An economic two-stage screening procedure based on a dichotomous performance variable T and a continuous screening variable X is proposed. X is measured first to decide whether an item should be accepted, rejected, or additional observations should be taken. If no terminal decision is reached, T is then observed to classify the undecided items. Two models are considered; (i) the logistic model, where P(T = 1|X = x) is assumed to be a logistic function of x, and (ii) the normal model, where X given T is assumed to be normally distributed. A simple economic model based on inspection and misclassification costs is constructed. Optimal cutoff values on the screening variable are obtained by minimizing the expected cost subject to the constraint that the average outgoing quality attains a pre-specified level. Renewal theory is used to study the effectiveness of a class of continuous sampling plans first introduced by Dodge. This approach provides a simple way of viewing and computing the long-run Average Outgoing Quality (AOQ) and its maximum AOQL. More importantly, it is used to study the average outgoing quality in a short production run through an approximation formula AOQ*(t). Formulas for AOQ and AOQ*(t) are provided. By simulation, it is found that AOQ*(t) is sufficiently accurate in situations corresponding to actual practice.  相似文献

This paper studies production planning of manufacturing systems of unreliable machines in tandem. The manufacturing system considered here produces one type of product. The demand is assumed to be a Poisson process and the processing time for one unit of product in each machine is exponentially distributed. A broken machine is subject to a sequence of repairing processes. The up time and the repairing time in each phase are assumed to be exponentially distributed. We study the manufacturing system by considering each machine as an individual system with stochastic supply and demand. The Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) is applied to model the process of supply. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. We employ (s, S) policy as production control. Fast algorithms are presented to solve the average running costs of the machine system for a given (s, S) policy and hence the approximated optimal (s, S) policy. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We consider a multi‐stage inventory system composed of a single warehouse that receives a single product from a single supplier and replenishes the inventory of n retailers through direct shipments. Fixed costs are incurred for each truck dispatched and all trucks have the same capacity limit. Costs are stationary, or more generally monotone as in Lippman (Management Sci 16, 1969, 118–138). Demands for the n retailers over a planning horizon of T periods are given. The objective is to find the shipment quantities over the planning horizon to satisfy all demands at minimum system‐wide inventory and transportation costs without backlogging. Using the structural properties of optimal solutions, we develop (1) an O(T2) algorithm for the single‐stage dynamic lot sizing problem; (2) an O(T3) algorithm for the case of a single‐warehouse single‐retailer system; and (3) a nested shortest‐path algorithm for the single‐warehouse multi‐retailer problem that runs in polynomial time for a given number of retailers. To overcome the computational burden when the number of retailers is large, we propose aggregated and disaggregated Lagrangian decomposition methods that make use of the structural properties and the efficient single‐stage algorithm. Computational experiments show the effectiveness of these algorithms and the gains associated with coordinated versus decentralized systems. Military Standard 105D has been almost universally adopted by government and private consumers for the lot-by-lot sampling inspection of product which may be inspected on a dichotomoun basis The plan specifies, for each lot size, a random sample size and set of acceptance numbers (maximum allowable number of defectives in each sample). The acceptance numbers are based upon the binomial distribution and depend upon the quality required by the purchaser. Where several consecutive lots are submitted, a shift to less severe (“reduced”) inspection or more severe (“tightened”) inspection is specified when the ongoing quality is very high or low. Further experience permits a return to normal sampling from either of these states This paper examines the long range costs of such a sampling scheme. The three inspection types are considered as three distinct Markov chains, with periodic transitions from chain to chain. The expected sample size and the expected proportion of rejected product are determined as a function of the two parameters under control of the manufacturer, lot size and product quality. Some numerical examples are given which illustrate how to compute the overall cost of sampling inspection. Suggestions are made concerning the choice of parameters to minimize this cost.  相似文献

