In this paper marginal investment costs are assumed known for two kinds of equipment stocks employed to supply telecommunications services: trunks and switching facilities. A network hierarchy is defined which includes important cases occurring in the field and also appearing in the literature. A different use of the classical concept of the marginal capacity of an additional trunk at prescribed blocking probability leads to a linear programming supply model which can be used to compute the sizes of all the high usage trunk groups. The sizes of the remaining trunk groups are approximated by the linear programming models, but can be determined more accurately by alternate methods once all high usage group sizes are computed. The approach applies to larger scale networks than previously reported in the literature and permits direct application of the duality theory of linear programming and its sensitivity analyses to the study and design of switched probabilistic communications networks with multiple busy hours during the day. Numerical results are presented for two examples based on field data, one of which having been designed by the multi-hour engineering method.  相似文献

This paper considers the two different flow shop scheduling problems that arise when, in a two machine problem, one machine is characterized by sequence dependent setup times. The objective is to determine a schedule that minimizes makespan. After establishing the optimally of permutation schedules for both of these problems, an efficient dynamic programming formulation is developed for each of them. Each of these formulations is shown to be comparable, from a computational standpoint, to the corresponding formulation of the traveling salesman problem. Then, the relative merits of the dynamic programming and branch and bound approaches to these two scheduling problems are discussed.  相似文献

To location Li we are to allocate a “generator” and ni “machines” for i = 1, …,k, where n1n1 ≧ … ≧ nk. Although the generators and machines function independently of one another, a machine is operable only if it and the generator at its location are functioning. The problem we consider is that of finding the arrangement or allocation optimizing the number of operable machines. We show that if the objective is to maximize the expected number of operable machines at some future time, then it is best to allocate the best generator and the n1 best machines to location L1, the second-best generator and the n2-next-best machines to location L2, etc. However, this arrangement is not always stochastically optimal. For the case of two generators we give a necessary and sufficient condition that this arrangement is stochastically best, and illustrate the result with several examples.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of military burden on economic growth and extends previous works on the optimal size of government expenditure by exploring how external threat affects the preferences of the households and, in turn, economic growth. Post World War II Italian data are used to estimate nonlinear growth models using time-series semi-parametric methods. The estimates show that total government and civilian burdens are productive, whereas, military burden has significant effects on economic growth through the expenditure for peacekeeping missions, which reduces the insecurity in the home country. This may justify economically the current not negligible budget devoted to peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the collection depots location problem on a network. A facility needs to be located to serve a set of customers. Each service consists of a trip to the customer, collecting materials, dropping the materials at one of the available collection depots and returning to the facility to wait for the next call. Two objectives are considered: minimizing the weighted sum of distances and minimizing the maximum distance.
