Mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of pristine andfunctionalized carbon nanotube reinforced metallic glass composites:A molecular dynamics approach

This work uses the molecular dynamics approach to study the effects of functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the mechanical properties of Cu64Zr36 metallic glass (MG). Three types of functional groups, carboxylic, vinyl and ester were used. The effect of CNT volume fraction (Vf) and the number of functional groups attached to CNT, on the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of CNT-MG composites was analysed using Biovia Materials Studio. At lower values of Vf (from 0 to 5％), the per-centage increase in Young's modulus was approximately 66％. As the value of Vf was increased further (from 5 to 12％), the rate of increase in Young's modulus was reduced to 16％. The thermal conductivity was found to increase from 1.52 W/mK at Vf=0％to 5.88 W/mK at Vf=12％, thus giving an increase of approximately 286％. Functionalization of SWCNT reduced the thermal conductivity of the SWCNT-MG composites.     

Bayesian inference of survival curve from record-breaking observations: Estimation and asymptotic results

In a variety of industrial situations experimental outcomes are only record-breaking observations. The data available may be represented as X₁, K_1., X₂, K₂,…, where X₁, X₂,… are the successive minima and K₁, K₂, … are the number of trials needed to obtain new records. Samaniego and Whitaker [11, 12] discussed the problem of estimating the survival function in both parametric and nonparametric setups when the data consisted of record-breaking observations. In this article we derive nonparametric Bayes and empirical Bayes estimators of the survival function for such data under a Dirichlet process prior and squared error loss. Furthermore, under the assumptions that the process of observing random records can be replicated, the weak convergence of the Bayes estimator is studied as the number of replications grows large. The calculations involved are illustrated by adopting Proschan's [9] data on successive failure times of air conditioning units on Boeing aircraft, for our purpose. The nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators of the survival function for different choices of the prior are displayed for comparison purposes.

DOES DEFENCE SPENDING STIMULATE ECONOMIC GROWTH IN INDIA? A REVISIT

This study reinvestigates the effect of defence spending on economic growth using Zivot and Andrews and Lee and Strazicich, structural unit root tests and the autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing approach to cointegration in augmented version of Keynesian model for India. Study confirmed long run relationship among variables studied show that economic growth is positively affected by defence spending (also negative impact after a threshold point), investment and trade openness while negatively by interest rate. Granger causality analysis revealed bidirectional causal relationship between defence spending and economic growth as probed by variance decomposition approach.     

Is the Indian Nuclear Tiger Changing Its Stripes?

Sixteen years after stepping out of the nuclear closet, India's nuclear posture, some of its operational practices, and hardware developments are beginning to mimic those of the original five nuclear weapon states. Several proliferation scholars in the United States contend that India's national security managers are poised to repeat the worst mistakes of the superpowers’ Cold War nuclear competition, with negative consequences for deterrence, crisis, and stability in South Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. This article takes a contrarian view. It dissects the best available data to show why the alarmist view is overstated. It argues that not only are the alarmists’ claims unsupported by evidence, their interpretation of the skeletal and often contradictory data threatens to construct the very threat they prophesize.
