The individual and social optimum control policies for entry to an M/M//1 queue serving several classes of customers have been shown to be control-limit policies. The technique of policy iteration provides the social optimum policy for such a queue in a straightforward manner. In this article, the problem of finding the optimal control policy for the M/Ek/1 system is solved, thereby expanding the potential applicability of the solutions developed. The Markovian nature of the queueing system is preserved by considering the service as having k sequential phases, each with independent, identically distributed, exponential service times, through which a customer must pass to be serviced. The optimal policy derived by policy iteration for such a system is likely to be difficult to use because it requires knowledge of the number of phases rather than customers in the system when an arrival occurs. To circumvent this difficulty, a heuristic is used to find a good usable (implementable) solution. In addition, a mixed-integer program is developed which yields the optimal implementable solution when solved.  相似文献

We study via simulation an M/M/1 queueing system with the assumption that a customer's service time and the interarrival interval separating his arrival from that of his predecessor are correlated random variables having a bivariate exponential distribution. We show that positive correlation reduces the mean and variance of the total waiting time and that negative correlation has the opposite effect. By using spectral analysis and a nonparametric test applied to the sample power spectra associated with certain simulated waiting times we show the effect to be statistically significant.  相似文献

This paper extends the Low-Lippman M/M/1 model to the case of Gamma service times. Specifically, we have a queue in which arrivals are Poisson, service time is Gamma-distributed, and the arrival rate to the system is subject to setting an admission fee p. The arrival rate λ(p) is non-increasing in p. We prove that the optimal admission fee p* is a non-decreasing function of the customer work load on the server. The proof is for an infinite capacity queue and holds for the infinite horizon continuous time Markov decision process. In the special case of exponential service time, we extend the Low-Lippman model to include a state-dependent service rate and service cost structure (for finite or infinite time horizon and queue capacity). Relatively recent dynamic programming techniques are employed throughout the paper. Due to the large class of functions represented by the Gamma family, the extension is of interest and utility.  相似文献

The estimation of optimal solution values for large-scale optimization problems is studied. Optimal solution value estimators provide information about the deviation between the optimal solution and the heuristic solution. Some estimation techniques combine heuristic solutions with randomly generated solutions. In particular, we examine a class of jacknife-based estimators which incorporate any heuristic solution value with the two best randomly generated solution values. The primary contribution of this article is that we provide a framework to analytically evaluate a class of optimal solution value estimators. We present closed-form results on the relationship of heuristic performance, sample size, and the estimation errors for the case where the feasible solutions are uniformly distributed. In addition, we show how to compute the estimation errors for distributions other than uniform given a specific sample size. We use a triangular and an exponential distribution as examples of other distributions. A second major contribution of this article is that, to a large extent, our analytical results confirm previous computational results. In particular, the best estimator depends on how good the heuristic is, but seems to be independent of the underlying distribution of solution values. Furthermore, there is essentially an inverse relationship between the heuristic performance and the performance of any estimator. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this article we study the estimation of the average excess life θ in a two-parameter exponential distribution with a known linear relationship between α (the minimum life) and θ of the form α = aθ, where a is known and positive. A comparison of the efficiencies of estimators which are linear combinations of the smallest sample value and the sample sum of deviations from the smallest sample value and the maximum likelihood estimators is made for various sample sizes and different values of a. It is shown that these estimators are dominated in the risk by the minimum-risk scale equivariant estimator based on sufficient statistics. A class of Bayes estimators for inverted gamma priors is constructed and shown to include a minimum-risk scale equivariant estimator in it. All the members of this class can be computed easily.  相似文献

Consider an experiment in which only record-breaking values (e.g., values smaller than all previous ones) are observed. The data available may be represented as X1,K1,X2,K2, …, where X1,X2, … are successive minima and K1,K2, … are the numbers of trials needed to obtain new records. We treat the problem of estimating the mean of an underlying exponential distribution, and we consider both fixed sample size problems and inverse sampling schemes. Under inverse sampling, we demonstrate certain global optimality properties of an estimator based on the “total time on test” statistic. Under random sampling, it is shown than an analogous estimator is consistent, but can be improved for any fixed sample size.  相似文献