In this study, we illustrate a real‐time approximate dynamic programming (RTADP) method for solving multistage capacity decision problems in a stochastic manufacturing environment, by using an exemplary three‐stage manufacturing system with recycle. The system is a moderate size queuing network, which experiences stochastic variations in demand and product yield. The dynamic capacity decision problem is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP). The proposed RTADP method starts with a set of heuristics and learns a superior quality solution by interacting with the stochastic system via simulation. The curse‐of‐dimensionality associated with DP methods is alleviated by the adoption of several notions including “evolving set of relevant states,” for which the value function table is built and updated, “adaptive action set” for keeping track of attractive action candidates, and “nonparametric k nearest neighbor averager” for value function approximation. The performance of the learned solution is evaluated against (1) an “ideal” solution derived using a mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation, which assumes full knowledge of future realized values of the stochastic variables (2) a myopic heuristic solution, and (3) a sample path based rolling horizon MIP solution. We consider the salvo policy problem, in which there are k moments, called salvos, at which we can fire multiple missiles simultaneously at an incoming object. Each salvo is characterized by a probability pi: the hit probability of a single missile. After each salvo, we can assess whether the incoming object is still active. If it is, we fire the missiles assigned to the next salvo. In the salvo policy problem, the goal is to assign at most n missiles to salvos in order to minimize the expected number of missiles used. We consider three problem versions. In Gould's version, we have to assign all n missiles to salvos. In the Big Bomb version, a cost of B is incurred when all salvo's are unsuccessful. Finally, we consider the Quota version in which the kill probability should exceed some quota Q. We discuss the computational complexity and the approximability of these problem versions. In particular, we show that Gould's version and the Big Bomb version admit pseudopolynomial time exact algorithms and fully polynomial time approximation schemes. We also present an iterative approximation algorithm for the Quota version, and show that a related problem is NP-complete.  相似文献

This study combines inspection and lot‐sizing decisions. The issue is whether to INSPECT another unit or PRODUCE a new lot. A unit produced is either conforming or defective. Demand need to be satisfied in full, by conforming units only. The production process may switch from a “good” state to a “bad” state, at constant rate. The proportion of conforming units in the good state is higher than in the bad state. The true state is unobservable and can only be inferred from the quality of units inspected. We thus update, after each inspection, the probability that the unit, next candidate for inspection, was produced while the production process was in the good state. That “good‐state‐probability” is the basis for our decision to INSPECT or PRODUCE. We prove that the optimal policy has a simple form: INSPECT only if the good‐state‐probability exceeds a control limit. We provide a methodology to calculate the optimal lot size and the expected costs associated with INSPECT and PRODUCE. Surprisingly, we find that the control limit, as a function of the demand (and other problem parameters) is not necessarily monotone. In this paper, we consider a general covering problem in which k subsets are to be selected such that their union covers as large a weight of objects from a universal set of elements as possible. Each subset selected must satisfy some structural constraints. We analyze the quality of a k-stage covering algorithm that relies, at each stage, on greedily selecting a subset that gives maximum improvement in terms of overall coverage. We show that such greedily constructed solutions are guaranteed to be within a factor of 1 − 1/e of the optimal solution. In some cases, selecting a best solution at each stage may itself be difficult; we show that if a β-approximate best solution is chosen at each stage, then the overall solution constructed is guaranteed to be within a factor of 1 − 1/eβ of the optimal. Our results also yield a simple proof that the number of subsets used by the greedy approach to achieve entire coverage of the universal set is within a logarithmic factor of the optimal number of subsets. Examples of problems that fall into the family of general covering problems considered, and for which the algorithmic results apply, are discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This study investigates the statistical process control application for monitoring queue length data in M/G/1 systems. Specifically, we studied the average run length (ARL) characteristics of two different control charts for detecting changes in system utilization. First, the nL chart monitors the sums of successive queue length samples by subgrouping individual observations with sample size n. Next is the individual chart with a warning zone whose control scheme is specified by two pairs of parameters, (upper control limit, du) and (lower control limit, dl), as proposed by Bhat and Rao (Oper Res 20 (1972) 955–966). We will present approaches to calculate ARL for the two types of control charts using the Markov chain formulation and also investigate the effects of parameters of the control charts to provide useful design guidelines for better performance. Consider a multi-period multi-fare class airline overbooking problem that relates to a single-leg flight. Passengers may cancel their reservations at any time, including being no-shows at flight-time. Canceling passengers receive a refund that depends on their fare class, e.g., supersaver, coach, etc. At flight-time, the airline bumps passengers in excess of flight capacity and pays a penalty for so doing. A continuous state-space dynamic programming model is developed in which the state is the numbers of reservations currently on hand in each fare class. In each period, reservation requests occur in only one fare class and the fraction of reservations canceling in each class is independent of the number of reservations therein. A booking-limit policy is optimal, i.e., in each period the airline accepts reservation requests up to a booking limit if the number of initial reservations in the fare class is less than the booking limit, and declines reservation requests otherwise. The booking limits for each class depend on the numbers of reservations in the other classes. When there are two fare classes the optimal booking limits in each class decrease with the number of reservations in the other class. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The Quality Measurement Plan (QMP) and the Universal Sampling Plan (USP) are the data analysis and sampling plans for the AT&T Technologies quality audit. This article describes QMP/USP, an acceptance sampling plan based on QMP and USP principles. QMPIUSP is a complete acceptance sampling system. It combines the elements of classical rectification inspection plans with those of MIL-STD-IOSD. There is no switching between plans, no tables of numbers to look through, and no discontinue state. QMP/USP is a computerized, self-contained system that features:
  • Acceptance decisions based on the QMP Bayes empirical Bayes analysis of current and past sampling result
  • Sample size selection based on USP, i.e., lot size, AQL, a cost ratio, the QMP analysis, and a budget constraint
  • Guaranteed AOQ
  • A complete statistical analysis of the quality process.
In this article, we describe the operation of QMP/USP and compare its performance with that of MIL-STD-IOSD. The comparison is made under many different quality environments with many metrics. Our results show that QMP/USP and MIL/STD/IOSD perform similarly for the environments where quality could be described as “in control”; and that QMPlUSP is superior in the environments where quality is “out of control”.  相似文献

