We discuss the problem of scheduling several jobs on a single machine with the objective of minimizing the weighted mean absolute deviation of flow times around the weighted mean flow time. We first show that the optimal schedule is W-shaped. For the unweighted case, we show that all optimal schedules are V-shaped. This characterization enables us to show that the problem is NP-hard. We then provide a pseudopolynomial algorithm for the unweighted problem. We consider a single-machine scheduling problem in which all jobs have the same due date and penalties are assessed for both early and late completion of jobs. However, earliness and tardiness are penalized at different rates. The scheduling objective is to minimize either the weighted sum of absolute deviations (WSAD) or the weighted sum of squared deviations (WSSD). For each objective we consider two versions of the problem. In the unconstrained version an increase in the due date does not yield any further decrease in the objective function. We present a constructive algorithm for the unconstrained WSAD problem and show that this problem is equivalent to the two-parallel, nonidentical machine, mean flow-time problem. For the unconstrained WSSD and the constrained WSAD and WSSD problems we propose implicit enumeration procedures based on several dominance conditions. Building evacuation problems can be represented as dynamic network-flow problems [3]. The underlying network structure of a building evolves through time yielding a time-expanded network (a dynamic network). Usually in such evacuation problems involving time, more than one objective function is appropriate. For example, minimizing the total evacuation time and evacuating a portion of the building as early as possible are two such objectives. In this article we show that lexicographical optimization is applicable in handling such multiple objectives. Minimizing the total evacuation time while avoiding cyclic movements in a building and “priority evacuation” are treated as lexicographical min cost flow problems. 相似文献

We solve the problem of optimal allocation of weapons to targets in the presence of layered regional defenses. The general solution technique is an integer program transformable to a minimum-cost network flow. This model assumes the defense has perfect weapons. Results of a small sample scenario are included. Additionally, a representative attrition algorithm is described and the two models combined to form a hybrid algorithm. The G/G/R machine repair problem with M operating machines, S warm standby spares, and R repairmen is studied as a diffusion process. The steady-state equations are formulated as diffusion equations subject to two reflecting barriers. The approximate diffusion parameters of the diffusion equations are obtained (1) under the assumption that the input characteristics of the problem are defined only by their first two moments rather than their probability distribution function, (2) under the assumption of heavy traffic approximation, that is, when queues of failed machines in the repair stage are almost always nonempty, and (3) using well-known asymptotic results from renewal theory. Expressions for the probability density functions of the number of failed machines in the system are obtained. A study of the derived approximate results, compared to some of the exact results, suggests that the diffusion approach provides a useful method for solving complex machine-repair problems. 相似文献

In clinical circles, the concept of “moral injury” has rapidly gained traction. Yet, from a moral philosophical point of view the concept is less clear than is suggested. That is, in current conceptualizations of moral injury, trauma’s moral dimension seems to be understood in a rather mechanistic and individualized manner. This article makes a start in developing an adequately founded conceptualization of the role of morality in deployment-related distress. It does so by reviewing and synthesizing insights from different disciplines into morality and trauma. This discussion will lead to three positions: (1) values and norms are by definition characterized by conflict, (2) moral conflict may entail important social dimensions, and (3) moral conflict may lead to altered beliefs about previously held values. These insights provide important steps in further developing conceptions of the role of morality in deployment-related suffering. 相似文献

A carrier battle group is operating in an area where it is subject to attack by enemy aircraft. It is anticipated that air raids will occur in large waves. The uncertain time between raids is available for the replenishment of supplies. We consider the problem of how best to schedule ammunition replenishment during this period. The theory of Gittins indices provides the technical background to the development of a range of models which yield a hierarchy of index-based heuristics for replenishment.
