This article looks at dominant definitions of empire, in particular those emphasizing large polities as the sole agents of imperial expansion. By doing so, it draws attention to the overlooked role of filibusters: private, non-state actors who initiate unauthorized military endeavours, either in an attempt to carve out empires for themselves or for their home state. It demonstrates that filibustering is not a practice unique only to the Americas or to the nineteenth century as so much of the literature suggests. Lastly, it scrutinizes the cultural and historical impact of the phenomenon. In terms of the former, it argues that filibustering had an important literary and filmic influence. Regarding the latter, it advocates that it frequently led to further violent intercessions in many of the countries occupied and influenced a particular style of proto-fascistic and charismatic militarism. 相似文献

We consider a single-machine problem of scheduling n independent jobs to minimize makespan, in which the processing time of job Jj grows by wj with each time unit its start is delayed beyond a given common critical date d. This processing time is pj if Jj starts by d. We show that this problem is NP-hard, give a pseudopolynomial algorithm that runs in time and O(nd) space, and develop a branch-and-bound algorithm that solves instances with up to 100 jobs in a reasonable amount of time. We also introduce the case of bounded deterioration, where the processing time of a job grows no further if the job starts after a common maximum deterioration date D > d. In this article, we consider shortest path problems in a directed graph where the transitions between nodes are subject to uncertainty. We use a minimax formulation, where the objective is to guarantee that a special destination state is reached with a minimum cost path under the worst possible instance of the uncertainty. Problems of this type arise, among others, in planning and pursuit‐evasion contexts, and in model predictive control. Our analysis makes use of the recently developed theory of abstract semicontractive dynamic programming models. 运用Etkin非定常气动力模型,将谐波平衡法应用于复杂外形动导数辨识。计算结果表明:谐波平衡法和时域方法的动导数辨识结果一致,与实验值吻合,验证了程序的正确性和谐波平衡法的可靠性。采用谐波平衡法对类X-51高超声速机体/推进一体化飞行器WR-A进行动导数辨识,并与时域方法的计算结果比较,考察了该方法在复杂外形下数值模拟非定常流动和动导数辨识的能力。实验结果表明:对于WR-A这种复杂外形飞行器,谐波平衡法也能在保证精度的同时具有较高的计算效率。 相似文献
