Suppose X1,X2, ?,Xn is a random sample of size n from a continuous distribution function F(x) and let X1,n, ≦ X2,n ≦ ? ≦ Xn,n be the corresponding order statistics. We define the jth-order gap gi,j as gi,j = Xi+j,n ? Xi,n, 1 ≦ i < n, 1 ≦ jn ? i. In this article characterizations of the exponential distribution are given by considering the distributional properties of gk,n-k, 1 ≦ kn.  相似文献

The problem of determining a vector that places a system in a state of equilibrium is studied with the aid of mathematical programming. The approach derives from the logical equivalence between the general equilibrium problem and the complementarity problem, the latter being explicitly concerned with finding a point in the set S = {x: < x, g(x)> = 0, g(x) ≦ 0, x ≧ 0}. An associated nonconvex program, min{? < x, g(x) > : g(x) ≦ 0, x ≧ 0}, is proposed whose solution set coincides with S. When the excess demand function g(x) meets certain separability conditions, equilibrium solutions are obtained by using an established branch and bound algorithm. Because the best upper bound is known at the outset, an independent check for convergence can be made at each iteration of the algorithm, thereby greatly increasing its efficiency. A number of examples drawn from economic and network theory are presented in order to demonstrate the computational aspects of the approach. The results appear promising for a wide range of problem sizes and types, with solutions occurring in a relatively small number of iterations.  相似文献

For each n, X1(n),…, Xn(n) are independent and identically distributed random variables, each with cumulative distribution function F(x) which is known to be absolutely continuous but is otherwise unknown. The problem is to test the hypothesis that \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ F(x) = G\left( {{\textstyle{{x - \theta _1 } \over {\theta _2 }}}} \right) $\end{document}, where the cumulative distribution function Gx is completely specified and satisfies certain regularity conditions, and the parameters θ1, θ2 are unknown and unspecified, except that the scale parameter θ2, is positive. Y1 (n) ≦ Y2 (n) ≦ … ≦ Yn (n)are the ordered values of X1(n),…, Xn(n). A test based on a certain subset of {Yi(n)} is proposed, is shown to have asymptotically a normal distribution when the hypothesis is true, and is shown to be consistent against all alternatives satisfying a mild regularity condition.  相似文献

We study a deterministic two‐machine flowshop scheduling problem with an assumption that one of the two machines is not available in a specified time period. This period can be due to a breakdown, preventive maintenance, or processing unfinished jobs from a previous planning horizon. The problem is known to be NP‐hard. Pseudopolynomial dynamic programming algorithms and heuristics with worst case error bounds are given in the literature to solve the problem. They are different for the cases when the unavailability interval is for the first or second machine. The existence of a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) was formulated as an open conjecture in the literature. In this paper, we show that the two cases of the problem under study are equivalent to similar partition type problems. Then we derive a generic FPTAS for the latter problems with O(n54) time complexity. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2004.  相似文献

Most machine scheduling models assume that the machines are available all of the time. However, in most realistic situations, machines need to be maintained and hence may become unavailable during certain periods. In this paper, we study the problem of processing a set of n jobs on m parallel machines where each machine must be maintained once during the planning horizon. Our objective is to schedule jobs and maintenance activities so that the total weighted completion time of jobs is minimized. Two cases are studied in this paper. In the first case, there are sufficient resources so that different machines can be maintained simultaneously if necessary. In the second case, only one machine can be maintained at any given time. In this paper, we first show that, even when all jobs have the same weight, both cases of the problem are NP-hard. We then propose branch and bound algorithms based on the column generation approach for solving both cases of the problem. Our algorithms are capable of optimally solving medium sized problems within a reasonable computational time. We note that the general problem where at most j machines, 1 ≤ jm, can be maintained simultaneously, can be solved similarly by the column generation approach proposed in this paper. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We deal with the problem of minimizing makespan on a single batch processing machine. In this problem, each job has both processing time and size (capacity requirement). The batch processing machine can process a number of jobs simultaneously as long as the total size of these jobs being processed does not exceed the machine capacity. The processing time of a batch is just the processing time of the longest job in the batch. An approximation algorithm with worst‐case ratio 3/2 is given for the version where the processing times of large jobs (with sizes greater than 1/2) are not less than those of small jobs (with sizes not greater than 1/2). This result is the best possible unless P = NP. For the general case, we propose an approximation algorithm with worst‐case ratio 7/4. A number of heuristics by Uzosy are also analyzed and compared. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 48: 226–240, 2001  相似文献

