Given a set of jobs, a processing time and a weight for each job, several parallel and identical machines, and a common due date that is not too early to constrain the scheduling decision, we want to find an optimal job schedule so as to minimize the maximum weighted absolute lateness. We show that this problem is NP-complete even for the single-machine case, and is strongly NP-complete for the general case. We present a polynomial time heuristic for this problem and analyze its worst-case performance. Empirical testing of the heuristic is reported, and the results suggest that the performance is asymptotically optimal as the number of jobs tends to infinity. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We investigate the solvability of two single‐machine scheduling problems when the objective is to identify among all job subsets with cardinality k,1≤kn, the one that has the minimum objective function value. For the single‐machine minimum maximum lateness problem, we conclude that the problem is solvable in O(n2) time using the proposed REMOVE algorithm. This algorithm can also be used as an alternative to Moore's algorithm to solve the minimum number of tardy jobs problem by actually solving the hierarchical problem in which the objective is to minimize the maximum lateness subject to the minimum number of tardy jobs. We then show that the REMOVE algorithm cannot be used to solve the general case of the single‐machine total‐weighted completion time problem; we derive sufficient conditions among the job parameters so that the total weighted completion time problem becomes solvable in O(n2) time. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Kanet addressed the problem of scheduling n jobs on one machine so as to minimize the sum of absolute lateness under a restrictive assumption on their common due date. This article extends the results to the problem of scheduling n jobs on m parallel identical processors in order to minimize the sum of absolute lateness. Also, a heuristic algorithm for a more general version with no restriction on the common due date, for the problem of n-job single-machine scheduling is presented and its performance is reported.  相似文献

We examine a class of single-machine scheduling problems with sequence-dependent setup times that arise in the context of semiconductor test operations. We present heuristics for the problems of minimizing maximum lateness with dynamic arrivals and minimizing number of tardy jobs. We exploit special problem structure to derive worst-case error bounds. The special problem structure also enables us to derive dynamic programming procedures for the problems where all jobs are available simultaneously.  相似文献

This paper examines heuristic solution procedures for scheduling jobs on a single machine to minimize the maximum lateness in the presence of setup times between different job families. It reviews the state of knowledge about the solution of this problem, which is known to be difficult to solve in general, and examines natural solution approaches derived from some of the underlying theory. The emphasis is on the design and computational evaluation of new heuristic procedures. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 46: 978–991, 1999  相似文献

The majority of scheduling literature assumes that the machines are available at all times. In this paper, we study single machine scheduling problems where the machine maintenance must be performed within certain intervals and hence the machine is not available during the maintenance periods. We also assume that if a job is not processed to completion before the machine is stopped for maintenance, an additional setup is necessary when the processing is resumed. Our purpose is to schedule the maintenance and jobs to minimize some performance measures. The objective functions that we consider are minimizing the total weighted job completion times and minimizing the maximum lateness. In both cases, maintenance must be performed within a fixed period T, and the time for the maintenance is a decision variable. In this paper, we study two scenarios concerning the planning horizon. First, we show that, when the planning horizon is long in relation to T, the problem with either objective function is NP-complete, and we present pseudopolynomial time dynamic programming algorithms for both objective functions. In the second scenario, the planning horizon is short in relation to T. However, part of the period T may have elapsed before we schedule any jobs in this planning horizon, and the remaining time before the maintenance is shorter than the current planning horizon. Hence we must schedule one maintenance in this planning horizon. We show that the problem of minimizing the total weighted completion times in this scenario is NP-complete, while the shortest processing time (SPT) rule and the earliest due date (EDD) rule are optimal for the total completion time problem and the maximum lateness problem respectively. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article concerns the scheduling of n jobs around a common due date, so as to minimize the average total earliness plus total lateness of the jobs. Optimality conditions for the problem are developed, based on its equivalence to an easy scheduling problem. It seems that this problem inherently has a huge number of optimal solutions and an algorithm is developed to find many of them. The model is extended to allow for the availability of multiple parallel processors and an efficient algorithm is developed for that problem. In this more general case also, the algorithm permits great flexibility in finding an optimal schedule.  相似文献

