In this article we consider block replacement policies where the operating item is replaced by a new one at times kT, k = 1, 2, …, independently of its failure history. At failure the item is either replaced by a new or a used one or remains inactive until the next planned replacement. The mathematical model is defined and general analytical results are obtained. Resource-constrained project scheduling with cash flows occurs in many settings, ranging from research and development to commercial and residential construction. Although efforts have been made to develop efficient optimal procedures to maximize the net present value of cash flows for resource-constrained projects, the inherent intractability of the problem has led to the development of a variety of heuristic methods to aid in the development of near-optimal schedules for large projects. This research focuses on the use of insights gained from the solution of a relaxed optimization model in developing heuristic procedures to schedule projects with multiple constrained resources. It is shown that a heuristic procedure with embedded priority rules that uses information from the revised solution of a relaxed optimization model increases project net present value. The heuristic procedure and nine different embedded priority rules are tested in a variety of project environments that account for different network structures, levels of resource constrainedness, and cash-flow parameters. Extensive testing with problems ranging in size from 21 to 1000 activities shows that the new heuristic procedures dominate heuristics using information from the critical path method (CPM), and in most cases outperform heuristics from previous research. The best performing heuristic rules classify activities into priority and secondary queues according to whether they lead to immediate progress payments, thus front loading the project schedule. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article counters Michael Walzer's argument against tight blockades. It shows that the interdiction of food shipments need not violate the principle of noncombatant immunity. Whether it is morally permissible to impose a strict blockade depends on the circumstances of the target state. The more self-sufficient a country is, the more acceptable it should be for a belligerent to cut the enemy's external lines of supply. A fundamental difficulty in developing effective production planning models has been accurately reflecting the nonlinear dependency between workload and lead times. We develop a mathematical programming model for production planning in multiproduct, single stage systems that captures the nonlinear dependency between workload and lead times. We then use outer linearization of this nonlinear model to obtain a linear programming formulation and extend it to multistage systems. In this article, we study the design and control of manufacturing cells with a mix of manual and automated equipment, operating under a CONWIP pull protocol, and staffed by a single agile (cross‐trained) worker. For a three‐station line with one automated station, we fully characterize the structure of the optimal control policy for the worker and show that it is a static priority policy. Using analytical models and extensive simulation experiments, we also evaluate the effectiveness of practical heuristic control policies and provide managerial insights on automation configuration design of the line. This characterization of the worker control policy enables us to develop managerial insights into the design issues of how best to locate and concentrate automation in the line. Finally, we show that, in addition to ease of control and greater design flexibility, the CONWIP protocol also offers higher efficiency and robustness than does the push protocol. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
