The origins of the cancellation of Canada's Avro CF-105 arrow fighter program: A failure of strategy

The story of the demise of Canada's remarkable CF-105 Arrow jet-fighter interceptor has been told and retold by numerous Canadian writers. As told by most, it is a tragic tale. Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, in an act as unforgivable as it was incomprehensible, not only destroyed a highly promising all-Canadian state-of-the-art aircraft but ruined all hopes of Canada ever being an important player in the North American defense industry. This article offers a contrasting interpretation — locating the problems leading to the aircraft's cancellation further back in history, and in particular in serious and determinative failures in strategic thinking and analysis by senior Canadian military officials at the time of the Arrow program's birth in 1953.     

The salvo combat model with area fire

This article analyzes versions of the salvo model of missile combat where area fire is used by one or both sides in a battle. Although these models share some properties with the area fire Lanchester model and the aimed fire salvo model, they also display some interesting differences, especially over the course of several salvos. Although the relative size of each force is important with aimed fire, with area fire, it is the absolute size that matters. Similarly, although aimed fire exhibits square law behavior, area fire shows approximately linear behavior. Kinetics in counterinsurgency: some influences on soldier combat performance in the 1st Australian Task Force in the Vietnam War

Counterinsurgency is often characterized by large numbers of small fire-fights interspersed with a few larger battles. Heavy firepower contributes to the outcome of the larger battles but the smaller contacts are often fought by infantry without heavy weapons support. Infantry combat performance in these fire-fights is therefore a key concern. It has been fashionable to discuss soldier combat performance in terms of ‘firers’, ‘non-firers’, and ‘posturers’, but we argue that other factors have a greater impact. We provide a detailed statistical analysis of a selection of combat factors, using combat data collected by the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) during the Vietnam War. An accepted measure of soldier lethality is the ‘shots per casualty’ ratio. Using this measure we are now able to describe the combat performance of the Australian infantry section in Vietnam in much greater detail than has hitherto been possible.

某岸舰导弹作战指挥模拟系统的设计

针对岸舰导弹作战指挥训练设计的模拟系统,运用直接模拟的方法构建系统框架,给出了作战指挥、发射过程和飞行弹道模拟的方法,分析了矢量海图的制作和嵌入技术,运用墨卡托制图原理和导弹射击理论建立了射击计算数学模型,运用GDI+绘图和数据库技术实现了战斗现场保存回放功能.     

考虑气象因素的飞机空战能力评估模型

针对指数法评估飞机空战能力的不足,研究了气象环境对飞机作战效能的影响,分析了综合指数模型中飞机操纵性能、态势感知能力、火力性能受不良气象条件的影响,建立了不良气象环境下的飞机系统空战效能评估模型。最后以3种机型的空战能力评估为例进行计算,验证了所建模型是合理、可行的。

基于几何关系的视线指令制导律研究

针对近程车载防空系统拦截空地导弹的制导问题,设计了一种视线指令制导律.首先建立了地面站、拦截弹和空地导弹三者之间相对运动模型,然后以控制拦截弹位于地面站和空地导弹连线上为目标,根据三者在空间的几何关系设计了一种视线指令制导律,并对拦截的可行性进行了分析.仿真结果验证了所设计的制导律能够有效保证地面站的安全,与比例导引律相比,提高了制导精度,缩短了拦截时间.     

空舰导弹火控系统精度分析研究

介绍了一种空舰导弹火控系统动态精度试验的试验方法、误差分析理论和方法.用导弹火控系统的数据测量设备获取火控系统输出射击诸元参数实际值,再测量载机和靶船的位置和运动参数,经真值解算模型解算出射击诸元参数标准值.将实际值与标准值进行比较与分析,即可得知空舰导弹火控系统的动态精度是否满足要求.此方法已成功地应用于导弹火控系统精度飞行试验中.     

远海作战装备供应链体系架构

信息化使战争的节奏加快,如何满足快节奏战争对装备的需求,无疑是军事保障领域值得研究的一个问题.供应链思想被引入军事物资保障系统后,已在多个领域发挥了显著的效用.建立装备供应链网络对提升远海作战装备供应能力既有现实意义又是可行的,这是因为：一方面信息化条件下远海作战需要更有效率的装备供应体系,另一方面企业供应链为装备供应链提供了可以借鉴的模式.本文通过对远海作战装备供应链目标和特征的分析,参照企业供应链和美军海上供应链建设的情况,建立了远海作战装备供应链网络,并对供应链流程进行了说明.