A large population of independent identical units having finite mean lifetime T is observed. From the history A(y) of cumulative arrivals and the history B(y) of cumulative removals in the interval 0 ≦ y ≦ τ one must predict at time τ the desired T . Two lifetime predictors X(τ) and Y(τ) and related simple predictors obtained from A(y) and B(y) are shown to converge to T with a rate of convergence dependent on the structure of the failure rate function of the units. This dependence is studied theoretically and numerically.  相似文献

This article studies a min‐max path cover problem, which is to determine a set of paths for k capacitated vehicles to service all the customers in a given weighted graph so that the largest path cost is minimized. The problem has wide applications in vehicle routing, especially when the minimization of the latest service completion time is a critical performance measure. We have analyzed four typical variants of this problem, where the vehicles have either unlimited or limited capacities, and they start from either a given depot or any depot of a given depot set. We have developed approximation algorithms for these four variants, which achieve approximation ratios of max{3 ‐ 2/k,2}, 5, max{5 ‐ 2/k,4}, and 7, respectively. We have also analyzed the approximation hardness of these variants by showing that, unless P = NP , it is impossible for them to achieve approximation ratios less than 4/3, 3/2, 3/2, and 2, respectively. We have further extended the techniques and results developed for this problem to other min‐max vehicle routing problems.© 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2010  相似文献

The problem treated here involves a mixed fleet of vehicles comprising two types of vehicles: K1 tanker-type vehicles capable of refueling themselves and other vehicles, and K2 nontanker vehicles incapable of refueling. The two groups of vehicles have different fuel capacities as well as different fuel consumption rates. The problem is to find the tanker refueling sequence that maximizes the range attainable for the K2 nontankers. A tanker refueling sequence is a partition of the tankers into m subsets (2 ≤ mK1). A given sequence of the partition provides a realization of the number of tankers participating in each successive refueling operation. The problem is first formulated as a nonlinear mixed-integer program and reduced to a linear program for a fixed sequence which may be solved by a simple recursive procedure. It is proven that a “unit refueling sequence” composed of one tanker refueling at each of K1 refueling operations is optimal. In addition, the problem of designing the “minimum fleet” (minimum number of tankers) required for a given set of K2 nontankers to attain maximal range is resolved. Also studied are extensions to the problem with a constraint on the number of refueling operations, different nontanker recovery base geometry, and refueling on the return trip.  相似文献

The paper discusses mathematical properties of the well-known Bellman-Johnson 3 × n sequencing problem. Optimal rules for some special cases are developed. For the case min Bi ≥ maxAj we find an optimal sequence of the 2 × n problem for machines B and C and move one item to the front of the sequence to minimize (7); when min Bi ≥ max Cj we solve a 2 × n problem for machines A and B and move one item to the end of the optimal sequence so as to minimize (9). There is also given a sufficient optimality condition for a solution obtained by Johnson's approximate method. This explains why this method so often produces an optimal solution.  相似文献

For many combinatorial optimization problems that are NP-hard, a number of special cases exist that can be solved in polynomial time. This paper addresses the issue of solving one such problem, the well-known m-median problem with mutual communication (MMMC), by exploiting polynomially solvable special cases of the problem. For MMMC, a dependency graph is defined that characterizes the structure of the interactions between decision variables. A Lagrangian decomposition scheme is proposed that partitions the problem into two or more subproblems, each having the same structure as the original problem, but with simpler dependency graphs. The dual problems are solved using subgradient or multiplier adjustment methods. An efficient method of adjusting the multiplier values is given. Computational results are reported that show the method to be quite effective. In addition, applications of the approach to other difficult location problems is discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 45: 791–815, 1998  相似文献

