It is often assumed in the facility location literature that functions of the type øi(xi, y) = βi[(xi-x)2+(yi-y)2]K/2 are twice differentiable. Here we point out that this is true only for certain values of K. Convexity proofs that are independent of the value of K are given.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling a set of n jobs on a single batch machine, where several jobs can be processed simultaneously. Each job j has a processing time pj and a size sj. All jobs are available for processing at time 0. The batch machine has a capacity D. Several jobs can be batched together and processed simultaneously, provided that the total size of the jobs in the batch does not exceed D. The processing time of a batch is the largest processing time among all jobs in the batch. There is a single vehicle available for delivery of the finished products to the customer, and the vehicle has capacity K. We assume that K = rD, where and r is an integer. The travel time of the vehicle is T; that is, T is the time from the manufacturer to the customer. Our goal is to find a schedule of the jobs and a delivery plan so that the service span is minimized, where the service span is the time that the last job is delivered to the customer. We show that if the jobs have identical sizes, then we can find a schedule and delivery plan in time such that the service span is minimum. If the jobs have identical processing times, then we can find a schedule and delivery plan in time such that the service span is asymptotically at most 11/9 times the optimal service span. When the jobs have arbitrary processing times and arbitrary sizes, then we can find a schedule and delivery plan in time such that the service span is asymptotically at most twice the optimal service span. We also derive upper bounds of the absolute worst‐case ratios in both cases. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 62: 470–482, 2015  相似文献

A system reliability is often evaluated by individual tests of components that constitute the system. These component test plans have advantages over complete system based tests in terms of time and cost. In this paper, we consider the series system with n components, where the lifetime of the i‐th component follows exponential distribution with parameter λi. Assuming test costs for the components are different, we develop an efficient algorithm to design a two‐stage component test plan that satisfies the usual probability requirements on the system reliability and in addition minimizes the maximum expected cost. For the case of prior information in the form of upper bounds on λi's, we use the genetic algorithm to solve the associated optimization problems which are otherwise difficult to solve using mathematical programming techniques. The two‐stage component test plans are cost effective compared to single‐stage plans developed by Rajgopal and Mazumdar. We demonstrate through several numerical examples that our approach has the potential to reduce the overall testing costs significantly. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This paper deals with flowshop/sum of completion times scheduling problems, working under a “no-idle” or a “no-wait” constraint, the former prescribes for the machines to work continuously without idle intervals and the latter for the jobs to be processed continuously without waiting times between consecutive machines. Under either of the constraints the problem is unary NP-Complete for two machines. We prove some properties of the optimal schedule for n/2/F, no-idle/σCi. For n/m/P, no-idle/σCi, and n/m/P, no-wait/σCi, with an increasing or decreasing series of dominating machines, we prove theorems that are the basis for polynomial bounded algorithms. All theorems are demonstrated numerically.  相似文献

We consider the scheduling of n jobs on m identical machines when the jobs become available for processing at ready times ai, ai, ? 0, require di time units for processing and must be completed by times bi for i = 1, 2, … n. The objective chosen is that of minimizing the total elapsed time to complete all jobs subject to the ready time and due date constraints, preemption is not allowed. We present a multi-stage solution algorithm for this problem that is based on an implicit enumeration procedure and also uses the labelling type algorithm which solves the problem when preemption is allowed.  相似文献

A classic problem in Search Theory is one in which a searcher allocates resources to the points of the integer interval [1, n] in an attempt to find an object which has been hidden in them using a known probability function. In this paper we consider a modification of this problem in which there is a protector who can also allocate resources to the points; allocating these resources makes it more difficult for the searcher to find an object. We model the situation as a two‐person non‐zero‐sum game so that we can take into account the fact that using resources can be costly. It is shown that this game has a unique Nash equilibrium when the searcher's probability of finding an object located at point i is of the form (1 − exp (−λixi)) exp (−μiyi) when the searcher and protector allocate resources xi and yi respectively to point i. An algorithm to find this Nash equilibrium is given. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 47:85–96, 2000  相似文献

We study a class of new scheduling problems which involve types of teamwork tasks. Each teamwork task consists of several components, and requires a team of processors to complete, with each team member to process a particular component of the task. Once the processor completes its work on the task, it will be available immediately to work on the next task regardless of whether the other components of the last task have been completed or not. Thus, the processors in a team neither have to start, nor have to finish, at the same time as they process a task. A task is completed only when all of its components have been processed. The problem is to find an optimal schedule to process all tasks, under a given objective measure. We consider both deterministic and stochastic models. For the deterministic model, we find that the optimal schedule exhibits the pattern that all processors must adopt the same sequence to process the tasks, even under a general objective function GC = F(f1(C1), f2(C2), … , fn(Cn)), where fi(Ci) is a general, nondecreasing function of the completion time Ci of task i. We show that the optimal sequence to minimize the maximum cost MC = max fi(Ci) can be derived by a simple rule if there exists an order f1(t) ≤ … ≤ fn(t) for all t between the functions {fi(t)}. We further show that the optimal sequence to minimize the total cost TC = ∑ fi(Ci) can be constructed by a dynamic programming algorithm. For the stochastic model, we study three optimization criteria: (A) almost sure minimization; (B) stochastic ordering; and (C) expected cost minimization. For criterion (A), we show that the results for the corresponding deterministic model can be easily generalized. However, stochastic problems with criteria (B) and (C) become quite difficult. Conditions under which the optimal solutions can be found for these two criteria are derived. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2004  相似文献

