This is the first of a sequence of papers dealing with the computational aspects of the transient behavior of queues in discrete time It is shown that for a substantial class of queues of practical interest, a wealth of numerical information may be obtained by relatively unsophisticated methods This approach should prove useful in the analysis of unstable queues which operate over a limited time interval, but is by no means limited to such queues Mathematically the service unit is modeled in terms of a multivariate Markov chain, whose particular structure is used in iterative computation. Discussed in this article are tests for the extreme-value distribution, or, equivalently, for the two-parameter Weibull distribution when parameters are unknown and the sample may be censored. The three tests investigated are based on the median, the mean, and the Anderson-Darling A2 statistic calculated from a set zi of values derived from the spacings of the sample. The median and the mean have previously been discussed by Mann, Scheuer, and Fertig [10] and by Tiku and Singh [14]. Asymptotic distributions and points are given for the test statistics, based on recently developed theory, and power studies are conducted to compare them with each other and with two other statistics suitable for the test. Of the normalized spacings tests, A2 is recommended overall; the mean also gives good power in many situations, but can be nonconsistent.  相似文献

This article considers a particular printed circuit board (PCB) assembly system employing surface mount technology. Multiple, identical automatic placement machines, a variety of board types, and a large number of component types characterize the environment studied. The problem addressed is that of minimizing the makespan for assembling a batch of boards with a secondary objective of reducing the mean flow time. The approach adopted is that of grouping boards into production families, allocating component types to placement machines for each family, dividing of families into board groups with similar processing times, and the scheduling of groups. A complete setup is incurred only when changing over between board families. For the environment studied, precedence constraints on the order of component placement do not exist, and placement times are independent of feeder location. Heuristic solution procedures are proposed to create board subfamilies (groups) for which the component mounting times are nearly identical within a subfamily. Assignment of the same component type to multiple machines is avoided. The procedures use results from the theory of open-shop scheduling and parallel processor scheduling to sequence boards on machines. Note that we do not impose an open-shop environment but rather model the problem in the context of an open shop, because the order of component mountings is immaterial. Three procedures are proposed for allocating components to machines and subsequently scheduling boards on the machines. The first two procedures assign components to machines to balance total work load. For scheduling purposes, the first method groups boards into subfamilies to adhere to the assumptions of the open-shop model, and the second procedure assumes that each board is a subfamily and these are scheduled in order of shortest total processing time. The third procedure starts by forming board subfamilies based on total component similarity and then assigns components to validate the open-shop model. We compare the performance of the three procedures using estimated daily, two-day, and weekly production requirements by averaging quarterly production data for an actual cell consisting of five decoupled machines. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

An analysis of US assessments of Germany's development of armored warfare illustrates the problems that intelligence agencies face as they attempt to understand military innovation. The covert nature of German Army's tank research in the years immediately following World War I limited the number of indicators of Berlin's interest in armored warfare. Similarly, the United States possessed at best a fragmentary picture of German experimentation with armor. By the outbreak of World War II, however, US military attaches had nonetheless developed an accurate understanding of German concepts of armored warfare. If the United States is to avoid strategic surprise in the future, it must cultivate intelligence sources and employ considerably different methods from those of the Cold War.  相似文献

The empirical international conflict literature has given much recent attention to interstate armed force’s impact on human well-being. While empirical research has advanced our understanding of the phenomenon considerably, we argue that one conclusion that many studies have reached is preliminary. Some recent research contends that only full-scale war, and not force short of war, has a discernable impact on human welfare or physical quality of life (PQOL). We develop theory on one type of force short of war, large-scale foreign military intervention (FMI), and its potential effects on PQOL. Using interrupted time series and panel corrected standard error methodologies, we find that from 1960 to 2005 large-scale FMI had a statistically and substantively significant impact on the PQOL of populations in 106 developing countries. The specific effect that this type of armed force has depended in large part on the regime type of the target country.  相似文献

In this paper, a branch-and-bound procedure is presented for treating the general knapsack problem. The fundamental notion of the procedure involves a variation of traditional branching strategies as well as the incorporation of penalties in order to improve bounds. Substantial computational experience has been obtained, the results of which would indicate the feasibility of the procedure for problems of large size.  相似文献