We present some results for M/M/1 queues with finite capacities with delayed feedback. The delay in the feedback to an M/M/1 queue is modelled as another M-server queue with a finite capacity. The steady state probabilities for the two dimensional Markov process {N(t), M(t)} are solved when N(t) = queue length at server 1 at t and M(t) = queue length at server 2 at t. It is shown that a matrix operation can be performed to obtain the steady state probabilities. The eigenvalues of the operator and its eigenvectors are found. The problem is solved by fitting boundary conditions to the general solution and by normalizing. A sample problem is run to show that the solution methods can be programmed and meaningful results obtained numerically.  相似文献

An R out of N repairable system consisting of N components and operates if at least R components are functioning. Repairable means that failed components are repaired, and upon repair completion they are as good as new. We derive formulas for the expected up‐time, expected down‐time, and the availability of the system, using Markov renewal processes. We assume that either the repair times of the components are generally distributed and the components' lifetimes are exponential or vice versa. The analysis is done for systems with either cold or warm stand‐by. Numerical examples are given for several life time and repair time distributions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study deals with determining the effects on queuing models of assuming that interarrival and service times are exponentially distributed. Steady-state expected value measures of congestion are compared for a variety of GI/G models when assuming an M/M model as an approximation. The majority of this effort involves single-channel queues; however, some multichannel situations are also considered. In addition, effects of the exponential approximation are observed in certain cost-optimization models.  相似文献

In this paper we study a machine repair problem in which a single unreliable server maintains N identical machines. The breakdown times of the machines are assumed to follow an exponential distribution. The server is subject to failure and the failure times are exponentially distributed. The repair times of the machine and the service times of the repairman are assumed to be of phase type. Using matrix‐analytic methods, we perform steady state analysis of this model. The time spent by a failed machine in service and the total time in the repair facility are shown to be of phase type. Several performance measures are evaluated. An optimization problem to determine the number of machines to be assigned to the server that will maximize the expected total profit per unit time is discussed. An illustrative numerical example is presented. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 50: 462–480, 2003  相似文献

Consider an auction in which increasing bids are made in sequence on an object whose value θ is known to each bidder. Suppose n bids are received, and the distribution of each bid is conditionally uniform. More specifically, suppose the first bid X1 is uniformly distributed on [0, θ], and the ith bid is uniformly distributed on [Xi?1, θ] for i = 2, …?, n. A scenario in which this auction model is appropriate is described. We assume that the value θ is un known to the statistician and must be esimated from the sample X1, X2, …?, Xn. The best linear unbiased estimate of θ is derived. The invariance of the estimation problem under scale transformations in noted, and the best invariant estimation problem under scale transformations is noted, and the best invariant estimate of θ under loss L(θ, a) = [(a/θ) ? 1]2 is derived. It is shown that this best invariant estimate has uniformly smaller mean-squared error than the best linear unbiased estimate, and the ratio of the mean-squared errors is estimated from simulation experiments. A Bayesian formulation of the estimation problem is also considered, and a class of Bayes estimates is explicitly derived.  相似文献

Take n independent identically distributed (IID) observations from a continuous r-variate population, and choose some order statistics from each of the r variates. These order statistics are used to construct a grid in r-dimensional space. Under certain conditions, it is shown that as n increases we can choose an increasing number of order statistics in such a way that the asymptotic joint distribution of the chosen order statistics and of the frequencies of sample points falling in the cells of the grid can be assumed to be a normal distribution. An application to testing independence of random variables is given.  相似文献

This paper considers a single server queueing system that alternates stochastically between two states: operational and failed. When operational, the system functions as an M/Ek/1 queue. When the system is failed, no service takes place but customers continue to arrive according to a Poisson process; however, the arrival rate is different from that when the system is operational. The durations of the operating and failed periods are exponential with mean 1/cβ and Erlang with mean 1/cβ, respectively. Generating functions are used to derive the steady-state quantities L and W, both of which, when viewed as functions of c, decrease at a rate inversely proportional to c2. The paper includes an analysis of several special and extreme cases and an application to a production-storage system.  相似文献

The maximum likelihood estimator of the service distribution function of an M/G/∞ service system is obtained based on output time observations. This estimator is useful when observation of the service time of each customer could introduce bias or may be impossible. The maximum likelihood estimator is compared to the estimator proposed by Mark Brown, [2]. Relative to each other, Brown's estimator is useful in light traffic while the maximum likelihood estimator is applicble in heavy trafic. Both estimators are compared to the empirical distribution function based on a sample of service times and are found to have drawbacks although each estimator may have applications in special circumstances.  相似文献

