loading operations require a unit time. We design two heuristic algorithms to treat the case where all the loading times are unit and analyze their performance.  相似文献

In interval scheduling, not only the processing times of the jobs but also their starting times are given. This article surveys the area of interval scheduling and presents proofs of results that have been known within the community for some time. We first review the complexity and approximability of different variants of interval scheduling problems. Next, we motivate the relevance of interval scheduling problems by providing an overview of applications that have appeared in literature. Finally, we focus on algorithmic results for two important variants of interval scheduling problems. In one variant we deal with nonidentical machines: instead of each machine being continuously available, there is a given interval for each machine in which it is available. In another variant, the machines are continuously available but they are ordered, and each job has a given “maximal” machine on which it can be processed. We investigate the complexity of these problems and describe algorithms for their solution. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2007  相似文献

Motivated by the flow of products in the iron and steel industry, we study an identical and parallel machine scheduling problem with batch deliveries, where jobs finished on the parallel machines are delivered to customers in batches. Each delivery batch has a capacity and incurs a cost. The objective is to find a coordinated production and delivery schedule that minimizes the total flow time of jobs plus the total delivery cost. This problem is an extension of the problem considered by Hall and Potts, Ann Oper Res 135 (2005) 41–64, who studied a two‐machine problem with an unbounded number of transporters and unbounded delivery capacity. We first provide a dynamic programming algorithm to solve a special case with a given job assignment to the machines. A heuristic algorithm is then presented for the general problem, and its worst‐case performance ratio is analyzed. The computational results show that the heuristic algorithm can generate near‐optimal solutions. Finally, we offer a fully polynomial‐time approximation scheme for a fixed number of machines. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 63: 492–502, 2016  相似文献

This paper obtains the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimates of two indices of performance of a system which alternates between two states “up” or “down” in accordance with a Markov process. The two indices are (1) operational readiness, which measures the probability that the system will be up when needed; and (2) operational reliability, which measures the probability that the system will be up during the entire time of need. For the purpose of obtaining these estimates, two types of observations are considered: (a) those which reveal only the state of system at isolated time-points, and (b) those which continuously record the duration of the “up” and “down” times of the system.  相似文献

Given a set of jobs, a processing time and a weight for each job, several parallel and identical machines, and a common due date that is not too early to constrain the scheduling decision, we want to find an optimal job schedule so as to minimize the maximum weighted absolute lateness. We show that this problem is NP-complete even for the single-machine case, and is strongly NP-complete for the general case. We present a polynomial time heuristic for this problem and analyze its worst-case performance. Empirical testing of the heuristic is reported, and the results suggest that the performance is asymptotically optimal as the number of jobs tends to infinity. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

If the processing time of each job in a flow shop also depends on the time spent prior to processing, then the choice of a sequence influences processing times. This nonstandard scheduling problem is studied here for the minimum makespan schedule in a flow shop with two machines. The problem is NP-hard in the strong sense and already contains the main features of the general case [10]. Restricting to the case of permutation schedules, we first determine the optimal release times of the jobs for a given sequence. Permutation schedules are evaluated for this optimal policy, and the scheduling problem is solved using branch-and-bound techniques. We also show the surprising result that the optimal schedule may not be a permutation schedule. Numerical results on randomly generated data are provided for permutation schedules. Our numerical results confirm our preliminary study [10] that fairly good approximate solutions can efficiently be obtained in the case of limited computing time using the heuristics due to Gilmore and Gomory [7]. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The majority of scheduling literature assumes that the machines are available at all times. In this paper, we study single machine scheduling problems where the machine maintenance must be performed within certain intervals and hence the machine is not available during the maintenance periods. We also assume that if a job is not processed to completion before the machine is stopped for maintenance, an additional setup is necessary when the processing is resumed. Our purpose is to schedule the maintenance and jobs to minimize some performance measures. The objective functions that we consider are minimizing the total weighted job completion times and minimizing the maximum lateness. In both cases, maintenance must be performed within a fixed period T, and the time for the maintenance is a decision variable. In this paper, we study two scenarios concerning the planning horizon. First, we show that, when the planning horizon is long in relation to T, the problem with either objective function is NP-complete, and we present pseudopolynomial time dynamic programming algorithms for both objective functions. In the second scenario, the planning horizon is short in relation to T. However, part of the period T may have elapsed before we schedule any jobs in this planning horizon, and the remaining time before the maintenance is shorter than the current planning horizon. Hence we must schedule one maintenance in this planning horizon. We show that the problem of minimizing the total weighted completion times in this scenario is NP-complete, while the shortest processing time (SPT) rule and the earliest due date (EDD) rule are optimal for the total completion time problem and the maximum lateness problem respectively. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper considers the problem of scheduling a given number of jobs on a specified number of machines in a flowshop where the objective function is to minimize the total throughput time in which all jobs complete processing on all machines. Based on the combinatorial analysis of the problem, several simple algorithms are developed for solving special structure flowshop scheduling problems where the process times are not completely random, but bear a well-defined relationship to one another. The proposed algorithms are both simple and computationally efficient and can optimally solve large-sized problems even with manual computational devices.  相似文献
