The combination of uncertain demand and lead times for installing capacity creates the risk of shortage during the lead time, which may have serious consequences for a service provider. This paper analyzes a model of capacity expansion with autocorrelated random demand and a fixed lead time for adding capacity. To provide a specified level of service, a discrete time expansion timing policy uses a forecast error‐adjusted minimum threshold level of excess capacity position to trigger an expansion. Under this timing policy, the expansion cost can be minimized by solving a deterministic dynamic program. We study the effects of demand characteristics and the lead time length on the capacity threshold. Autocorrelation acts similarly to randomness in hastening expansions but has a smaller impact, especially when lead times are short. We compare several competing estimates of the availability of a system which alternates between two states, “up” and “down,” in accordance with an alternating renewal process. Both interval and point estimators are compared under several special but representative situations. The comparison reaffirms the validity and robustness of the log-logistic jackknifed estimates. However, when the point estimates are compared from the intrinsic criterion of probability of concentration, the uniformly minimum variance estimate obtained for the Markov model performs very well. 相似文献

Identifying and ranking a most preferred subset of alternatives in the presence of multiple criteria

In this article an interactive method is developed to identify and rank a most preferred subset, T, of alternatives assuming that the decision maker has an implicit quasiconcave nondecreasing utility function. The method requires the decision maker to compare pairs of selected alternatives. Based on the responses of the decision maker, convex cones are constructed to eliminate alternatives that are proved to be inferior to alternatives in set T. The method aims at keeping the number of pairwise comparisons small. Computational experience with the method indicates that the required number of pairwise comparisons to form set T is usually small. However, the number of pairwise comparisons needed to confirm that this set is best may be large. 相似文献

Boland, Proschan, and Tong [2] used the notion of criticality of nodes in a coherent system to study the optimal component arrangement of reliability structures. They also provided a sufficient minimal cut (path) based criterion for verifying the criticality ordering of two nodes. We develop a necessary and sufficient condition for two nodes to be comparable and provide specific examples illustrating our result's applicability. A stochastic optimization model for capacity expansion for a service industry that incorporates uncertainty in future demand is developed. Based on a weighted set of possible demand scenarios, the model generates a recommended schedule of capacity expressions, and calculates the resulting sales under each scenario. The capacity schedule specifies the size, location, and timing of these expansions that will maximize the company's expected profit. The model includes a budget constraint on available resources. By using Lagrangian relaxation and exploiting the special nested knapsack structure in the sub-problems, an algorithm was developed for its solution. A system of two parallel queues where the arrivals from a single stream of customers join the shorter queue is considered. Arrivals form a homogeneous Poisson stream and the service times in each of the two queues are independent exponential variates. By treating one of the queues as bounded, the steady-state probability vector for the system can be expressed in a modified matrix-geometric form and can be computed efficiently. Computational procedures for the sojourn time distribution and characteristics of the departure stream are developed. Some numerical results are presented, and based on these results an efficient approximation scheme for the model is developed which can be readily extended to systems with more than two parallel queues. 相似文献

We formulate the set partitioning problem as a matching problem with simple side constraints. As a result we obtain a Lagrangian relaxation of the set partitioning problem in which the primal problem is a matching problem. To solve the Lagrangian dual we must solve a sequence of matching problems each with different edge-weights. We use the cyclic coordinate method to iterate the multipliers, which implies that successive matching problems differ in only two edge-weights. This enables us to use sensitivity analysis to modify one optimal matching to obtain the next one. We give theoretical and empirical comparisons of these dual bounds with the conventional linear programming ones. 相似文献

Rendezvous search finds the strategies that players should use in order to find one another when they are separated in a region. Previous papers have concentrated on the case where there are two players searching for one another. This paper looks at the problem when there are more than two players and concentrates on what they should do if some but not all of them meet together. It looks at two strategies—the stick together one and the split up and meet again one. This paper shows that the former is optimal among the class of strategies which require no memory and are stationary, and it gives a method of calculating the expected rendezvous time under it. However, simulation results comparing both strategies suggest that in most situations the split up and meet again strategy which requires some memory leads to faster expected rendezvous times. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
