This paper presents a branch‐and‐price algorithm for scheduling n jobs on m nonhomogeneous parallel machines with multiple time windows. An additional feature of the problem is that each job falls into one of ρ priority classes and may require two operations. The objective is to maximize the weighted number of jobs scheduled, where a job in a higher priority class has “infinitely” more weight or value than a job in a lower priority class. The methodology makes use of a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) to find feasible solutions during implicit enumeration and a two‐cycle elimination heuristic when solving the pricing subproblems. Extensive computational results are presented based on data from an application involving the use of communications relay satellites. Many 100‐job instances that were believed to be beyond the capability of exact methods, were solved within minutes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2006  相似文献

Studied here is the problem of evaluating the formation of coalitions in cooperative games by considering its internal and external effects. Our analysis is based upon a formal theory of the quotient game and the use of multilinear extensions to compute the Shapley value and the coalitional value. We examine the problem of scheduling n jobs with a common due date on a single machine. The processing time of each job is a random variable, which follows an arbitrary distribution with a known mean and a known variance. The machine is not reliable; it is subject to stochastic breakdowns. The objective is to minimize the expected sum of squared deviations of job completion times from the due date. Two versions of the problem are addressed. In the first one the due date is a given constant, whereas in the second one the due date is a decision variable. In each case, a general form of the deterministic equivalent of the stochastic scheduling problem is obtained when the counting process related to the machine uptime distribution is a generalized Poisson process. A sufficient condition is derived under which optimal sequences are V-shaped with respect to mean processing times. Other characterizations of optimal solutions are also established. Based on the optimality properties, algorithms with pseudopolynomial time complexity are proposed to solve both versions of the problem. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Practitioners of maintenance scheduling sometimes use a simple analytic formula, derived based on inspection scheduling, as a heuristic to determine the length of the preventive maintenance period. The sensitivity of this heuristic solution is analyzed and the cost penalties are calculated compared to the exact solution that utilizes the lifetime distribution in the derivation of the optimal preventive maintenance period. A simple extension of the heuristic is suggested to improve the approximation with a slightly increased computational effort. With the recent trend toward just-in-time deliveries and reduction of inventories, many firms are reexamining their inventory and logistics policies. Some firms have dramatically altered their inventory, production, and shipping policies with the goal of reducing costs and improving service. Part of this restructuring may involve a specific contract with a trucking company, or it may entail establishing in-house shipping capabilities. This restructuring, however, raises new questions regarding the choice of optimal trucking capacity, shipping frequency, and inventory levels. In this study, we examine a two-level distribution system composed of a warehouse and a retailer. We assume that demand at the retailer is random. Since the warehouse has no advance notice of the size of the retailer order, inventory must be held there as well as at the retailer. We examine inventory policies at both the warehouse and the retailer, and we explicitly consider the trucking capacity, and the frequency of deliveries from the warehouse to the retailer. Both linear and concave fixed transportation costs are examined. We find the optimal base stock policies at both locations, the optimal in-house or contracted regular truck capacity, and the optimal review period (or, equivalently, delivery frequency). For the case of normally distributed demand we provide analytical results and numerical examples that yield insight into systems of this type. Some of our results are counterintuitive. For instance, we find some cases in which the optimal truck capacity decreases as the variability of demand increases. Empirical distance functions are used to estimate actual travel distances in a transportation network, to verify the accuracy of road mileage data, and to formulate continuous location models. In this article we consider the problem of fitting the weighted lp norm to a given network. Mathematical properties are derived for two fitting criteria found in the literature. These properties are used to develop an accurate and efficient methodology to solve for the best-fitting parameter values. The directional bias of the lp norm is analyzed for its effect on the range of search for the optimal p value. Concepts and methodology are applied to a case study of the road system in Southern Ontario. In conclusion, a general framework for other types of distance functions is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Shipbuilding as currently practiced in U.S. commercial shipyards employs little quantitative modeling or analysis in production planning. This paper presents a brief discussion of the shipbuilding process and focuses on one major component which is referred to as outfitting. The outfit planning problem is described in detail and then formally modeled as a generalization of the resource constrained project scheduling problem. The value of the approach as well as barriers to its adoption are also discussed.  相似文献

This article considers the problem of joint control of attribute and variable quality characteristics of a given product. Items are acceptable if they meet the specifications for both types of quality characteristics at the same time. Otherwise, the items are sold as scrap at reduced prices. The objective is to determine simultaneously the target values for each characteristic so as to maximize the expected profit per item. Several item-by-item quality-inspection plans are formulated on the basis of various inspection strategies. These strategies are defined in terms of whether the inspection is to be carried out simultaneously for both characteristics, or sequentially, or whether inspection for one of the characteristics is to be ignored. All these plans are shown to differ in terms of their profitability. However, they all yield equivalent quality standards. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the application of these models.  相似文献

Empirical Bayes single-sample acceptance sampling procedures are derived. These procedures assume that the lot fraction defective varies randomly according to a completely unknown and unspecified prior distribution. The unknown prior density function is estimated based on sampling results from previous lots. A procedure is developed for obtaining single-sampling plans that achieve specified posterior consumer and producer risks. The procedures are illustrated for a real-data example.  相似文献