We study two‐agent scheduling on a single sequential and compatible batching machine in which jobs in each batch are processed sequentially and compatibility means that jobs of distinct agents can be processed in a common batch. A fixed setup time is required before each batch is started. Each agent seeks to optimize some scheduling criterion that depends on the completion times of its own jobs only. We consider several scheduling problems arising from different combinations of some regular scheduling criteria, including the maximum cost (embracing lateness and makespan as its special cases), the total completion time, and the (weighted) number of tardy jobs. Our goal is to find an optimal schedule that minimizes the objective value of one agent, subject to an upper bound on the objective value of the other agent. For each problem under consideration, we provide either a polynomial‐time or a pseudo‐polynomial‐time algorithm to solve it. We also devise a fully polynomial‐time approximation scheme when both agents’ scheduling criteria are the weighted number of tardy jobs.  相似文献

Recent efforts to improve lower bounds in implicit enumeration algorithms for the general (n/m/G/Fmax) sequencing problem have been directed to the solution of an auxiliary single machine problem that results from the relaxation of some of the interference constraints. We develop an algorithm that obtains optimal and near optimal solutions for this relaxed problem with relatively little computational effort. We report on computational results achieved when this method is used to obtain lower bounds for the general problem. Finally, we show the equivalence of this problem to a single machine sequencing problem with earliest start and due date constraints where the objective is to minimize the maximum lateness.  相似文献

This article considers batch scheduling with centralized and decentralized decisions. The context of our study is concurrent open shop scheduling where the jobs are to be processed on a set of independent dedicated machines, which process designated operations of the jobs in batches. The batching policy across the machines can be centralized or decentralized. We study such scheduling problems with the objectives of minimizing the maximum lateness, weighted number of tardy jobs, and total weighted completion time, when the job sequence is determined in advance. We present polynomial time dynamic programming algorithms for some cases of these problems and pseudo‐polynomial time algorithms for some problems that are NP‐hard in the ordinary sense. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A single machine sequencing problem is considered in which there are ready-time and due-date constraints on jobs and vacation constraints on the machine. Each vacation has fixed starting and finish time and no preemption is allowed for the jobs. The objective is to minimize maximum lateness. An intriguing feature of this formulation is that it allows sequencing in disconnected time windows. A relaxation of the problem is obtained by modeling the vacations as a set of jobs with flexible ready-times and artificial due-dates and a branch and bound algorithm is developed for the problem. In the algorithm, the search is not only guided by the bounds but also by a careful manipulation of the artificial due-dates. Consequently; while searching in the relaxed solution space, solutions of the original problem are implicitly enumerated. Computational results indicate that the algorithm can satisfactorily solve problems with multiple vacations.  相似文献

The exact expression is derived for the average stationary cost of a (Q,R) inventory system with lost sales, unit Poisson demands, Erlang-distributed lead times, fixed order cost, fixed cost per unit lost sale, linear holding cost per unit time, and a maximum of one order outstanding. Explicit expressions for the state probabilities and a fast method of calculating them are obtained for the case of Q greater than R. Exponential lead times are analyzed as a special case. A simple cyclic coordinate search procedure is used to locate the minimum cost policy. Examples of the effect of lead time variability on costs are given.  相似文献

