This article is a theoretic study of the following problem in verification: Mobile units under control of an agent, whom we call the HIDER, travel on a known transportation network and must at the conclusion of their itinerary report locations at fixed time intervals to a monitoring authority, whom we call the SEEKER. The purpose of this reporting requirement is to verify that illegal units do not infiltrate the network from sources under the control of the HIDER. We assume that the SEEKER has an independent intelligence-gathering capability which gives sightings of both legal and illegal units. The purpose of this article is to quantify the advantage of frequent over infrequent reporting. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this article, a quality-control design framework that employs information for the supplier-buyer system is modeled. Significant operational savings may be obtained by using the integrated plans developed under this framework. This is especially true when the cost of a defective is high, and the variable sampling and rework costs are low. Analysis of the interaction of defective, rework, and variable sampling costs reveals that the savings are the result of a shift of control effort from the process-control to the lot-acceptance stage, which is the consequence of tradeoffs involving both stages. The managerial impact of adopting integrated plans is discussed.  相似文献

Empirical distance functions are used to estimate actual travel distances in a transportation network, to verify the accuracy of road mileage data, and to formulate continuous location models. In this article we consider the problem of fitting the weighted lp norm to a given network. Mathematical properties are derived for two fitting criteria found in the literature. These properties are used to develop an accurate and efficient methodology to solve for the best-fitting parameter values. The directional bias of the lp norm is analyzed for its effect on the range of search for the optimal p value. Concepts and methodology are applied to a case study of the road system in Southern Ontario. In conclusion, a general framework for other types of distance functions is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The article considers a two-person zero-sum game in which a searcher with b bombs wishes to destroy a mobile hider. The players are restricted to move on a straight line with maximum speeds v and u satisfying v > u > 0; neither player can see the other but each knows the other's initial position. The bombs all have destructive radius R and there is a time lag T between the release of a bomb and the bomb exploding. The searcher gets 1 unit if the hider is destroyed and 0 if he survives. A solution is given for b = 1, and extended to b > 1 when the time lag is small. Various applications of the game are discussed.  相似文献

A procedure for obtaining a facilities scatter diagram within a rectangular boundary is developed using a multifacility location model. This method gives favorable computational results and has the advantage over other scatter diagram methods of being able to accommodate fixed facility locations. Examples illustrate how this method can be used by a designer/analyst either as a one-step algorithm or iteratively to build a layout.  相似文献

Studied here is the problem of evaluating the formation of coalitions in cooperative games by considering its internal and external effects. Our analysis is based upon a formal theory of the quotient game and the use of multilinear extensions to compute the Shapley value and the coalitional value. We examine the problem of scheduling n jobs with a common due date on a single machine. The processing time of each job is a random variable, which follows an arbitrary distribution with a known mean and a known variance. The machine is not reliable; it is subject to stochastic breakdowns. The objective is to minimize the expected sum of squared deviations of job completion times from the due date. Two versions of the problem are addressed. In the first one the due date is a given constant, whereas in the second one the due date is a decision variable. In each case, a general form of the deterministic equivalent of the stochastic scheduling problem is obtained when the counting process related to the machine uptime distribution is a generalized Poisson process. A sufficient condition is derived under which optimal sequences are V-shaped with respect to mean processing times. Other characterizations of optimal solutions are also established. Based on the optimality properties, algorithms with pseudopolynomial time complexity are proposed to solve both versions of the problem. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Practitioners of maintenance scheduling sometimes use a simple analytic formula, derived based on inspection scheduling, as a heuristic to determine the length of the preventive maintenance period. The sensitivity of this heuristic solution is analyzed and the cost penalties are calculated compared to the exact solution that utilizes the lifetime distribution in the derivation of the optimal preventive maintenance period. A simple extension of the heuristic is suggested to improve the approximation with a slightly increased computational effort. We reformulate a multiperiod capacity expansion model of electric utilities as a network model. We show how to reconstruct the dual solution of the original mathematical program from the network model solution. To formulate the network model, we use information about the properties of the optimal solution of the mathematical program to reduce the number of constraints. With the recent trend toward just-in-time deliveries and reduction of inventories, many firms are reexamining their inventory and logistics policies. Some firms have dramatically altered their inventory, production, and shipping policies with the goal of reducing costs and improving service. Part of this restructuring may involve a specific contract with a trucking company, or it may entail establishing in-house shipping capabilities. This restructuring, however, raises new questions regarding the choice of optimal trucking capacity, shipping frequency, and inventory levels. In this study, we examine a two-level distribution system composed of a warehouse and a retailer. We assume that demand at the retailer is random. Since the warehouse has no advance notice of the size of the retailer order, inventory must be held there as well as at the retailer. We examine inventory policies at both the warehouse and the retailer, and we explicitly consider the trucking capacity, and the frequency of deliveries from the warehouse to the retailer. Both linear and concave fixed transportation costs are examined. We find the optimal base stock policies at both locations, the optimal in-house or contracted regular truck capacity, and the optimal review period (or, equivalently, delivery frequency). For the case of normally distributed demand we provide analytical results and numerical examples that yield insight into systems of this type. Some of our results are counterintuitive. For instance, we find some cases in which the optimal truck capacity decreases as the variability of demand increases.
