The mixed ordering policy in periodic review stochastic multi-commodity inventory systems

In multi-commodity inventory systems with variable setup costs, the mixed ordering policy assumes that commodities may be ordered either individually, or may be arbitrarily grouped for joint ordering. Thus, for a two-commodity system, commodity one or commodity two or commodities one and two may be ordered incurring respectively fixed order costs of K, K₁, or K₂, where max (K₁, K₂) ≤ K ≤ K₁ + K₂, This paper considers a two-commodity periodic review system. The stationary characteristics of the system are analyzed, and, for a special case, explicit solutions are obtained for the distribution of the stock levels at the beginning of the periods. In a numerical example, optimal policy variables are computed, and the mixed ordering policy is compared with individual and joint ordering policies.     

Parametric analysis of linear programs with upper bounded variables

Linear programming problems with upper bounded variables can be solved by regular simplex method by considering upper bounding constraints as explicit constraints of the problem. However, more efficient methods exist which consider these upper bound constraints implicitly. When parametric analysis for problems with upper bounds is to be carried out, one can use the regular parameter analysis by considering the upper bound constraints explicitly. This paper develops formulas for parametric analysis where upper bound constraints are used implicitly, thus reducing the size of the basic matrix.     

Constructing bimatrix games with special properties

This work is concerned primarily with presenting techniques for constructing bimatrix games with predetermined equilibrium points. Some partial results on Nash-solvability are also given.     

Comparable deterrence – target,criteria and purpose

The last decade has seen several advances in the study of deterrence. These advances have sparked some strong disagreements regarding interpretation of the models and what their contributions signify. This paper appraises the discussions from a model theoretic perspective. It is argued that when comparing rivalling models three aspects; (i) target, (ii) criteria and (iii) type of purpose should be taken into account in order to make a proper appraisal. Informed by these aspects it is evident that the three deterrence models analysed address different aspects, in different ways and to different ends. From this perspective, the so-called Perfect Deterrence model must be recognised as a clear advancement in the research field. Model comparison will always be context relative and a plurality of models should be viewed favourably.     

Flintlock brass fittings from the 19th-century Akko 1 shipwreck,Israel

The Akko 1 shipwreck is the remains of a 26-metre-long Egyptian armed vessel or auxiliary naval brig built at the beginning of the 19th century. Remains of six flintlock muskets were retrieved from the shipwreck, and characterised by various metallurgical methods. The research aimed to study the composition and microstructure of the musket fittings and their manufacturing processes, and if possible, to determine the date and origin of the raw materials. The lead isotope analysis of the fittings suggests that their raw material originated in Great Britain. Based on their typology and composition, the fittings were made in Great Britain of brass alloy and manufactured by casting, probably at the same workshop; and the staple was manufactured by casting and drawing. Considering the zinc content, combined with the manufacturing techniques, the fittings were manufactured between the latter part of the 18th and the early 19th centuries, which might indicate that they were purchased in the course of 19th century weapons trade to be used on board the Egyptian ship.     

Satellite constellation design for forest fire monitoring via a stochastic programing approach

There is significant value in the data collected by satellites during and after a natural disaster. The current operating paradigm in practice is for satellites to passively collect data when they happen to fly over a disaster location. Conversely, this article considers the alternative approach of actively maneuvering satellites to fly directly overhead of the disaster site on a routine basis. Toward this end, we seek to compute a satellite constellation design that minimizes the expected maneuver costs for monitoring an unknown forest fire. In this article, we present a 2‐stage stochastic programing model for this problem as well as a accelerated L‐shaped decomposition approach. A comparison between our approach and the current operating paradigm indicates that our solution provides longer duration data collections and a greater number of data collections. Analysis also shows that our proposed solution is robust over a wide array of scenarios.     

The Taliban’s Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (1996–2001): ‘War-Making and State-Making’ as an Insurgency Strategy

This paper examines the institutional and functional aspects of the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA). The Taliban’s coercive approach and its entire reliance on “war-making” to “state-making” shows the difficulty of the transformation of an insurgent group into a state structure. The Taliban was primarily capable of establishing a two-track system of governance. However, the assessment of the IEA’s institutional and functional capabilities shows that the military–political organization formed by the Taliban lacked statehood in all three areas of legitimacy, authority and capacity.