In this paper we present an improved branch and bound algorithm for the vertex coloring problem. The idea is to try to extend the coloring of a maximum clique to its adjacent vertices. If this succeeds, its successive neighbors are considered; in case of failure (i.e., in the case the initial colors are not sufficient), working on the subgraph induced by the maximum clique and its neighborhood, the lower bound is improved by seeking for an optimal coloring of this subgraph by branch and bound. The process is repeated iteratively until the whole graph is examined. The iterative scheme exploits a further lower bound obtained by integrating a simple algorithm into the maximum clique search, and a new method to compute upper bounds on subgraphs. Furthermore, a new branching rule and a method for the selection of the initial maximum clique are presented. Extensive computational results and comparisons with existing exact coloring algorithms on random graphs and benchmarks are given. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In scheduling problems with two competing agents, each one of the agents has his own set of jobs to be processed and his own objective function, and both share a common processor. In the single‐machine problem studied in this article, the goal is to find a joint schedule that minimizes the total deviation of the job completion times of the first agent from a common due‐date, subject to an upper bound on the maximum deviation of job completion times of the second agent. The problem is shown to be NP‐hard even for a nonrestrictive due‐date, and a pseudopolynomial dynamic program is introduced and tested numerically. For the case of a restrictive due‐date (a sufficiently small due‐date that may restrict the number of early jobs), a faster pseudopolynomial dynamic program is presented. We also study the multiagent case, which is proved to be strongly NP‐hard. A simple heuristic for this case is introduced, which is tested numerically against a lower bound, obtained by extending the dynamic programming algorithm. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider the problem of scheduling N jobs on M parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum earliness or tardiness cost incurred for each of the jobs. Earliness and tardiness costs are given by general (but job-independent) functions of the amount of time a job is completed prior to or after a common due date. We show that in problems with a nonrestrictive due date, the problem decomposes into two parts. Each of the M longest jobs is assigned to a different machine, and all other jobs are assigned to the machines so as to minimize their makespan. With these assignments, the individual scheduling problems for each of the machines are simple to solve. We demonstrate that several simple heuristics of low complexity, based on this characterization, are asymptotically optimal under mild probabilistic conditions. We develop attractive worst-case bounds for them. We also develop a simple closed-form lower bound for the minimum cost value. The bound is asymptotically accurate under the same probabilistic conditions. In the case where the due date is restrictive, the problem is more complex only in the sense that the set of initial jobs on the machines is not easily characterized. However, we extend our heuristics and lower bounds to this general case as well. Numerical studies exhibit that these heuristics perform excellently even for small- or moderate-size problems both in the restrictive and nonrestrictive due-date case. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We study a problem of scheduling products on the same facility, which is motivated by a car paint shop. Items of the same product are identical. Operations on the items are performed sequentially in batches, where each batch is a set of operations on the same product. Some of the produced items are of the required good quality and some items can be defective. Defectiveness of an item is determined by a given simulated function of its product, its preceding product, and the position of its operation in the batch. Defective items are kept in a buffer of a limited capacity, and they are then remanufactured at the same facility. A minimum waiting time exists for any defective item before its remanufacturing can commence. Each product has a sequence independent setup time which precedes its first operation or its operation following an operation of another product. A due date is given for each product such that all items of the same product have the same due date and the objective is to find a schedule which minimizes maximum lateness of product completion times with respect to their due dates. The problem is proved NP‐hard in the strong sense, and a heuristic Group Technology (GT) solution approach is suggested and analyzed. The results justify application of the GT approach to scheduling real car paint shops with buffered rework. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 61: 458–471, 2014  相似文献

In this paper we consider n jobs and a number of machines in parallel. The machines are identical and subject to breakdown and repair. The number may therefore vary over time and is at time t equal to m(t). Preemptions are allowed. We consider three objectives, namely, the total completion time, ∑ Cj, the makespan Cmax, and the maximum lateness Lmax. We study the conditions on m(t) under which various rules minimize the objective functions under consideration. We analyze cases when the jobs have deadlines to meet and when the jobs are subject to precedence constraints. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2004.  相似文献

We consider the problem of designing a contract to maximize the supplier's profit in a one‐supplier–one‐buyer relationship for a short‐life‐cycle product. Demand for the finished product is stochastic and price‐sensitive, and only its probability distribution is known when the supply contract is written. When the supplier has complete information on the marginal cost of the buyer, we show that several simple contracts can induce the buyer to choose order quantity that attains the single firm profit maximizing solution, resulting in the maximum possible profit for the supplier. When the marginal cost of the buyer is private information, we show that it is no longer possible to achieve the single firm solution. In this case, the optimal order quantity is always smaller while the optimal sale price of the finished product is higher than the single firm solution. The supplier's profit is lowered while that of the buyer is improved. Moreover, a buyer who has a lower marginal cost will extract more profit from the supplier. Under the optimal contract, the supplier employs a cutoff level policy on the buyer's marginal cost to determine whether the buyer should be induced to sign the contract. We characterize the optimal cutoff level and show how it depends on the parameters of the problem. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 48: 41–64, 2001  相似文献

Consider the problem of scheduling two products on a single machine or through two machines in series when demand is constant and there is a changeover cost between runs of different products on the same machine. As well as setting batch sizes, it is assumed that the production scheduler can choose the production rate for each product, provided an upper bound is not exceeded. This is equivalent to permitting distributed inserted idle time over the production run. It is shown that characteristic of the optimum schedule is that there is no idle time concentrated between runs; it is all distributed over the run. If the inventory charge is based on average inventory then one product is always produced at maximum rate on the bottleneck stage; however, if there is an inventory constraint based on maximum inventory then in the single-stage case it can occur that neither product is produced at maximum rate.  相似文献