A method of life testing is proposed which combines both ordinary and accelerated life-testing procedures. It is assumed that an item can be tested either in a standard environment or under stress. The amount of stress is fixed in advance and is the same for all items to be tested However, the time x at which an item on lest is taken out of the standard environment and put under stress can be chosen by the experimenter subject to a given cost structure. When an item is put under stress its lifetime is changed by the factor α. Let the random variable T denote the lifetime of an item in the standard environment, and let γ denote its lifetime under the partially accelerated test procedure just described. Then Y = T if Tx, and Y = x + α (T > x) if T > x. It is assumed that T has an exponential distribution with parameter θ. The estimation of θ and α and the optimal design of a partially accelerated life test are studied in the framework of Bayesian decision theory.  相似文献

For a given set S of nonnegative integers the partitioning problem asks for a partition of S into two disjoint subsets S1 and S2 such that the sum of elements in S1 is equal to the sum of elements in S2. If additionally two elements (the kernels) r1, r2S are given which must not be assigned to the same set Si, we get the partitioning problem with kernels. For these NP‐complete problems the authors present two compound algorithms which consist both of three linear greedylike algorithms running independently. It is shown that the worst‐case performance of the heuristic for the ordinary partitioning problem is 12/11, while the second procedure for partitioning with kernels has a bound of 8/7. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We consider a multi‐stage inventory system composed of a single warehouse that receives a single product from a single supplier and replenishes the inventory of n retailers through direct shipments. Fixed costs are incurred for each truck dispatched and all trucks have the same capacity limit. Costs are stationary, or more generally monotone as in Lippman (Management Sci 16, 1969, 118–138). Demands for the n retailers over a planning horizon of T periods are given. The objective is to find the shipment quantities over the planning horizon to satisfy all demands at minimum system‐wide inventory and transportation costs without backlogging. Using the structural properties of optimal solutions, we develop (1) an O(T2) algorithm for the single‐stage dynamic lot sizing problem; (2) an O(T3) algorithm for the case of a single‐warehouse single‐retailer system; and (3) a nested shortest‐path algorithm for the single‐warehouse multi‐retailer problem that runs in polynomial time for a given number of retailers. To overcome the computational burden when the number of retailers is large, we propose aggregated and disaggregated Lagrangian decomposition methods that make use of the structural properties and the efficient single‐stage algorithm. Computational experiments show the effectiveness of these algorithms and the gains associated with coordinated versus decentralized systems. Finally, we show that the decentralized solution is asymptotically optimal. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 2009  相似文献