An explicit steady state solution is determined for the distribution of the number of customers for a queueing system in which Poisson arrivals are bulks of random size. The number of customers per bulk varies randomly between 1 and m, m arbitrary, according to a point multinomial, and customer service is exponential. Queue characteristics are given.  相似文献

Consider a distributed system where many gatekeepers share a single server. Customers arrive at each gatekeeper according to independent Poisson processes with different rates. Upon arrival of a new customer, the gatekeeper has to decide whether to admit the customer by sending it to the server, or to block it. Blocking costs nothing. The gatekeeper receives a reward after a customer completes the service, and incurs a cost if an admitted customer finds a busy server and therefore has to leave the system. Assuming an exponential service distribution, we formulate the problem as an n‐person non‐zero‐sum game in which each gatekeeper is interested in maximizing its own long‐run average reward. The key result is that each gatekeeper's optimal policy is that of a threshold type regardless what other gatekeepers do. We then derive Nash equilibria and discuss interesting insights. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 50: 702–718, 2003.  相似文献

Motivated by applications to service systems, we develop simple engineering approximation formulas for the steady‐state performance of heavily loaded G/GI/n+GI multiserver queues, which can have non‐Poisson and nonrenewal arrivals and non‐exponential service‐time and patience‐time distributions. The formulas are based on recently established Gaussian many‐server heavy‐traffic limits in the efficiency‐driven (ED) regime, where the traffic intensity is fixed at ρ > 1, but the approximations also apply to systems in the quality‐and‐ED regime, where ρ > 1 but ρ is close to 1. Good performance across a wide range of parameters is obtained by making heuristic refinements, the main one being truncation of the queue length and waiting time approximations to nonnegative values. Simulation experiments show that the proposed approximations are effective for large‐scale queuing systems for a significant range of the traffic intensity ρ and the abandonment rate θ, roughly for ρ > 1.02 and θ > 2.0. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reliability Economics is a field that can be defined as the collection of all problems in which there is tension between the performance of systems of interest and their cost. Given such a problem, the aim is to resolve the tension through an optimization process that identifies the system which maximizes some appropriate criterion function (e.g. expected lifetime per unit cost). In this paper, we focus on coherent systems of n independent and identically distributed (iid) components and mixtures thereof, and characterize both a system's performance and cost as functions of the system's signature vector (Samaniego, IEEE Trans Reliabil (1985) 69–72). For a given family of criterion functions, a variety of optimality results are obtained for systems of arbitrary order n. Approximations are developed and justified when the underlying component distribution is unknown. Assuming the availability of an auxiliary sample of N component failure times, the asymptotic theory of L‐estimators is adapted for the purpose of establishing the consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators of the expected ordered failure times of the n components of the systems under study. These results lead to the identification of ε‐optimal systems relative to the chosen criterion function. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2007  相似文献

We investigate the effect of increasing component commonality in an assemble-to-order system. Numerical investigation of two end products that share up to three components, and whose demands are identically distributed according to either the exponential or the geometric distribution, shows that increasing component commonality results in increasing marginal returns when the criteria are aggregate service level and aggregate stock requirement. For arbitrary end-product demands and general service measures, it is shown that the optimal holding cost for a given service level is concave in the level of commonality. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this article we apply perturbation analysis (PA), combined with conditional Monte Carlo, to obtain derivative estimators of the expected cost per period with respect to s and S, for a class of periodic review (s, S) inventory systems with full backlogging, linear holding and shortage costs, and where the arrivals of demands follow a renewal process. We first develop the general form of four different estimators of the gradient for the finite-horizon case, and prove that they are unbiased. We next consider the problem of implementing our estimators, and develop efficient methodologies for the infinite-horizon case. For the case of exponentially distributed demand interarrival times, we implement our estimators using a single sample path. Generally distributed interarrival times are modeled as phase-type distributions, and the implementation of this more general case requires a number of additional off-line simulations. The resulting estimators are still efficient and practical, provided that the number of phases is not too large. We conclude by reporting the results of simulation experiments. The results provide further validity of our methodology and also indicate that our estimators have very low variance. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
