In this article, we study the design and control of manufacturing cells with a mix of manual and automated equipment, operating under a CONWIP pull protocol, and staffed by a single agile (cross‐trained) worker. For a three‐station line with one automated station, we fully characterize the structure of the optimal control policy for the worker and show that it is a static priority policy. Using analytical models and extensive simulation experiments, we also evaluate the effectiveness of practical heuristic control policies and provide managerial insights on automation configuration design of the line. This characterization of the worker control policy enables us to develop managerial insights into the design issues of how best to locate and concentrate automation in the line. Finally, we show that, in addition to ease of control and greater design flexibility, the CONWIP protocol also offers higher efficiency and robustness than does the push protocol. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present a family of tests to detect the presence of a transient mean in a simulation process. These tests compare variance estimators from different parts of a simulation run, and are based on the methods of batch means and standardized time series. Our tests can be viewed as natural generalizations of some previously published work. An economic sequential screening procedure is considered for limited failure populations in which defective items fail soon after they are put in operation and nondefective ones never fail during the technical life of the items. A cost model is constructed that involves screening test cost and external failure cost. This article examines the applicability of acceptance sampling and the effectiveness of Deming's kp rule in relation to the degree of process stability achieved through statistical process control techniques. A discrete-event simulation model is used to characterize the correlation between the number of defective units in a randomly drawn sample versus in the remainder of a lot, in response to a number of system and control chart parameters. The model reveals that such correlation is typically present when special causes of variation affect the production process from time to time, even though the process is tightly monitored through statistical process control. Comparison of these results to an analogous mixed binomial scenario reveals that the mixed binomial model overstates the correlation in question if the state of the process is not necessarily constant during lot production. A generalization of the kp analysis is presented that incorporates the possibility of dependence between a sample and the unsampled portion of the lot. This analysis demonstrates that acceptance sampling is generally ineffective for lots generated by a process subject to statistical process control, despite the fact that the number of defectives in the sample and in the remainder of the lot are not strictly independent. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

In this article we present a stochastic model for determining inventory rotation policies for a retail firm which must stock many hundreds of distinctive items having uncertain heterogeneous sales patterns. The model develops explicit decision rules for determining (1) the length of time that an item should remain in inventory before the decision is made on whether or not to rotate the item out of inventory and (2) the minimum sales level necessary for retaining the item in inventory. Two inventory rotation policies are developed, the first of which maximizes cumulative expected sales over a finite planning horizon and the second of which maximizes cumulative expected profit. We also consider the statistical behavior of items having uncertain, discrete, and heterogeneous sales patterns using a two-period prediction methodology where period 1 is used to accumulate information on individual sales rates and this knowledge is then used, in a Bayesian context, to make sales predictions for period 2. This methodology assumes that over an arbitrary time interval sales for each item are Poisson with unknown but stationary mean sales rates and the mean sales rates are distributed gamma across all items. We also report the application of the model to a retail firm which stocks many hundreds of distinctive unframed poster art titles. The application provides some useful insights into the behavior of the model as well as some interesting aspects pertaining to the implementation of the results in a “real-world” situation. 相似文献

We present an algorithm called the exact ceiling point algorithm (XCPA) for solving the pure, general integer linear programming problem (P). A recent report by the authors demonstrates that, if the set of feasible integer solutions for (P) is nonempty and bounded, all optimal solutions for (P) are “feasible 1-ceiling points,” roughly, feasible integer solutions lying on or near the boundary of the feasible region for the LP-relaxation associated with (P). Consequently, the XCPA solves (P) by implicitly enumerating only feasible 1-ceiling points, making use of conditional bounds and “double backtracking.” We discuss the results of computational testing on a set of 48 problems taken from the literature. 相似文献

We examine the static sequencing problem of ordering the processing of jobs on a single machine so as to minimize the average weighted flow time. It is assumed that all jobs have zero ready times, and that the jobs are grouped into classes with the property that setup tasks are only required when processing switches from jobs of one class to jobs of another class. The time required for each setup task is given by the sum of a setdown time from the previous class and a setup time for the new class. We show that an algorithm presented in the literature for solving a special case of this problem gives suboptimal solutions. A number of properties of the optimal solution are derived, and their use in algorithms is evaluated. Computational results are presented for both a branch-and-bound procedure and a simpler depth-first search. 相似文献