The MAD model presents a mathematic treatment of the relationship between aircraft reliability and maintainability, system manning and inspection policies, scheduling and sortie length, and aircraft downtime. Log normal distributions are postulated for subsystem repair times and simultaneous repair of malfunctions is assumed. The aircraft downtime for maintenance is computed with the distribution of the largest of k log normal distributions. Waiting time for maintenance men is calculated either by using a multiple-channel queuing model or by generating the distribution of the number of maintenance men required and comparing this to the number of men available to determine the probability of waiting at each inspection.  相似文献

Explicit formulas for the transition probabilities are given and the limiting Markov process for t0 → ∞ is investigated. Several properties of this process are considered. Consider a set of vertices V = {1, 2,…, n} placed on a two-dimensional Euclidean plane R2 with each vertex attached a nonnegative weight w: VR. For a given constant d>0, the geometric graph G = (V, E) is defined to have edge set E = {(i, j): dijd} with dij being the Euclidean distance between vertices i and j. The geometric vertex packing (GVP) problem, which is often called the independent set problem, is defined as selecting the set of pairwise nonadjacent vertices with maximum total weight. We limit our attention to the special case that no vertex is within a distance βd of any other vertices where 0 ⩽ β < 1. A special value of β (= 1/2) is referred to frequently because of its correspondence to a manufacturing problem in circuit board testing. In this article we show that the weighted vertex packing problem for the specially structured geometric graph (SGVP) defined with the above restriction is NP-complete even for the case that all vertex weights are unity and for any β. Polynomial procedures have been designed for generating cuts to obtain tight LP upper bounds for the SGVP. Two heuristics with bounded worst-case performance are applied to the LP solution to produce a feasible solution and a lower bound. We then use a branch-and-bound procedure to solve the problem to optimality. Computational results on large-scale SGVP problems will be discussed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper the effects of inspector error on a cost-based quality control system are investigated. The system examined is of a single sampling plan design involving several cost components. Both type I and type II inspector errors are considered. The model employs a process distribution, thus assuming that a stochastic process of some kind governs the quality of incoming lots. Optimal plan design is investigated under both error-free and error-prone inspection procedures and some comparisons are made.  相似文献

It is assumed that λ (t) is first increasing then decreasing inside the interval (0, T) with peak at t = t0, say. Three methods are given for estimating to. One of these methods is nonparametric, and the other two methods are based on the standard regression technique and the maximum likelihood principle The given resull has application in a problem of determining the azimuth of a target from the radar-impulse data. The time series of incoming signals may be approximated by the occurrence of a nonhomogeneous Poisson process with mean value function λ (t). The azimuth of the target is reasonably determined from the direction of the axis of the radar beam at the instant to, corresponding to the peak value of λ (t).  相似文献

We consider scheduling problems involving two agents (agents A and B), each having a set of jobs that compete for the use of a common machine to process their respective jobs. The due dates of the A‐jobs are decision variables, which are determined by using the common (CON) or slack (SLK) due date assignment methods. Each agent wants to minimize a certain performance criterion depending on the completion times of its jobs only. Under each due date assignment method, the criterion of agent A is always the same, namely an integrated criterion consisting of the due date assignment cost and the weighted number of tardy jobs. Several different criteria are considered for agent B, including the maxima of regular functions (associated with each job), the total (weighted) completion time, and the weighted number of tardy jobs. The overall objective is to minimize the performance criterion of agent A, while keeping the objective value of agent B no greater than a given limit. We analyze the computational complexity, and devise polynomial or pseudo‐polynomial dynamic programming algorithms for the considered problems. We also convert, if viable, any of the devised pseudopolynomial dynamic programming algorithms into a fully polynomial‐time approximation scheme. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A statistic is determined for testing the hypothesis of equality for scale parameters from two populations, each of which has the first asymptotic distribution of smallest (extreme) values. The probability distribution is derived for this statistic, and critical values are determined and given in tabular form for a one-sided or two-sided alternative, for censored samples of size n1 and n2, n1 = 2, 3, …. 6, n2 = 2, 3, …. 6.
