Let X and Xτ denote the lifetime and the residual life at age τ of a system, respectively. X is said to be a NBUL random variable if Xτ is smaller than X in Laplace order, i.e., XτL X. We obtain some characterizations for this class of life distribution by means of the lifetime of a series system and the residual life at random time. We also discuss preservation properties for this class of life distribution under shock models. Finally, under the assumption that the lifetimes have the NBUL property, we make stochastic comparisons between some basic replacement policies. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this article we study the reliability importance of the components for the wide class of Markov chain imbeddable systems (MIS). Methods for the evaluation of Birnbaum importance are developed for a general MIS, and some generating function techniques are demonstrated for the special case of homogeneous MISs. As an application, the reliability ordering for the components of a k‐out‐of‐n and consecutive‐k‐out‐of‐n structure is examined in some detail. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new piece of equipment has been purchased in a lot of size m. Some of the items can be used in destructive testing before the item is put into use. Testing uncovers faults which can be removed from the remaining pieces of equipment in the lot. If t < m pieces of equipment are tested, then those that remain, m1 = mt, have reduced fault incidence and are more reliable than initially, but m1 may be too small to be useful, or than is desirable. In this paper models are studied to address this question: given the lot size m, how to optimize by choice of t the effectiveness of the pieces of equipment remaining after the test. The models used are simplistic and illustrative; they can be straightforwardly improved. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 44: 623–637, 1997  相似文献

The two inventory echelons under consideration are the depot, D, and k tender ships E1, …, Ek. The tender ships supply the demand for certain parts of operational boats (the customers). The statistical model assumes that the total monthly demands at the k tenders are stationary independent Poisson random variables, with unknown means λ1, …, λk. The stock levels on the tenders, at the heginning of each month, can be adjusted either by ordering more units from the depot, or by shipping bach to the depot an excess stock. There is no traffic of stock between tenders which is not via the depot. The lead time from the depot to the tenders is at most 1 month. The lead time for orders of the depot from the manufacturer is L months. The loss function due to erroneous decision js comprised of linear functions of the extra monthly stocks, and linear functions of shortages at the tenders and at the depot over the N months. A Bayes sequential decision process is set up for the optimal adjustment levels and orders of the two echelons. The Dynamic Programming recursive functions are given for a planning horizon of N months.  相似文献

Consider a reliability system consisting of n components. The failures and the repair completions of the components can occur only at positive integer-valued times k ϵ N++ ϵ (1, 2, …). At any time k ϵ N++ each component can be in one of two states: up (i.e., working) or down (i.e., failed and in repair). The system state is also either up or down and it depends on the states of the components through a coherent structure function τ. In this article we formulate mathematically the above model and we derive some of its properties. In particular, we identify conditions under which the first failure times of two such systems can be stochastically ordered. A variety of special cases is used in order to illustrate the applications of the derived properties of the model. Some instances in which the times of first failure have the NBU (new better than used) property are pointed out. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

It is well known that replacing several products by a single common product can reduce required safety stock levels due to the benefits of risk pooling. Recent research utilizing single‐period models has investigated the cost savings (or losses) from doing so. This paper uses a very general multiple‐period model, with general demand distributions, any number of products, and the objective of minimizing production, holding, and shortage costs. Two scenarios are considered—one that utilizes a common product and one that does not. Prior results utilizing single‐period models indicate that even if the common product is more expensive than the products it replaces, there are many circumstances under which it is still worthwhile to employ. Surprisingly, this paper will show that this is almost never the case in a multiple‐period model. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 46: 737–751, 1999  相似文献

Inventory control of products with finite lifetimes is important in many modern business organizations. It has been an important and difficult research subject. Here, we study the (s, S) continuous review model for items with an exponential random lifetime and a general renewal demand process through a Markov process. We derive a fundamental rate conservation theorem and show that all the other system performance measures can be obtained easily through the expected reorder cycle length. This leads to a simple expression for the total expected long run cost rate function in terms of the expected reorder cycle length. Subsequently, we derive formulas for computing the expected cycle lengths for the general renewal demand as well as for a large class of demands characterized by the phase type interdemand time distribution. We show analytically when the cost as a function of the reorder level is monotone, concave, or convex. We also show analytically that, depending on the behavior of the expected reorder cycle, the cost as a function of the order‐up level is either monotone increasing or unimodal. These analytical properties enable us to understand the problem and make the subsequent numerical optimization much easier. Numerical studies confirm and illustrate some of the analytical properties. The results also demonstrate the impact of various parameters on the optimal policy and the cost. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 46: 39–56, 1999  相似文献

