Revenue management: A real options approach

Revenue management is the process of actively managing inventory or capacity to maximize revenues. The active management typically occurs through managerial levers such as price, promotion, or availability. We present a novel real options approach to revenue management that is specifically suited to the car rental business. We illustrate the concept with actual car rental data. The model produces minimally acceptable prices and inventory release quantities (number of cars available for rent at a given price) as a function of remaining time and available inventory. The pricing and inventory release recommendations of the developed model confirm earlier empirical analysis that suggested current practises discount too deeply early in the booking cycle. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numerical simulation of warhead transportation

The new numerical approach for analysis of the warhead transportations is suggested.This approach allows to control the warhead operability before its experimental analysis.The approach is implemented by the adequate models for the software ANSYS.Analysis of the loads at land operations and trans-portations of the warhead by natural roads,water and aviation allows to obtain the maximal values of loads,which are used in numerical simulations of the warhead.These loads give an opportunity to analyze the operability and the fatigue strength of the cartridge warhead.The numerical simulations of the attachments of the warhead combat elements are performed on the basis of the suggested method.The data of the numerical simulations verifies the operability of the fastener system of the warhead combat elements.     

Graph distance‐dependent labeling related to code assignment in computer networks

For nonnegative integers d₁, d₂, and L(d₁, d₂)‐labeling of a graph G, is a function f : V(G) → {0, 1, 2, …} such that |f(u) − f(v)| ≥ d_i whenever the distance between u and v is i in G, for i = 1, 2. The L(d₁, d₂)‐number of G, λ(G) is the smallest k such that there exists an L(d₁, d₂)‐labeling with the largest label k. These labelings have an application to a computer code assignment problem. The task is to assign integer “control codes” to a network of computer stations with distance restrictions, which allow d₁ ≤ d₂. Optimal control for multi-servers queueing systems under periodic review

This paper deals with the problem of finding the optimal dynamic operating policy for an M/M/S queue. The system is observed periodically, and at the beginning of each period the system controller selects the number of service units to be kept open during that period. The optimality criterion used is the total discounted cost over a finite horizon.     

Two-characteristic markov-type manpower flow models

A two-dimensional state space Markov Model of a Manpower System with special structure is analyzed. Examples are given from the military services. The probabilistic properties are discussed in detail with emphasis on computation. The basic equations of manpower stocks and flows are analyzed.     

On multipopulation queuing systems with first-come first-served discipline

Steady-state probabilities for a multipopulation single channel multiserver queuing system with first-come first-served queue discipline are established. Special cases lead to simplified formulas which sometimes can be evaluated using existing statistical and/or queuing tables. Optimization aspects are considered involving control of service rates. Several applications are presented.     

Scheduling data transmission under an {si; o} policy

This paper discusses scheduling of data transmission when data can only be transmitted in one direction at a time. A common policy used is the so-called alternating priority policy. In this paper we select a more general class of policies named the {S_i; O} policy. We show how to determine the optimal parameters of the {S_i; O} policy for given system parameters. We also give a simple example to show that {S_i; O} policy is, in fact, better then alternating priority policy.     

A new method to solve steady state queueing equations

There are a great number of queueing systems, including the M^X/M^Y/c, the Gl^X/M/c and the discrete Gl/G/1 queue in which the state probabilities are determined by repeated queue equations. This paper gives a simple, efficient and numerically stable algorithm to caiculate the state probabilities and measure of performance for such systems. The method avoids both complex arithmetric and matrix manipulations.
