Approximate probability distributions for the extreme spread

The extreme spread, or greatest distance between all pairs of impact points on a target, is often used as a rapid measure of dispersion or precision of shot groups on a target. It is therefore desirable to know its statistical properties. Since the exact theoretical distribution has not yet been worked out, this paper examines the accuracy of several approximations which are checked against large sample monte carlo values. We find in particular that for the sample sizes considered the extreme spread can be approximated well by a Chi variate.     

Collecting Oriental and Asiatic Arms and Armour: The Activities of British and East India Company Officers,c.1800-1850

During the first half of the 19th century substantial quantities of Oriental and Asiatic arms and armour first began to appear in Britain. On the one hand they certainly reflected the expansion of empire but their wider significance has yet to be discussed. This article seeks to address that omission by exploring the growth of interest in these objects within military circles, what they represented to the individuals who acquired them, and how they fitted into the wider collecting strategies of military officers as a group.

The Defence Procurement Executive is the single largest customer of British industry and controls some 127 000 contracts. As Chief of Defence Procurement, Dr McIntosh explains the effects of expanding market forces on defence contracts and the suppliers, before continuing to outline the prospects for future competitive contracts in view of the recent cuts in defence budgets.
