Puzzle‐based storage systems

We introduce and develop models for a physical goods storage system based on the 15‐puzzle, a classic children's game in which 15 numbered tiles slide within a 4 × 4 grid. The objective of the game is to arrange the tiles in numerical sequence, starting from a random arrangement. For our purposes, the tiles represent totes, pallets, or even containers that must be stored very densely, and the objective is to maneuver items to an input–output point for retrieval or processing. We develop analytical results for storage configurations having a single empty location (as in the game) and experimental results for configurations with multiple empty locations. Designs with many empty locations can be made to form aisles, allowing us to compare puzzle‐based designs with traditional aisle‐based designs found in warehousing systems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Into the black box? Technology sharing in major arms transfers and beyond

From the recipients’ perspective, arms transfers have, through the use of offsets, technology transfers, and industrial participation, become an opportunity to receive not only advanced weapons, but also technologies not otherwise available. How important are friendly relations for securing a military export order? To what extent do buyers demand advanced military or commercial technology and how are these demands accepted by the supplier? How does this influence smaller producers in relation to major producers? These questions are addressed by studying (a) the Joint Strike Fighter/F-35 by Lockheed Martin, USA, and the JAS-39 Gripen aircraft by Saab, Sweden, (b) the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft competition in India for 126 combat aircraft, and (c) the Indian offset policy. In the final section, some long-term consequences are discussed.     

F—K理论在堆积固体自燃火灾调查中的应用

堆积固体自燃火灾是常见多发火灾，由于其规模庞大、着火延迟期长等特点，难以进行全尺寸的模拟实验，为火灾预防和调查工作带来了一定的难度。基于F—K（Frank—Kamenetskii）理论，将小规模实验结果外推，从而预测或判断一定尺寸的堆积固体在一定的环境温度下自燃起火的危险性。

Investigating the Desirability of Navy Aircraft Service Life Extension Programs

Building on prior work on optimal replacement of aging aircraft, this paper presents three methodologies to evaluate prospective aviation Service Life Extension Programs (SLEPs) and applies these methodologies to US Navy F/A-18E/F data. While considerable uncertainty remains as to the values of key parameters (e.g. the cost of F/A-18E/F SLEPs), the preponderance of the evidence available at this juncture favors undertaking SLEPs on F/A-18E/Fs rather than replacing them with new Joint Strike Fighters.     

美军装备采办中需求牵引与技术推动融合研究——以F-22战机为例

通过分析F-22项目中需求牵引和技术推动两大动力,指出美军的体制机制保障动力融合,采办文件明确动力融合,机构设置促使动力融合。总结出我国武器装备发展一是系统构建、综合权衡,二是瞄准实战、滚动评估,三是紧跟前沿、严控陷阱。     

激光远场光斑检测中信号采集与转贮技术研究

设计了16×16面阵靶板多路探测信号的采集与转贮系统电路,用于信号采集及向上位机的传送。系统采用W 77E58为采集电路的CPU,以FT245BM为核心构成USB接口电路,实现了256路信号的快速采集与转贮,较好地解决了对多路探测器实时快速采集和向上位机传送的问题,从而使激光远场光斑测试系统能够实时测量远场光斑的能量分布和变化情况。     

New Light on the Simpson of York Gun

Abstract

New evidence is examined relating to the making of the Royal Armouries exquisitely decorated sporting gun by William Simpson of York, which has been said to be the finest English gun in existence. Simpson had moved from London to York by 1837 and it has been suggested that this gun was made by him for William Constable (who is known to have owned it) of Burton Constable Hall, near Hull, and indeed, that elements of its decoration were made to match that found on other items made for the Hall. However, it is shown that these apparent links are matters of chance and that this wonderful gun was, in fact, made as a marketing exercise to help Simpson establish himself in York. Advertisements in the York Courant in the summer of 1738 show that Simpson offered it as a raffle prize!