The first problem considered in this paper is concerned with the assembly of independent components into parallel systems so as to maximize the expected number of systems that perform satisfactorily. Associated with each component is a probability of it performing successfully. It is shown that an optimal assembly is obtained if the reliability of each assembled system can be made equal. If such equality is not attainable, then bounds are given so that the maximum expected number of systems that perform satisfactorily will lie within these stated bounds; the bounds being a function of an arbitrarily chosen assembly. An improvement algorithm is also presented. A second problem treated is concerned with the optimal design of a system. Instead of assembling given units, there is an opportunity to “control” their quality, i.e., the manufacturer is able to fix the probability, p, of a unit performing successfully. However, his resources, are limited so that a constraint is imposed on these probabilities. For (1) series systems, (2) parallel systems, and (3) k out of n systems, results are obtained for finding the optimal p's which maximize the reliability of a single system, and which maximize the expected number of systems that perform satisfactorily out of a total assembly of J systems.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling N jobs on M parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum earliness or tardiness cost incurred for each of the jobs. Earliness and tardiness costs are given by general (but job-independent) functions of the amount of time a job is completed prior to or after a common due date. We show that in problems with a nonrestrictive due date, the problem decomposes into two parts. Each of the M longest jobs is assigned to a different machine, and all other jobs are assigned to the machines so as to minimize their makespan. With these assignments, the individual scheduling problems for each of the machines are simple to solve. We demonstrate that several simple heuristics of low complexity, based on this characterization, are asymptotically optimal under mild probabilistic conditions. We develop attractive worst-case bounds for them. We also develop a simple closed-form lower bound for the minimum cost value. The bound is asymptotically accurate under the same probabilistic conditions. In the case where the due date is restrictive, the problem is more complex only in the sense that the set of initial jobs on the machines is not easily characterized. However, we extend our heuristics and lower bounds to this general case as well. Numerical studies exhibit that these heuristics perform excellently even for small- or moderate-size problems both in the restrictive and nonrestrictive due-date case. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The problem considered involves the assignment of n facilities to n specified locations. Each facility has a given nonnegative flow from each of the other facilities. The objective is to minimize the sum of transportation costs. Assume these n locations are given as points on a two-dimensional plane and transportation costs are proportional to weighted rectangular distances. Then the problem is formulated as a binary mixed integer program. The number of integer variables (all binary) involved equals the number of facilities squared. Without increasing the number of integer variables, the formulation is extended to include “site costs” Computational results of the formulation are presented.  相似文献

In two earlier papers, we proposed algorithms for finding an optimal sequence of processing m items on q machines, by finding a minimaximal path in a disjunctive network. In a third paper, this latter model was generalized (from 2-state to 3-state disjunctive graphs) so as to accommodate project scheduling with resource constraints. In this paper, we discuss another algorithm for the (2-state) disjunctive network problem, closely related to those mentioned above. To make the paper self-contained, section 2 briefly describes the problem. Section 3 introduces a class of constraints which forms the basis of the algorithm discussed in section 4. The constraints have only 1, ?1, or 0 as coefficients on the left-hand side, integers on the right-hand side. The whole procedure of generating these constraints and finding a feasible solution whenever a new constraint is added, can be interpreted (section 5) as a process of generating a graph with degree-constraints on its nodes, and then finding a subgraph satisfying the degree-constraints. The nodes of the graph are generated by solving a critical-path-problem, the feasible subgraphs are found by implicit enumeration.  相似文献

We present a branch and bound algorithm to solve mathematical programming problems of the form: Find x =|(x1,…xn) to minimize Σ?i0(x1) subject to x?G, l≦x≦L and Σ?i0(x1)≦0, j=1,…,m. With l=(l1,…,ln) and L=(L1,…,Ln), each ?ij is assumed to be lower aemicontinuous and piecewise convex on the finite interval [li.Li]. G is assumed to be a closed convex set. The algorithm solves a finite sequence of convex programming problems; these correspond to successive partitions of the set C={x|l ≦ x ≦L} on the bahis of the piecewise convexity of the problem functions ?ij. Computational considerations are discussed, and an illustrative example is presented.  相似文献

Scheduling a set of n jobs on a single machine so as to minimize the completion time variance is a well‐known NP‐hard problem. In this paper, we propose a sequence, which can be constructed in O(n log n) time, as a solution for the problem. Our primary concern is to establish the asymptotical optimality of the sequence within the framework of probabilistic analysis. Our main result is that, when the processing times are randomly and independently drawn from the same uniform distribution, the sequence is asymptotically optimal in the sense that its relative error converges to zero in probability as n increases. Other theoretical results are also derived, including: (i) When the processing times follow a symmetric structure, the problem has 2⌊(n−1)/2⌋ optimal sequences, which include our proposed sequence and other heuristic sequences suggested in the literature; and (ii) when these 2⌊(n−1)/2⌋ sequences are used as approximate solutions for a general problem, our proposed sequence yields the best approximation (in an average sense) while another sequence, which is commonly believed to be a good approximation in the literature, is interestingly the worst. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
