After the conclusion of the 2008 Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Nonproliferation Review interviewed Ambassador Yukiya Amano of Japan, who presided over the 2007 session of the PrepCom in Vienna. He provided valuable insights into his preparations for the PrepCom and shared his thoughts on some of the most pressing issues that confronted his chairmanship and the PrepCom as a whole. An integral equation for the second moment function of a geometric process and its numerical solution

In this article, an integral equation satisfied by the second moment function M2(t) of a geometric process is obtained. The numerical method based on the trapezoidal integration rule proposed by Tang and Lam for the geometric function M(t) is adapted to solve this integral equation. To illustrate the numerical method, the first interarrival time is assumed to be one of four common lifetime distributions, namely, exponential, gamma, Weibull, and lognormal. In addition to this method, a power series expansion is derived using the integral equation for the second moment function M2(t), when the first interarrival time has an exponential distribution. 相似文献

This paper deals with search for a target following a Markovian movement or a conditionally deterministic motion. The problem is to allocate the search efforts, when search resources renew with generalized linear constraints. The model obtained is extended to resource mixing management. We consider the scheduling of n tasks on a single resource. Each task becomes available for processing at time ai, must be completed by time bi, and requires di time units for processing. The aim is to find a schedule that minimizes the elapsed time to complete all jobs. We present solution algorithms for this problem when job splitting is permitted and when job splitting is not permitted. Then we consider several scheduling situations which arise in practice where these models may apply. 相似文献

This article examines a relaxed version of the generic vehicle routing problem. In this version, a delivery to a demand point can be split between any number of vehicles. In spite of this relaxation the problem remains computationally hard. Since only small instances of the vehicle routing problem are known to be solved using exact methods, the vehicle route construction for this problem version is approached using heuristic rules. The main contribution of this article to the existing body of literature on vehicle routing issues in (a) is presenting a new vehicle routing problem amenable to practical applications, and (b) demonstrating the potential for cost savings over similar “traditional” vehicle routing when implementing the model and solutions presented here. The solution scheme allowing for split deliveries is compared with a solution in which no split deliveries are allowed. The comparison is conducted on six sets of 30 problems each for problems of size 75, 115, and 150 demand points (all together 540 problems). For very small demands (up to 10% of vehicle's capacity) no significant difference in solutions is evident for both solution schemes. For the other five problem sets for which point demand exceeds 10% of vehicle's capacity, very significant cost savings are realized when allowing split deliveries. The savings are significant both in the total distance and the number of vehicles required. The vehicles' routes constructed by our procedure tend to cover cohesive geographical zones and retain some properties of optimal solutions. 相似文献

Abstract Malawi's political transition from single-party rule to multiparty democracy in June 1994 raised expectations for sustainable peace in the country by, among others, passing a new legal framework that provided for conflict resolution mechanisms and good governance. However, political conflicts that have posed challenges to the foundations of peace and political stability have been a characteristic of the multiparty dispensation, leading to interventions by indigenous institutions whose aim is to build peace. This paper, which is based on field research, analyses the major political conflicts that have occurred on Malawi's political scene since the 1990s. Using the Public Affairs Committee as a case study, the paper illustrates the challenges facing the indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms. It also shows that despite the political transition, the socio-political environment still exhibits political behaviour and norms formed during the 30 years of single-party rule. There is a need for capacity-building and deliberate policy to enhance the indigenous-based mechanisms in order to promote sustainable peace in the country. 相似文献