The first problem considered in this paper is concerned with the assembly of independent components into parallel systems so as to maximize the expected number of systems that perform satisfactorily. Associated with each component is a probability of it performing successfully. It is shown that an optimal assembly is obtained if the reliability of each assembled system can be made equal. If such equality is not attainable, then bounds are given so that the maximum expected number of systems that perform satisfactorily will lie within these stated bounds; the bounds being a function of an arbitrarily chosen assembly. An improvement algorithm is also presented. A second problem treated is concerned with the optimal design of a system. Instead of assembling given units, there is an opportunity to “control” their quality, i.e., the manufacturer is able to fix the probability, p, of a unit performing successfully. However, his resources, are limited so that a constraint is imposed on these probabilities. For (1) series systems, (2) parallel systems, and (3) k out of n systems, results are obtained for finding the optimal p's which maximize the reliability of a single system, and which maximize the expected number of systems that perform satisfactorily out of a total assembly of J systems.  相似文献

In this paper we consider n jobs and a number of machines in parallel. The machines are identical and subject to breakdown and repair. The number may therefore vary over time and is at time t equal to m(t). Preemptions are allowed. We consider three objectives, namely, the total completion time, ∑ Cj, the makespan Cmax, and the maximum lateness Lmax. We study the conditions on m(t) under which various rules minimize the objective functions under consideration. We analyze cases when the jobs have deadlines to meet and when the jobs are subject to precedence constraints. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics, 2004.  相似文献

This article describes a new procedure for estimating parameters of a stochastic activity network of N arcs. The parameters include the probability that path m is the longest path, the probability that path m is the shortest path, the probability that arc i is on the longest path, and the probability that arc i is on the shortest path. The proposed procedure uses quasirandom points together with information on a cutset ? of the network to produce an upper bound of O[(log K)N?|?|+1/K] on the absolute error of approximation, where K denotes the number of replications. This is a deterministic bound and is more favorable than the convergence rate of 1/K1/2 that one obtains from the standard error for K independent replications using random sampling. It is also shown how series reduction can improve the convergence rate by reducing the exponent on log K. The technique is illustrated using a Monte Carlo sampling experiment for a network of 16 relevant arcs with a cutset of ? = 7 arcs. The illustration shows the superior performance of using quasirandom points with a cutset (plan A) and the even better performance of using quasirandom points with the cutset together with series reduction (plan B) with regard to mean square error. However, it also shows that computation time considerations favor plan A when K is small and plan B when K is large.  相似文献

The paper discusses mathematical properties of the well-known Bellman-Johnson 3 × n sequencing problem. Optimal rules for some special cases are developed. For the case min Bi ≥ maxAj we find an optimal sequence of the 2 × n problem for machines B and C and move one item to the front of the sequence to minimize (7); when min Bi ≥ max Cj we solve a 2 × n problem for machines A and B and move one item to the end of the optimal sequence so as to minimize (9). There is also given a sufficient optimality condition for a solution obtained by Johnson's approximate method. This explains why this method so often produces an optimal solution.  相似文献

Let (Y, Xl,…, XK) be a random vector distributed according to a multivariate normal distribution where Xl,…, XK are considered as predictor variables and y is the predictand. Let ri, and Ri denote the population and sample correlation coefficients, respectively, between Y and Xi. The population correlation coefficient ri is a measure of the predictive power of Xi. The author has derived the joint distribution of Rl,…, RK and its asymptotic property. The given result is useful in the problem of selecting the most important predictor variable corresponding to the largest absolute value of ri.  相似文献

To location Li we are to allocate a “generator” and ni “machines” for i = 1, …,k, where n1n1 ≧ … ≧ nk. Although the generators and machines function independently of one another, a machine is operable only if it and the generator at its location are functioning. The problem we consider is that of finding the arrangement or allocation optimizing the number of operable machines. We show that if the objective is to maximize the expected number of operable machines at some future time, then it is best to allocate the best generator and the n1 best machines to location L1, the second-best generator and the n2-next-best machines to location L2, etc. However, this arrangement is not always stochastically optimal. For the case of two generators we give a necessary and sufficient condition that this arrangement is stochastically best, and illustrate the result with several examples.  相似文献