Tolerance limits which control both tails of the normal distribution so that there is no more than a proportion β1 in one tail and no more than β2 in the other tail with probability γ may be computed for any size sample. They are computed from X? - k1S and X? - k2S, where X? and S are the usual sample mean and standard deviation and k1 and k2 are constants previously tabulated in Odeh and Owen [3]. The question addressed is, “Just how accurate are the coverages of these intervals (– Infin;, X?k1S) and (X? + k2S, ∞) for various size samples?” The question is answered in terms of how widely the coverage of each tail interval differs from the corresponding required content with a given confidence γ′.  相似文献

Various methods and criteria for comparing coherent systems are discussed. Theoretical results are derived for comparing systems of a given order when components are assumed to have independent and identically distributed lifetimes. All comparisons rely on the representation of a system's lifetime distribution as a function of the system's “signature,” that is, as a function of the vector p= (p1, … , pn), where pi is the probability that the system fails upon the occurrence of the ith component failure. Sufficient conditions are provided for the lifetime of one system to be larger than that of another system in three different senses: stochastic ordering, hazard rate ordering, and likelihood ratio ordering. Further, a new preservation theorem for hazard rate ordering is established. In the final section, the notion of system signature is used to examine a recently published conjecture regarding componentwise and systemwise redundancy. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this article, we study reliability properties of m‐consecutive‐k‐out‐of‐n: F systems with exchangeable components. We deduce exact formulae and recurrence relations for the signature of the system. Closed form expressions for the survival function and the lifetime distribution as a mixture of the distribution of order statistics are established as well. These representations facilitate the computation of several reliability characteristics of the system for a given exchangeable joint distribution or survival function. Finally, we provide signature‐based stochastic ordering results for the system's lifetime and investigate the IFR preservation property under the formulation of m‐consecutive‐k‐out‐of‐n: F systems. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article studies (nQ, r) inventory policies, under which the order quantity is restricted to be an integer multiple of a base lot size Q. Both Q and r are decision variables. Assuming the one-period expected holding and backorder cost function is unimodal, we develop an efficient algorithm to compute the optimal Q and r. The algorithm is facilitated by simple observations about the cost function and by tight upper bounds on the optimal Q. The total number of elementary operations required by the algorithm is linear in these upper bounds. By using the algorithm, we compare the performance of the optimal (nQ, r) policy with that of the optimal (s, S) policy through a numerical study, and our results show that the difference between them is small. Further analysis of the model shows that the cost performance of an (nQ, r) policy is insensitive to the choice of Q. These results establish that (nQ, r) models are potentially useful in many settings where quantized ordering is beneficial.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new model that generalizes the linear consecutive k‐out‐of‐r‐from‐n:F system to multistate case with multiple failure criteria. In this model (named linear multistate multiple sliding window system) the system consists of n linearly ordered multistate elements (MEs). Each ME can have different states: from complete failure up to perfect functioning. A performance rate is associated with each state. Several functions are defined for a set of integer numbers ρ in such a way that for each r ∈ ρ corresponding function fr produces negative values if the combination of performance rates of r consecutive MEs corresponds to the unacceptable state of the system. The system fails if at least one of functions fr for any r consecutive MEs for r ∈ ρ produces a negative value. An algorithm for system reliability evaluation is suggested which is based on an extended universal moment generating function. Examples of system reliability evaluation are presented. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2005.  相似文献

The coverage C of area targets by salvos of weapons generally varies randomly, because of random target location and weapon impact point fluctuations. A third source of variation appears when, instead of an area target, a multiple-element target is considered, consisting of m point targets distributed randomly and independently of one another around the target center. A multiple-integral expression is derived for the probability pk of killing exactly k target elements. It is shown that pk is a linear function of the higher moments, of the order k to m, of the area coverage C. More explicit expressions are derived for the case of two weapons and for circular-symmetric functions. Similar to well-known results for the expectation and variance of coverage of area targets, these expressions can be evaluated by numerical quadrature. Furthermore, the coverage problem in which all underlying functions are Gaussian can be completely solved in closed form. For such a problem, with two weapons, numerical results are presented. They show that the distribution of k can be approximated by a binomial distribution only if the target center and weapon impact point fluctuations are small.  相似文献

