Single server queues with hyperexponential service times

Single server queues with hyperexponential service times are studied. Explicit expressions are derived for the waiting time and state distributions.     

Waypoint analysis for command and control

Command and Control (C2) in a military setting can be epitomized in battles‐of‐old when commanders would seek high ground to gain superior spatial‐temporal information; from this vantage point, decisions were made and relayed to units in the field. Although the fundamentals remain, technology has changed the practice of C2; for example, enemy units may be observed remotely, with instruments of varying positional accuracy. A basic problem in C2 is the ability to track an enemy object in the battlespace and to forecast its future position; the (extended) Kalman filter provides a straightforward solution. The problem changes fundamentally if one assumes that the moving object is headed for an (unknown) location, or waypoint. This article is concerned with the new problem of estimation of such a waypoint, for which we use Bayesian statistical prediction. The computational burden is greater than an ad hoc regression‐based estimate, which we also develop, but the Bayesian approach has a big advantage in that it yields both a predictor and a measure of its variability. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An approximation for the waiting time distribution in single server queues

Single server queues with general interarrival and service times are approximated by queues with two-point (Bernoulli) interarrival times and exponential service times. The parameters are chosen such that the first four moments of the difference of the service times and interarrival times in the approximating system equal those of the original system. The aptness of the approximation is discussed and some examples are presented comparing the exact and approximate waiting time distributions. A more complicated approximation is presented using the dual system (exponential arrivals, Bernoulli service) for those cases where the original approximation cannot be used.     

Statistical quality control of information

This paper was written to promote interest by management and statistical quality control personnel in the current need for statistical quality control of information of all types. By way of illustration, a step by step procedure for implementing such control on computer files is presented. Emphasis has been placed on the sequencing of the system rather than the underlying techniques.     

De Gaulle,the ‘Anglo-Saxons’, and the Algerian war

Rejecting the orthodoxy of French diplomatic historiography that de Gaulle was the founder of a new French independence and effected a revolution in French diplomacy after freeing himself from the Algerian yoke in 1962, this essay argues that de Gaulle sought from 1958 to make Algeria a central plank of his diplomatic strategy. That strategy sought to transform the relationship with Algeria in order forit to become the key to a neo-colonial French community, the basis for French leadership in Europe and the foundation of a new relationship of equality with Britain and the United States. However, largely as a result of de Gaulle's own making this policy failed to materialise.
