Combining standardized time series area and Cramér–von Mises variance estimators

We propose three related estimators for the variance parameter arising from a steady‐state simulation process. All are based on combinations of standardized‐time‐series area and Cramér–von Mises (CvM) estimators. The first is a straightforward linear combination of the area and CvM estimators; the second resembles a Durbin–Watson statistic; and the third is related to a jackknifed version of the first. The main derivations yield analytical expressions for the bias and variance of the new estimators. These results show that the new estimators often perform better than the pure area, pure CvM, and benchmark nonoverlapping and overlapping batch means estimators, especially in terms of variance and mean squared error. Testing goodness of fit to the increasing failure rate family

One branch of the reliability literature is concerned with devising statistical procedures with various nonparametric “restricted family” model assumptions because of the potential improved operating characteristics of such procedures over totally nonparametric ones. In the single-sample problem with unknown increasing failure rate (IFR) distribution F, (1) maximum-likelihood estimators of F have been calculated, (2) upper or lower tolerance limits for F have been determined, and (3) tests of the null hypothesis that F is exponential have been constructed. Barlow and Campo proposed graphical methods for assessing goodness of fit to the IFR model when the validity of this assumption is unknown. This article proposes several analytic tests of the IFR null hypothesis based on the maximum distance and area between the cumulative hazard function and its greatest convex minorant (GCM), and the maximum distance and area between the total time on test statistic and its GCM. A table of critical points is provided to implement a specific test having good overall power properties.     

The two-on-one stochastic duel

The one-on-one stochastic duel is extended to the general two-on-one duel for the first time. The state equations, win probabilities, mean value, and variance functions are derived. The case where one side has Erlang (2) firing times and the other is negative exponential is compared with the corresponding “Stochastic Lanchester” and Lanchester models to demonstrate their nonequivalence.     

An efficient heuristic for large set covering problems

A heuristic solution procedure for set covering is presented that works well for large, relatively dense problems. In addition, a confidence interval is established about the unknown global optimum. Results are presented for 30 large randomly generated problems.     

A new analysis of a lot-size model with partial backlogging

We reformulate the cost equation for the lot-size model with partial back-logging. The formulation is in terms of “fictitious demand rate,” a new inventory decision variable that simplifies the analysis. Using decomposition by projection, we obtain an optimal solution in a straightforward manner. The form of the solution sheds additional light on the behavior of the model. Some of these insights are elucidated by numerical examples.     

Damage calculations for unreliable warheads

For large numbers of perfectly reliable, optimally targeted warheads the square-root law approximates the expected fraction damage achieved on an area target. In this paper a more exact expression is derived for this damage fraction which Holds for all numbers of warheads. This expression is shown to converge to the square-root law when a large number of warheads are fired. The more exact expression is used in a procedure to calculate expected damage when warheads are unreliable, and this procedure is shown to be superior to a modified square-root approximation which has been used previously.     

A note on eoq under fund constraints

An algorithm is developed to modify the Wilson Q to account for a short-term expenditure constraint over a catalog of items. Representative results are shown and generalizations made.