We study a class of new scheduling problems which involve types of teamwork tasks. Each teamwork task consists of several components, and requires a team of processors to complete, with each team member to process a particular component of the task. Once the processor completes its work on the task, it will be available immediately to work on the next task regardless of whether the other components of the last task have been completed or not. Thus, the processors in a team neither have to start, nor have to finish, at the same time as they process a task. A task is completed only when all of its components have been processed. The problem is to find an optimal schedule to process all tasks, under a given objective measure. We consider both deterministic and stochastic models. For the deterministic model, we find that the optimal schedule exhibits the pattern that all processors must adopt the same sequence to process the tasks, even under a general objective function GC = F(f1(C1), f2(C2), … , fn(Cn)), where fi(Ci) is a general, nondecreasing function of the completion time Ci of task i. We show that the optimal sequence to minimize the maximum cost MC = max fi(Ci) can be derived by a simple rule if there exists an order f1(t) ≤ … ≤ fn(t) for all t between the functions {fi(t)}. We further show that the optimal sequence to minimize the total cost TC = ∑ fi(Ci) can be constructed by a dynamic programming algorithm. For the stochastic model, we study three optimization criteria: (A) almost sure minimization; (B) stochastic ordering; and (C) expected cost minimization. For criterion (A), we show that the results for the corresponding deterministic model can be easily generalized. However, stochastic problems with criteria (B) and (C) become quite difficult. Conditions under which the optimal solutions can be found for these two criteria are derived. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2004  相似文献

Consider n jobs (J1, …, Jn), m working stations (M1, …, Mm) and λ linear resources (R1, …, Rλ). Job Ji consists of m operations (Oi1, …, Oim). Operation Oij requires Pk(i, j) units of resource Rk to be realized in an Mj. The availability of resource Rk and the ability of the working station Mh to consume resource Rk, vary over time. An operation involving more than one resource consumes them in constant proportions equal to those in which they are required. The order in which operations are realized is immaterial. We seek an allocation of the resources such that the schedule length is minimized. In this paper, polynomial algorithms are developed for several problems, while NP-hardness is demonstrated for several others. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper introduces an extension of the v. Neumann model of an expanding economy. In addition to the conventional nonnegative input and output matrices A1, B1 representing technology, two matrices A2, B2 represent socio-political evaluations and show that there exist solutions to the 4-matrix model. The proof is based on an extension of a constructive proof given by O. Morgenstern and G. L. Thompson. It is shown that this proof is valid only under an additional assumption. The transformation of v. Neumann models (taking consumption into account) into 1 or 2 games is shown and adds an additional condition to M. Morishima's model to guarantee a solution. The equivalence of the v. Neumann model to a maximization problem under a (efficiency) constraint is presented. It is shown that E. Malinvaud's maximality and efficiency criterion - if based on the same assumptions (model) - are equivalent and specify the assumptions which will make the MT-model efficient. The economic evaluation is considered to be of utmost importance.  相似文献

Consider a single-server exponential queueing loss system in which the arrival and service rates alternate between the paris (γ1, γ1), and (γ2, μ2), spending an exponential amount of time with rate i in (γi, μi), i = 1.2. It is shown that if all arrivals finding the server busy are lost, then the percentage of arrivals lost is a decreasing function of c. This is in line with a general conjecture of Ross to the effect that the “more nonstationary” a Poisson arrival process is, the greater the average customer delay (in infinite capacity models) or the greater the precentage of lost customers (in finite capacity models). We also study the limiting cases when c approaches 0 or infinity.  相似文献

This paper examines various models for maintenance of a machine operating subject to stochastic deterioration. Three alternative models are presented for the deterioration process. For each model, in addition to the replacement decision, the option exists of performing preventive maintenance. The effect of this maintenance is to “slow” the deterioration process. With an appropriate reward structure imposed on the processes, the models are formulated as continuous time Markov decision processes. the optimality criterion being the maximization of expected discounted reward earned over an infinite time horizon. For each model conditions are presented under which the optimal maintenance policy exhibits the following monotonic structure. First, there exists a control limit rule for replacement. That is, there exists a number i* such that if the state of machine deterioration exceeds i* the optimal policy replaces the machine by a new machine. Secondly, prior to replacement the optimal level of preventive maintenance is a nonincreasing function of the state of machine deterioration. The conditions which guarantee this result have a cost/benefit interpretation.  相似文献

This article presents another inventory model for situations in which, during the stockout period, a fraction b of the demand is backordered and the remaining fraction 1 ? b is lost. By defining a time-proportional backorder cost and a fixed penalty cost per unit lost, a unimodal objective function representing the average annual cost of operating the inventory system is obtained. The optimal operating policy variables are calculated directly.  相似文献

We consider a system composed of k components, each of which is subject to failure if temperature is above a critical level. The failure of one component causes the failure of the system as a whole (a serially connected system). If zi is the critical temperature of the ith component then z* = min{zi: i = 1,2,…, k} is the critical level of the system. The components may be tested individually at different temperature levels, if the temperature is below the critical level the cost is $1, otherwise the test is destructive and the cost is m > 1 dollars. The purpose of this article is to construct, under a budgetary constraint, an efficient (in a minmax sense) testing procedure which will locate the critical level of the system with maximal accuracy.  相似文献
