When is model complexity too much? Illustrating the benefits of simple models with Hughes' salvo equations

The simulations that many defense analysts rely upon in their studies continue to grow in size and complexity. This paper contrasts the guidance that the authors have received—from some of the giants of military operations research—with the current practice. In particular, the analytic utility of Hughes' simple salvo equations is compared with that of the complex Joint Warfighting System (JWARS), with respect to JWARS' key performance parameters. The comparison suggests that a family of analytic tools supports the best analyses. It follows that smaller, more agile, and transparent models, such as Hughes' salvo equations, are underutilized in defense analyses. We believe that these models should receive more attention, use, and funding. To illustrate this point, this paper uses two very simple models (by modern standards) to rapidly generate insights on the value of information relative to force strength. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The value of information sharing in a two‐stage supply chain with production capacity constraints

We consider a simple two‐stage supply chain with a single retailer facing i.i.d. demand and a single manufacturer with finite production capacity. We analyze the value of information sharing between the retailer and the manufacturer over a finite time horizon. In our model, the manufacturer receives demand information from the retailer even during time periods in which the retailer does not order. To analyze the impact of information sharing, we consider the following three strategies: (1) the retailer does not share demand information with the manufacturer; (2) the retailer does share demand information with the manufacturer and the manufacturer uses the optimal policy to schedule production; (3) the retailer shares demand information with the manufacturer and the manufacturer uses a greedy policy to schedule production. These strategies allow us to study the impact of information sharing on the manufacturer as a function of the production capacity, and the frequency and timing in which demand information is shared. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 产品网络化协同开发系统信息处理模型研究

产品网络协同开发系统信息处理模型是现代制造企业从事产品开发、提高企业核心竞争力的关键。在分析产品网络化协同开发系统现状的基础上,阐明了产品网络化协同开发系统的基本内涵及实现方法。提出了基于输入、输出、知识、关系、方法和时间约束六个方面组成的产品网络化协同开发系统的信息处理统一模型;建立了一个面向产品开发全过程协同的信息流模型,构建了产品网络化协同开发平台信息流模型的软件结构,为制造企业建立产品网络协同开发平台,实现产品开发过程的信息化、科学化和规范化进行了有益的工作。     

某型柴油发动机油液监测光谱信息分析

运用油液监测技术连续5年对近600台次某型履带式车辆做了跟踪监测,并利用互信息理论对某型柴油发动机的光谱数据进行处理,发现了磨损元素的相关性,得出构成某型柴油发动机的主要磨损元素是铁、硅、铝和铬,比较重要的磨损部位发生在活塞—缸体部位。     

雷达组网系统仿真试验信息源软件研制

针对目前雷达模拟器不能满足雷达组网系统调试与模拟测试需求的问题,在分析雷达组网系统测试信息源功能需求的基础上,采用纯软件的实现方法,从体系结构、功能模块和信息流3个方面对系统进行了详细的设计,讨论分析了具体技术实现中的几个关键问题,给出了具体的仿真实例。系统测试结果验证了设计的合理性,该设计满足了雷达组网系统测试对目标和雷达控制灵活性等多方面的需求。     

警卫部队信息化建设新发展的实践与思考

随着全国公安机关部署以信息化建设为龙头的＂三项建设＂全面展开,警卫部队的信息化建设也进入一个新的发展阶段.在新一轮信息化建设过程中,真正促进警卫部队整体战斗力的提升,需要对前一阶段的信息化建设有一个理性的回顾和冷静的思考.结合上海警卫工作实际和警卫部队特点,对信息化建设进一步发展的具体思路进行了探索性阐述,提出一些新的观点和理念.
