In this paper, the existence of a saddle point for two-person zero-sum infinite games of a special type is proved. The games have continuous bilinear payoff functions and strategy sets which are convex, noncompact subsets of an infinite-dimensional vector space. The closures of the strategy sets are, however, compact. The payoff functions satisfy conditions which allow the use of dominance arguments to show that points in the closure of a strategy set are dominated by or are strategically equivalent to points in the strategy set itself. Combining the dominance arguments with a well-known existence theorem produces the main result of the paper. The class of games treated is an extension of a class studied by J. D. Matheson, who obtained explicit solutions for the saddle points by using necessary conditions.  相似文献

Recent research has led to several surrogate multiplier search procedures for use in a primal branch-and-bound procedure. As single constrained integer programming problems, the surrogate subproblems are also solved via branch-and-bound. This paper develops the inner play between the surrogate subproblem and the primal branch-and-bound trees which can be exploited to produce a number of computational efficiencies. Most important is a restarting procedure which precludes the need to solve numerous surrogate subproblems at each node of a primal branch-and-bound tree. Empirical evidence suggests that this procedure greatly reduces total computation time.  相似文献

An important class of network flow problems is that class for which the objective is to minimize the cost of the most expensive unit of flow while obtaining a desired total flow through the network. Two special cases of this problem have been solved, namely, the bottleneck assignment problem and time-minimizing transportation problem. This paper addresses the more general case which we shall refer to as the time-minimizing network flow problem. Associated with each arc is an arc capacity (static) and a transferral time. The objective is to find a maximal flow for which the length (in time) of the longest path carrying flow is minimized. The character of the problem is discussed and a solution algorithm is presented.  相似文献

This article examines the short run total costs and long run average costs of products under warranty. Formulae for both consumer cost under warranty and producer profit are derived. The results in the case of the pro rata warranty correct a mistake appearing in Blischke and Scheuer [5]. We also show that expected average cost to both the producer and the consumer of a product under warranty depends on both the mean of the product lifetime distribution and on its failure rate.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a simple three-order-statistic asymptotically unbiased estimator of the Weibull shape parameter c for the case in which all three parameters are unknown. Optimal quantiles that minimize the asymptotic variance of this estimator, c? are determined and shown to depend only on the true (unknown) shape parameter value c and in a rather insensitive way. Monte Carlo studies further verified that, in practice where the true shape parameter c is unknown, using always c? with the optimal quantities that correspond to c = 2.0 produces estimates, c?, remarkably close to the theoretical optimal. A second stage estimation procedure, namely recalculating c? based on the optimal quantiles corresponding to c?, was not worth the additional effort. Benchmark simulation comparisons were also made with the best percentile estimator of Zanakis [20] and with a new estimator of Wyckoff, Bain and Engelhardt [18], one that appears to be the best of proposed closed-form estimators but uses all sample observations. The proposed estimator, c?, should be of interest to practitioners having limited resources and to researchers as a starting point for more accurate iterative estimation procedures. Its form is independent of all three Weibull parameters and, for not too large sample sizes, it requires the first, last and only one other (early) ordered observation. Practical guidelines are provided for choosing the best anticipated estimator of shape for a three-parameter Weibull distribution under different circumstances.  相似文献

Periodic mass screening is the scheduled application of a test to all members of a population to provide early detection of a randomly occurring defect or disease. This paper considers periodic mass screening with particular reference to the imperfect capacity of the test to detect an existing defect and the associated problem of selecting the kind of test to use. Alternative kinds of tests differ with respect to their reliability characteristics and their cost per application. Two kinds of imperfect test reliability are considered. In the first case, the probability that the test will detect an existing defect is constant over all values of elapsed time since the incidence of the defect. In the second case, the test will detect the defect if, and only if, the lapsed time since incidence exceeds a critical threshold T which characterizes the test. The cost of delayed detection is an arbitrary increasing function (the “disutility function”) of the duration of the delay. Expressions for the long-run expected disutility per unit time are derived for the above two cases along with results concerning the best choice of type of test (where the decision rules make reference to characteristics of the disutility function).  相似文献

The dynamic transportation problem is a transportation problem over time. That is, a problem of selecting at each instant of time t, the optimal flow of commodities from various sources to various sinks in a given network so as to minimize the total cost of transportation subject to some supply and demand constraints. While the earliest formulation of the problem dates back to 1958 as a problem of finding the maximal flow through a dynamic network in a given time, the problem has received wider attention only in the last ten years. During these years, the problem has been tackled by network techniques, linear programming, dynamic programming, combinational methods, nonlinear programming and finally, the optimal control theory. This paper is an up-to-date survey of the various analyses of the problem along with a critical discussion, comparison, and extensions of various formulations and techniques used. The survey concludes with a number of important suggestions for future work.  相似文献