We consider the scheduling of n tasks on a single resource. Each task becomes available for processing at time ai, must be completed by time bi, and requires di time units for processing. The aim is to find a schedule that minimizes the elapsed time to complete all jobs. We present solution algorithms for this problem when job splitting is permitted and when job splitting is not permitted. Then we consider several scheduling situations which arise in practice where these models may apply.  相似文献

The effectiveness of Johnson's Approximate Method (JAM) for the 3 × n job shop scheduling problems was examined on 1,500 test cases with n ranging from 6 to 50 and with the processing times Ai, Bi, Ci (for item i on machines A, B, C) being uniformly and normally distributed. JAM proved to be quite effective for the case Bi ? max (Ai, Ci) and optimal for Bi, ? min (Ai, Ci).  相似文献

Consider a two machine flow shop and n jobs. The processing time of job j on machine i is equal to the random variable Xij One of the two machines is subject to breakdown and repair. The objective is to find the schedule that minimizes the expected makespan. Two results are shown. First, ifP(X2j ≧ X1j) = 1 for all j and the random variables X11, X12,…, X1n are likelihood ratio ordered, then the SEPT sequence minimizes the expected makespan when machine 2 is subject to an arbitrary breakdown process; if P(X1j≧X2j) = 1 and X21, X22,….,X2n are likelihood ratio ordered, then the LEPT sequence minimizes the expected makespan when machine 1 is subject to an arbitrary breakdown process. A generalization is presented for flow shops with m machines. Second, consider the case where X1j and X2j are i.i.d. exponentially distributed with rate λj. The SEPT sequence minimizes the expected makespan when machine 2 is subject to an arbitrary breakdown process and the LEPT sequence is optimal when machine 1 is subject to an arbitrary breakdown process. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This paper tackles the general single machine scheduling problem, where jobs have different release and due dates and the objective is to minimize the weighted number of late jobs. The notion of master sequence is first introduced, i.e., a sequence that contains at least an optimal sequence of jobs on time. This master sequence is used to derive an original mixed‐integer linear programming formulation. By relaxing some constraints, a Lagrangean relaxation algorithm is designed which gives both lower and upper bounds. The special case where jobs have equal weights is analyzed. Computational results are presented and, although the duality gap becomes larger with the number of jobs, it is possible to solve problems of more than 100 jobs. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider a general repair process where the virtual age Vi after the ith repair is given by Vi = ϕ(Vi−1 + Xi), ϕ(·) is a specified repair functional, and Xi is the time between the (i − 1)th and ith repair. Some monotonicity and dominance properties are derived, and an equilibrium process is considered. A computational method for evaluating the expected number/density of repairs is described together with an approximation method for obtaining some parameters of the equilibrium process. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We consider a class of production scheduling models with m identical machines in parallel and k different product types. It takes a time pi to produce one unit of product type i on any one of the machines. There is a demand stream for product type i consisting of ni units with each unit having a given due date. Before a machine starts with the production of a batch of products of type i a setup cost c is incurred. We consider several different objective functions. Each one of the objective functions has three components, namely a total setup cost, a total earliness cost, and a total tardiness cost. In our class of problems we find a relatively large number of problems that can be solved either in polynomial time or in pseudo‐polynomial time. The polynomiality or pseudo‐polynomiality is achieved under certain special conditions that may be of practical interest; for example, a regularity pattern in the string of due dates combined with earliness and tardiness costs that are similar for different types of products. The class of models we consider includes as special cases discrete counterparts of a number of inventory models that have been considered in the literature before, e.g., Wagner and Whitin (Manage Sci 5 (1958), 89–96) and Zangwill (Oper Res 14 (1966), 486–507; Manage Sci 15 (1969), 506–527). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider the problem of scheduling N jobs on M parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum earliness or tardiness cost incurred for each of the jobs. Earliness and tardiness costs are given by general (but job-independent) functions of the amount of time a job is completed prior to or after a common due date. We show that in problems with a nonrestrictive due date, the problem decomposes into two parts. Each of the M longest jobs is assigned to a different machine, and all other jobs are assigned to the machines so as to minimize their makespan. With these assignments, the individual scheduling problems for each of the machines are simple to solve. We demonstrate that several simple heuristics of low complexity, based on this characterization, are asymptotically optimal under mild probabilistic conditions. We develop attractive worst-case bounds for them. We also develop a simple closed-form lower bound for the minimum cost value. The bound is asymptotically accurate under the same probabilistic conditions. In the case where the due date is restrictive, the problem is more complex only in the sense that the set of initial jobs on the machines is not easily characterized. However, we extend our heuristics and lower bounds to this general case as well. Numerical studies exhibit that these heuristics perform excellently even for small- or moderate-size problems both in the restrictive and nonrestrictive due-date case. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
