Many organizations providing service support for products or families of products must allocate inventory investment among the parts (or, identically, items) that make up those products or families. The allocation decision is crucial in today's competitive environment in which rapid response and low levels of inventory are both required for providing competitive levels of customer service in marketing a firm's products. This is particularly important in high-tech industries, such as computers, military equipment, and consumer appliances. Such rapid response typically implies regional and local distribution points for final products and for spare parts for repairs. In this article we fix attention on a given product or product family at a single location. This single-location problem is the basic building block of multi-echelon inventory systems based on level-by-level decomposition, and our modeling approach is developed with this application in mind. The product consists of field-replaceable units (i.e., parts), which are to be stocked as spares for field service repair. We assume that each part will be stocked at each location according to an (s, S) stocking policy. Moreover, we distinguish two classes of demand at each location: customer (or emergency) demand and normal replenishment demand from lower levels in the multiechelon system. The basic problem of interest is to determine the appropriate policies (si Si) for each part i in the product under consideration. We formulate an approximate cost function and service level constraint, and we present a greedy heuristic algorithm for solving the resulting approximate constrained optimization problem. We present experimental results showing that the heuristics developed have good cost performance relative to optimal. We also discuss extensions to the multiproduct component commonality problem.  相似文献

We present a shifting bottleneck heuristic for minimizing the total weighted tardiness in a job shop. The method decomposes the job shop into a number of single‐machine subproblems that are solved one after another. Each machine is scheduled according to the solution of its corresponding subproblem. The order in which the single machine subproblems are solved has a significant impact on the quality of the overall solution and on the time required to obtain this solution. We therefore test a number of different orders for solving the subproblems. Computational results on 66 instances with ten jobs and ten machines show that our heuristic yields solutions that are close to optimal, and it clearly outperforms a well‐known dispatching rule enhanced with backtracking mechanisms. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper examines the discrete equal‐capacity p‐median problem that seeks to locate p new facilities (medians) on a network, each having a given uniform capacity, in order to minimize the sum of distribution costs while satisfying the demand on the network. Such problems arise, for example, in local access and transport area telecommunication network design problems where any number of a set of p facility units can be constructed at the specified candidate sites (hence, the net capacity is an integer multiple of a given unit capacity). We develop various valid inequalities, a separation routine for generating cutting planes that are specific members of such inequalities, as well as an enhanced reformulation that constructs a partial convex hull representation that subsumes an entire class of valid inequalities via its linear programming relaxation. We also propose suitable heuristic schemes for this problem, based on sequentially rounding the continuous relaxation solutions obtained for the various equivalent formulations of the problem. Extensive computational results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed valid inequalities, enhanced formulations, and heuristic schemes. The results indicate that the proposed schemes for tightening the underlying relaxations play a significant role in enhancing the performance of both exact and heuristic solution methods for this class of problems. © 2000 John & Sons, Inc. In hinterland container transportation the use of barges is getting more and more important. We propose a real‐life operational planning problem model from an inland terminal operating company, in which the number of containers shipped per barge is maximized and the number of terminals visited per barge is minimized. This problem is solved with an integer linear program (ILP), yielding strong cost reductions, about 20%, compared to the method used currently in practice. Besides, we develop a heuristic that solves the ILP in two stages. First, it decides for each barge which terminals to visit and second it assigns containers to the barges. This heuristic produces almost always optimal solutions and otherwise near‐optimal solutions. Moreover, the heuristic runs much faster than the ILP, especially for large‐sized instances.  相似文献

This article investigates optimal static prices for a finite capacity queueing system serving customers from different classes. We first show that the original multi‐class formulation in which the price for each class is a decision variable can be reformulated as a single dimensional problem with the total load as the decision variable. Using this alternative formulation, we prove an upper bound for the optimal arrival rates for a fairly large class of queueing systems and provide sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of a unique optimal arrival rate vector. We show that these conditions hold for M/M/1/m and M/G/s/s systems and prove structural results on the relationships between the optimal arrival rates and system capacity. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for measuring the efficiency of peer decision making units (DMUs). This tool has been utilized by a number of authors to examine two‐stage processes, where all the outputs from the first stage are the only inputs to the second stage. The current article examines and extends these models using game theory concepts. The resulting models are linear, and imply an efficiency decomposition where the overall efficiency of the two‐stage process is a product of the efficiencies of the two individual stages. When there is only one intermediate measure connecting the two stages, both the noncooperative and centralized models yield the same results as applying the standard DEA model to the two stages separately. As a result, the efficiency decomposition is unique. While the noncooperative approach yields a unique efficiency decomposition under multiple intermediate measures, the centralized approach is likely to yield multiple decompositions. Models are developed to test whether the efficiency decomposition arising from the centralized approach is unique. The relations among the noncooperative, centralized, and standard DEA approaches are investigated. In most of the stochastic resource-allocation problems discussed in the literature it is supposed that the key resource, herein called the machine, is continuously available until all tasks are completed. Plainly, this will often be an unrealistic assumption. This paper supposes that intermittent availability of the machine is due to a breakdown proces, and describes various approaches to the evaluation of the effect of breakdowns. Firstly, for the case of geometric up times, conditions are given under which breakdowns have no effect on optimal allocation strategies. Secondly, two different procedures are given which yield an upper bound on the loss incurred when a processing strategy is adopted under the assumption of no breakdowns, when in fact breakdowns do occur. The first of these is based on Gittins's indices and is described for the case of geometric up times, and the second uses a bounding argument on the breakdown process.  相似文献

Consider a closed network of queues of the “product-form” type, where each station has s servers (s ≥ 1 is identical for all stations). We show that the throughput function of the network is Schur concave with respect to the loading of the stations and arrangement increasing with respect to the assignment of server groups. Consequently, different loading/assignment policies can be compared under majorization/arrangement orderings and their relative merits decided according to the yields of throughput. The results can be used to support planning decisions in computer and production systems which are modeled as closed networks of queues.  相似文献
