The production-location problem of a profit maximizing firm is considered. A model is developed for a single firm, facing the joint problems of determining the optimal plant location, the optimal input mix, and the optimal plant size. A homothetic production function is used as the model of the production technologies, and the existence of a sequential “separability” between the production, or input mix, problem and the location problem is demonstrated.  相似文献

In scheduling problems with two competing agents, each one of the agents has his own set of jobs to be processed and his own objective function, and both share a common processor. In the single‐machine problem studied in this article, the goal is to find a joint schedule that minimizes the total deviation of the job completion times of the first agent from a common due‐date, subject to an upper bound on the maximum deviation of job completion times of the second agent. The problem is shown to be NP‐hard even for a nonrestrictive due‐date, and a pseudopolynomial dynamic program is introduced and tested numerically. For the case of a restrictive due‐date (a sufficiently small due‐date that may restrict the number of early jobs), a faster pseudopolynomial dynamic program is presented. We also study the multiagent case, which is proved to be strongly NP‐hard. A simple heuristic for this case is introduced, which is tested numerically against a lower bound, obtained by extending the dynamic programming algorithm. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The joint problems of determining the optimal plant location and optimal input mix and plant size are addressed. The interrelationship between input substitutability and plant location is stressed. Conditions under which the location problem can be separated from the determination of the optimal input mix are developed for a number of problem variations. The stability of the optimal location in the face of changes in problem parameters is also discussed. It is demonstrated that consideration of input substitutability often makes the resulting problem no more difficult to solve than problem formulations in which the inherent input substitutability is ignored.  相似文献

This article extends the traditional median problem on a grid to include a diagonal line (e.g., a street). In contrast to the traditional median problem, this generalized problem is nonconvex and nonseparable, invalidating some of the properties on which well-known median-seeking algorithms are based. This work presents an algorithm for finding the median on this generalized grid and discusses the relationship between it and the traditional median.  相似文献

Functional equations enable us to arrive at a simple consensus model for fatigue life of longitudinal elements based on engineering principles. The model is then applied to two representative data sets. By the application of proportional hazards techniques and subsequent likelihood analysis, simple parsimonious Weibull models are derived.
