A large population of independent identical units having finite mean lifetime T is observed. From the history A(y) of cumulative arrivals and the history B(y) of cumulative removals in the interval 0 ≦ y ≦ τ one must predict at time τ the desired T . Two lifetime predictors X(τ) and Y(τ) and related simple predictors obtained from A(y) and B(y) are shown to converge to T with a rate of convergence dependent on the structure of the failure rate function of the units. This dependence is studied theoretically and numerically.  相似文献

Although cycling in the simplex method has long been known, a number of theoretical questions concerning cycling have not been fully answered. One of these, stated in [3], is to find the smallest example of cycling, and Beale's example with three equations and seven variables is conjectured to be the smallest one. The exact bounds on dimensions of cycling examples are established in this paper. We show that Beale's example is the smallest one which cycles at a non-optimal solution, that a smaller one can cycle at the optimum, and that, in general (including the completely degenerate case), a cycling example must have at least two equations, at least six variables, and at least three non-basic variables. Examples and geometries are given for the extreme cases, showing that the bounds are sharp.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to formulate the multi-commodity maximal flow problem into a node-arc form and to show that when decomposition is applied to this form the resulting master and subproblems become precisely those described by Ford & Fulkerson [3] using the arc-chain formulation. We consider a general repair process where the virtual age Vi after the ith repair is given by Vi = ϕ(Vi−1 + Xi), ϕ(·) is a specified repair functional, and Xi is the time between the (i − 1)th and ith repair. Some monotonicity and dominance properties are derived, and an equilibrium process is considered. This paper considers the maintenance of aircraft engine components where economies exist for joint replacement because (a) the aircraft must be pulled from service for maintenance and (b) repair of some components requires removal and disassembly of the engine. It is well known that the joint replacement problem is difficult to solve exactly, because the optimal solution does not have a simple structured form. Therefore, we formulate three easy-to-implement heuristics and test their performance against a lower bound for various numerical examples. One of our heuristics, the base interval approach, in which replacement cycles for all components are restricted to be multiples of a specified interval, is shown to be robustly accurate. Moreover, this heuristic is consistent with maintenance policies used by commercial airlines in which periodic maintenance checks are made at regular intervals. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Consider a simulation experiment consisting of v independent vector replications across k systems, where in any given replication one system is selected as the best performer (i.e., it wins). Each system has an unknown constant probability of winning in any replication and the numbers of wins for the individual systems follow a multinomial distribution. The classical multinomial selection procedure of Bechhofer, Elmaghraby, and Morse (Procedure BEM) prescribes a minimum number of replications, denoted as v*, so that the probability of correctly selecting the true best system (PCS) meets or exceeds a prespecified probability. Assuming that larger is better, Procedure BEM selects as best the system having the largest value of the performance measure in more replications than any other system. We use these same v* replications across k systems to form (v*)k pseudoreplications that contain one observation from each system, and develop Procedure AVC (All Vector Comparisons) to achieve a higher PCS than with Procedure BEM. For specific small-sample cases and via a large-sample approximation we show that the PCS with Procedure AVC exceeds the PCS with Procedure BEM. We also show that with Procedure AVC we achieve a given PCS with a smaller v than the v* required with Procedure BEM. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article considers the problem of joint control of attribute and variable quality characteristics of a given product. Items are acceptable if they meet the specifications for both types of quality characteristics at the same time. Otherwise, the items are sold as scrap at reduced prices. The objective is to determine simultaneously the target values for each characteristic so as to maximize the expected profit per item. Several item-by-item quality-inspection plans are formulated on the basis of various inspection strategies. These strategies are defined in terms of whether the inspection is to be carried out simultaneously for both characteristics, or sequentially, or whether inspection for one of the characteristics is to be ignored. All these plans are shown to differ in terms of their profitability. However, they all yield equivalent quality standards. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the application of these models.  相似文献

Modification of algorithms designed for scalar computing, to take advantage of vector processing, raises several challenges. This article presents the vectorization of the primal simplex based network algorithm and results in a 50% improvement in computational time. One of the major contributors to this improvement is the matching of the size of the pricing candidate list to the vector register size. The side constraints are relaxed into a single surrogate constraint. The single constraint network algorithm is vectorized and used as the basis for solving large-scale constrained network problems. Computational experiments are presented which illustrate the vectorization of the network code as well as the ability of the surrogate constraint approach to deal with large constrained network problems.  相似文献
